Title: Susan McGinlay Mollinson, Everton, Liverpool
Post by: Grandma5 on Sunday 11 March 07 22:01 GMT (UK)
Looking for information on Susan McGinlay Mollinson of 21 Amos St., Everton, Liverpool.  She was the mother of 4 British Home Children (including my grandmother) who were sent to Canada.  Three children were placed in Quarrier's care in 1881, arriving in Canada 1884.

A fourth child, Mary, stayed with the grandmother in Glascow until 1886, when she too was placed in care. Quarriers record indicates the mother married a "Mollison" with above address, and he would not accept the daughter.

Seek information re great grandmother, Susan McGinlay who married Mr.? Mollison, and I understand had other children.   Much thanks.    Millie

Yes, and thank you for that reminder!  Susan was born Jan 27, 1856 at Clyde, Glascow, Lanark, Scotland to Francis McGinlay and Ann Galbraith McGinlay.

This is odd, I cant pick up Susan in  1861 either England or Scotland, neither can I find the parents, are you sure it is the correct spelling?

Have I go this right, Susan had 4 illegitimate children 3 whom were sent to Canada and 1 that stayed with her until she married. ??? ??? ???

Hi...Yes, Susan's information seems OK....from IGI, also appears in Scotland's 1861 Census as one of Francis McGinlay's 5 children.  I have a birth registration for son, but not the girls.

Susan gave birth to daughters Ann (1876), Susan (my grandmother) in 1878 and Robert (1880).  These three were placed in Quarrier's care (girls in 1880 and Robert in 1881).  All went to Canada in 1884. I have been able to trace the girls who were placed in Ontario, not Robert who went to Quebec.  Quarrier's records indicate the father, Robert Cook, would not marry.....all the children carried the Cook name.  The birth registration I have for Robert says "illigitimate" and lists McGinlay as his surname.

Mary,  born 1881, apparently remained with Susan's mother who was widowed when Susan married Mollison.  Funds were sent intermittently to help with Mary's support.  In 1886 they ceased. Ann McGinlay (grandma) ....according to Quarrier's records, was not well, nearly deaf and could not support nor care for Mary.  Susan's husband would not accept her, so it was decided to send her to Canada to join her siblings.  She migrated in 1891 to Quebec.  I did not know of Mary until this past fall when I found and visited Ann's granddaughter in Ontario.  She spoke of her grandma's sister, who I thought was my grandmother, Susan.  However, she was speaking of Mary and very recently mailed me a picture of Mary's grandson and great granddaughter.  I have been in contact with Quarriers, the information mention was from the original "intake" records.

I never knew my grandmother, who migrated from Canada to the states with my grandfather.  Finding she was a BHC was quite a surprise and finding the other children a greater one. Been searching for her family....my great grand parents, and for Robert Cook (but that seems like a dead end)  Whatever help you might offer is greatly appreciated!    Millie

Thanks for that information.  I wonder if this is "my" Susan" in 1881, unless Fanny was not her daughter, but Mollison's.

In 1881 my Susan gave birth to Mary, placed Robert in Quarrier's care.  In could be that Robert was placed, Mary left with her grandmother and Susan joined Mollison.  Do you know the date of the census?

Do they appear in the 1891?  Deep appreciation for your help!   Millie
