Thanks for the lookups - I'll have to file those away somewhere as I haven't tried looking forward yet from my dad b 1921. I'm having trouble sorting out the different families  pre 1901 as it is!  ::)

I keep saying maybe I'll do a one name study when I retire!!!

Thanks again

Sorry no luck in  Jarrow so I had a look in Harton South Sheilds which is just up the road from Jarrow

there was a Henry Larkin deid 21 july 1978 age 73. mary larkin died 6 april 1993 age 88  they share the grave and headstone with some Millers.

They could be in Hebburn cemetery which is the village next to Jarrow   but sorry to say I  haven't got the inscriptions  for Hebburn

Checked for Bullerwell in Harton and Jarrow  no names were  mention. Jarrow and Harton are both Council run cemetery's   it not to say that  the names you are looking are not in Jarrow or Harton South Shields.  they could be buried in  a church cemetery  also  they still maybe  there but  without a headstone.

Sorry i could not help  :'(

Hello again Cherryberry,

You are very kind!  The A. Mayne is interesting as I have 3 A. Maynes, but all survived WWI (too young/too old to serve).  I thought I had a pretty good handle on my Mayne families & 'the others' in the South Shields/Jarrow area but cannot immediately place the one you have found - will have to hunt him out!

The Laidlers & Fitzpatrick entry are not mine, but I am often contacted by other branches so these entries will still come in handy - much appreciate your time and thoughfulness!  :)

Hello again Cherryberry

May I have another lookup please for references to the name DAGLISH? Particularly any Richard's?

I am also looking for George OLIVER please between 1851 and 1861. He would be in his fifties - although as he was a mariner and not at home on previous census nights we do not know exactly when he was born - this is one of our brickwalls!

As you say, it is possible they are there but do not have headstones but worth a try!

Thanks again and God bless you,
Lynne (NZ)

Thank you,

Thanks for the quick reply Cherryb

I am going to be busy slotting these in to my tree! The earlier Harcus is most interesting and Robert is a name that appears in my tree so I am sure they must be connected.

Do you know if Roman Catholic burials would be at the Harton Cemetery - perhaps in a separate section? The other name from Westoe I am seeking is Miller. Common name, I know, but I am hoping the Catholic element might winkle them out?

thanks again for your help

Would you please be so kind as to check if you have any MI's for the surname Spooner?

If you do find some, please do not transcribe for me. I will give you some names and approximate dates to check if they are my lot. It might save you some work  ;)

Many thanks.

Cherryberry, Thanks so much for your time in looking, however my orginal interest was peaked by the above quote which mentions Millers ? Does that mean there is something ?

there are quite a few family named on the headstone Johnsons Millers and Larkins

In Loving memory Of Margaret  Jane Johnson died 11 Sept 1945 George Miller died 30 December 1972 Henry Larkin died 21 July 1978. Agnes Mary Larkin 1993.In loving memory of Annie beloved wife of George Miller a mother second to none of George Victor and Pat

there are other Miller names which I will send you as pm so not to clog up the  boards lol

have checked  all the  MI's for Jarrow and South Sheilds  that I have
no O'Sullivan or Sullivan

but i was lucky and  come across a few in in South Sheilds in Harton Cemetery

will send details in PM

But just to say that  because there is no mention of them on my MI's does not mean that they are not buried in Jarrow or South Shields only that the headstone not was around for the the inscription's to be copied or that they may not have had one.

Hi there,

I wonder if I could trouble you for a look up?

I'm looking for a large family with quite a common name.  The family lived in South Shields but I believe the head of the family moved back to Suffolk, his place of birth, after the death of his wife Elizabeth (m.s. Harrison).  I don't know if his body was brought back to South Shields or what.

from 1901 census:
WARD William, Head, b 1854, Patentee & Manager paint works
WARD, Elizabeth, Wife, b abt 1865 (known as LUCY)
WARD, Samuel, Son, S, abt 1885 Apprentice Marine Engineer, South Shields
WARD, Herbert, Son, 1890 killed in Action WWI
WARD Wm Septimus, Son, b1895
WARD Ralph killed in Action WWI
---

William & Elizabeth were living with the Harrison parents in 1881 in Westoe but now that I'm writing this I've realised I haven't pursued them in later census - on the off chance that they moved with their daughter Elizabeth I'm wondering if you can find them too.

Also HARRISON John (b abt 1835) and wife Elizabeth (b abt 1845).

I noticed you've got some apprenticeship records.  I think all the Ward sons were marine engineers and I'm wondering if they had a recognised apprenticeship.

Much obliged,
Rena

The time period 1308-1929 seems enormous. Do I have to be more specific?

Hi Cherryberry,

I would really appreciate your help. I am trying to trace my grandmother's family and learn more about her. I know she is buried in Jarrow cemetery as I recall going to see her grave many years ago with my father and uncle.
Her name was Kathleen Oates, born in Horsley, Hexham, 1898. She had been married before and her name was Doran. Her maiden name was Featherstonhaugh.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Hi

Does it mention any Reed's ?

I found my ancestor John Reed bn abt 1798 in Ellington with his wife Jane & children Joseph, John, William, Isabella, George and Thomas in the 1841 census.  He was a schoolmaster and they lived in Alnwick.

By the 1851 census they had moved to Westoe, Durham.  John was a widow and he only had Isabella, George and Thomas living with him.

By the 1861 census I can only locate Isabella who married William Crozier and were still living in Westoe.  I also found one other son William married to Susannah Downey.

Have spent many hours trying to find my missing ancestors with no luck !

Regards,

Julie.

Is there an inscription for Christopher Taylor, father of Mary Taylor, who was born abt. 1828. so thinking he may have been born about 1800, but not sure of his death date.  Mary Taylor married Robert Meggison and died in 1879 but not sure where she is buried.

Might you by any chance have a James Handwood Diaper b.1831 d. 1874 on your list , also his baby son Alfred Kingston Diaper? They lived in the Westhoe district so I'm not sure whether they would have been buried in Jarrow?
Thankyou very much.

Hello Tracy
My Douglass  at first came from Newcastle then moved to  Hebburn which was The village next door to Jarrow   Edward Douglass married Georgina Rutherford  which is the main family I am researching.

They too worked at the shipyards  but most of the men form Jarrow and Hebburn either work in the Palmer's or Swan Hunters ship yards  or in
Hebburn mine

If our Douglass match up i will  be happy to  send you what i have, or if you need more info on my lot please just ask i haven't got much mind  as it not a family i have done much research on yet

Hello Cath
Sorry to have taken so long in answering your query.  I have been sorting out all my family tree files etc and the room which took me longer than I thought . :-[

I think I am back on track, have looked though my Jarrow  Cemetery monumentals,  but can find no Kenney/Kenny  I have also looked around my other Jarrow burials but can find only one  James Kenney but he was the wrong age  12  and was buried at St  Paul's Jarrow.

I have looked at the Harton Cemetery  monumental also, sorry to say no one of that name there either.

Many thanks, lindyloobags

My ancestor Jane Davison was born in Hebburn, and she married Robert Meggison in Sedgefield, Durham, and then they both died in Durham.  their granddaughter Jane Meggison born in Aycliffe, Durham married George Douglass in Gosforth, Northumberland in 1833.  that is the only Douglas that I have in my tree, aside from their children, all born in Northumberland (either Coxlodge or Corbridge). I don't know the relationship or exact location of these places.  The oldest Douglas daughter died in Newcastle-upon-Tyne.  I know that we are now out of Durham but the connection is there.  Tracy, do you have a George
Douglass in your tree?

Could you tell me if you have any Thursfields?

I know they were living in the Heworth and Jarrow areas for quite a while.

All periods are welcome!

I'd also be interested in an Eleanor Bates who was buried 6 Dec 1817 at Jarrow.

Many thanks

My question is, could you search  for a Todd in Jarrow cemetery?  Curious to find a Jane and Ralph around 1911?  Or a Margaret Todd in 1870?

Hi Cherryberry,

I realize you just did a look up for me, and I really hate to ask this but.....can you do a search for Patterson?

Got to thinking that perhaps our Jane is there?

The names would be John, Jane, Jacob, William, and Catherine...1880 - 1920?

Finding these people will certainly help me, and I can spend more time at the archives furthering the search when I am in Jarrow.

You are so GOOD!!

I think there is 2 there that are of relation and possibly solved a wee mystery as well.

I am not from around Jarrow at all, infact, I am originally from Canada.  I have been living in Scotland for about 3 years now and this will be my first adventure to Jarrow.
I have booked time at TWAS (going to try cemetery searches) then thought I would pop on over to the library  and search some records.
My main purpose was to find my great grandmother Jane Todd (nee patterson) who died in 1911 and a month before that...her son Ralph (age 19).  It was shortly after that when my grandmother (Jane's daughter) emigrated to Canada (she was 10).  She never talked about her life in the U.K., never had pictures, no nothing.  It is a mystery waiting to be discovered.

Sorry to waffle on about this.   :-[   I am very appreciative for this information and I just may take you up on some other information down the line.

Thanks again for the tips, fingers crossed I find these places.

Thanks for looking Cherryberry -- I will see if there is an obit somewhere as I don't think that any others of my Weir family were in Durham -- James had married his first wife there but had then moved to Cubbitt Town on the Isle of Dogs and had only returned to the area after marrying his 2nd wife, sometime after 1906. My lot cerrtainly got about!
Thanks again.

Hello Cherryberry,

I wonder if I could trouble you to see if there are any Hadlow's - any at all - on any of the MI's? I am just starting on this particular branch and know very, very little of them so any information at all would be most welcome, if indeed there is any!

Thanks,

Ceitidh.
