does anybody know where i could get inscriptions for the burial grouns in durness?
-
Hello Poppysmum
I can get the inscriptions for Durness Burial Grounds, if you wish. Also if you join the countysutherland.co.uk group and pay £5 you become a lifetime member and get access to all the Burial Grounds in Sutherland. Has really been very helpful for me.

Hectors wife Mary McIntosh died 4th January 1853 aged 39 years and is buried with her son Donald who died 22 Nov 1903 aged 61 years. Hello Caroline
I never had the deaths for Georgina or Christina. I also don't know anything about John b 1844 and baptised 27 May 1844.
I have 2 brothers both named George (one baptised 5 Jan 1802 and George Mackay WHYTE baptised 23 Jan 1799. In the 1861 Scottish Census it shows a George (aged 60) living with his brother Hector at Durine No 23, Durness. No occupation given. In the 1851 Census George is also living with his brother and gives occupation as Pauper.
I am very interested in the cd rom you have.

Caroline- can you look for a male Sutherland and female McKay possibly Angus and Barbara who were born about 1870's or 80's and died after 1812 and before 1830. They are husband and wife so are hopefully together. Let me know if this is too vague.
Thanks Emily

Sorry!

Hello Emily
I have found an Angus Sutherland who died 7 Nov 1827 aged 45 years. His spouse Barbara Sutherland died 20 April 1872 (cannot read the age.) Also on the headstone is Grandson Kenneth F Sutherland who died 1862 aged 10 years and their great Grandson Andrew Mackay died 1900 aged 7 months. Stone erected by their son Robert. Hope this helps.
Kind regards
Carol

Hi Carol,
I have just found out about the shipwreck of the barque Canton off Cape Wrath 22 Aug 1847 when all hands were lost and the bodies recovered were buried at Durness according to newspaper reports.
Is it possible to find any monumental inscription details of Asher PREDGEN b.1808 Hull who was 1st officer on the barque?
Thank you for looking,
Barbara

Hi Carol,
Maybe when they buried them they didn't yet know their names, and perhaps there is no MI for the crew and passengers of the ship.
The newspaper report said:
" As decently as possible the bodies were collected and conveyed to Durness, and on the following day they were interred in the parish churchyard"
Thanks so much for looking.
Barbara

Yes, you could be right Barbara. I haven't had any luck finding them so far.

Hi Carol,
Thanks very much for taking the time to look for me

Hello Barbara
It doesn't look like there is any monumental inscription to mark the passengers of the Canton. I did find it mentioned on the Durness website. Go to:
http://www.durness.org/Balnakeil%20Church.htm
Sorry I couldn't be more help than that.

Hi Carol,
Thank you, that's a good site. It says that there is nothing to mark the mass grave, but strangely says it was an emigrant ship and the wreck happened in 1849, whereas I got my information from a newspaper dated 1847, that ship was a hull barque, am now wondering if there were two wrecks with a ship of the same name. More to investigate here I think!
Thanks again,
Barbara
:)

Hello Barbara, Yes it does seem conflicting doesn't it. There is another site you might like to look at which also mentions the CANTON but still 1849.

Keep looking girl.

Hi again Barbara, It definately was 1847 so hope that has helped a bit. Have just found very brief details in a Scottish Newspaper:-
"The barque "Canton" of Hull. Capt J. Tonge- Master. No survivors."
so I have written to the website to see if they will give me more information about it. I have also enquired about Asher.
Best wishes
Carol ;D

Hi Carol,
Just an update. Have been in contact with
1. a local artist who had done a project on the shipwreck
2. the Durness primary school headmaster who has been researching it
3. Hull maritime museum curator who found details of the ship
I now have lots of information, it was 1847, normally used to carry emigrants to Canada but not on this occasion, hence the reason they thought 300 people had been lost, but it was just the 18 crew & 2 passengers lost, buried in Balnakeig churchyard near Durness, but nothing to mark their graves, unfortunately. Not much documentation locally, just stories passed down, maybe sometime there will be something to mark their sad end.
Thanks for your help
Barbara :)

Hello Barbara, So pleased to hear you managed to get a bit more information on this. I haven't had any luck with my research, still waiting for replies? I did find a Census for Asher Predgen in 1861 aged 8 yrs and also in 1871 aged 18 years and was on a ship called "Flying Cloud" and he was a fisherman. Got to be a relation. Do you have these Census that I am talking about? If not I can send them on to you if you let me have your email address. Send me a Personal Message. I am going away tomorrow for 10 days, so no computer for that time. :(
Take care
Carol

Hi Carol,
Yes thanks, I have all census information for him, Asia Predgen b.1853 was my gt.grandfather.
Asher on the shipwreck was his uncle, and until now I didn't know much about him. The name came down through the family as Asia. Hoping to visit Durness later this year to see where it all happened. Someone there is going to try to find out more from burial records, as it's before the date that scotlandspeople have online, so here's hoping.
Many thanks for taking the time with this, and enjoy your holiday
Kind regards, Barbara :)
-
Thanks very much Barbara. Am sure we will enjoy our time away.
If I hear anything else on the shipwreck that I think will benefit you, will write and let you know. I think you may have found all we are going to find out.
Good luck and best wishes,
Carol ;)

Did you know that there is now a free index to burials in Sutherland online by following the links at http://www.countysutherland.co.uk/11.html
Payment of a very reasonable one off fee allows access to actual gravestone photographs!..Revamped payment options.

Hi Carol - you seem to be a fount of information! Any chance you could check your Durness burials for me?
I'm looking for George Mackay (Bain) and his wife Catherine Mackay (Gow) - they were married at Westmoine Mission (Durness) in 1782, and went on having children at least until 1795, but I've no idea how long they livedafter that. They lived at Ach a Ghearraiseich, on the east side of Loch Eriboll, sometimes spelt Achucharasait, or other variations...
Children were (at least) Hugh, Margaret, John and James.
Thanks!

Hello Jo, Sorry to say I have had no luck in finding any of your family. Are you a member of county-Sutherland? I highly recommend you join, if you are not, as everyone on the site is very helpful and friendly, and am sure you will get help from it.
Good luck
Regards
Carol

Jo:
If you "Google" for Achucharasait, you will get 2 or 3 hits, including one for jandj roots/ Mackay, an Ancestry.com site that is a huge data base for Mackays and others. It contains a pedigree for George Bain Mackay. However, a word of caution; I have seen several errors when families are connected to the Chiefly line, as they have done with George Bain Mackay.
In one of the entries in the Parish Register, the minister notes that George drowned while serving with the army in Ireland.

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply.
Carol - I had a look on the county-Sutherland site, and it does look good. Haven't joined yet, but perhaps I will... This search isn't for my own forbears (who aren't from Sutherland), so not enough reason to join yet, but it does look like a really useful site. I tried looking at the MIs, but couldn't find one either - I just wasn't sure if you had access to more than what was on the website. thanks for checking!
Ian - I had seen that note about drowning in Ireland as well, but couldn't decide if it meant George had drowned, or his father. It's a bit ambiguous - I'll have a look at the Fencibles record, and see if I can find when they served in Ireland - might help identify which one it was. The pedigree on Ancestry is really interesting, although there don't seem to be any sources, so you're right about exercising caution. Still, it makes intriguing reading.
Thanks again for helping - this is the first time I've posted on here, so it's quite exciting to find people really answering!
Jo
