Hi Sueh
Following their marriage in 1840: DAVID HORNE and JANET FALCONER Marriage: 08 SEP 1840 Thurso, Caithness, Scotland, these are the children showing to them born in Scotland:
1. HELEN GLASS HORNE Christening: 05 JUL 1841 Thurso, Caithness, Scotland
3. ALEXANDER HORN Christening: 07 JAN 1843 Thurso, Caithness, Scotland
2. JOHN HORNE Christening: 11 AUG 1844 Thurso, Caithness, Scotland
From these names, there is a possible marriage that could relate to David's parents on IGI, an actual extract from the OPRs:
HELEN GLASS Marriages: Spouse: JOHN HORN
Marriage: 20 MAY 1811 Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland
The following children show on IGI to a John Horn and Helen Glass:
1. DAVID HORN Birth: 02 OCT 1812 Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland
1. ANN HORN Birth: 17 APR 1814 Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland
I've been totally unsuccessful at finding David and Janet in the 1841 census so far. By all accounts, at least Janet (if David was off to sea) you would think would be in Caithness given that's where they were having children up to 1844.
Regards.

You obviously had better luck with FamilySearch tonight, Monica. ;D
If you're looking on the census, have you tried the surname Home? I've had trouble with that before (the other way about though Home -> Horne).
EDIT:
Think I've found them in 1841, using FreeCen.
Address: Scrabster, Thurso, Caithness
David Horne, m, 25, Navy, (outside county)
Jannet, f, 22, -, (outside county)
Sinclair McBeath, m, 40, Navy, Caithness
Andrew Mowat, m, 25, Navy, Caithness

Family Search is driving me mad at the moment, their server seems to be on super slow mode this last week - frustrating >:(
I just tried Home, nothing there either. I'm searching the Scottish indexes on Ancestry, haven't tried Scotlands People.
Assuming that Janet Falconer came from Caithness where the marriage took place, there is one birth entry which is a possibility given her age in the 1851 census, unfortunately only father's name is included:
JANET FALCONER Christening: 04 DEC 1821 Latheron, Caithness, Scotland
Parents: Father: ALEXR. FALCONER
No clues from the 1851 Census in Yorkshire as to what her mother's name could be given that apart from first born daughter Helen, they seemed to have had a big healthy family of boys!
Regards.

See my above post, sueh. Any chance it's the correct family? :) Ancestry has decided to change the name to "Borne"!

Ooh missed that last edit Hume :o That does look a good possibility for them in 1841 doesn't it?
Just looking at the family's entry for 1861 and at last some more girls ::) Sue, I can't see father Alexander with them on the index. Was it this one or a later one that he shows as living with them? I was just wondering what his occupation was if it showed on the English census.
Regards.

There is a birth place or county for Janet in the 1861 but hard to make out but certainly not Caithness.
Alexander Falconer, father shows in the 1871 census and at 80, no occupation is given.
Given that the second born daughter to David and Janet was a Catherine, looking at the 1841 census in Scotland, there is an Alexander and Catherine Falconer showing as born outside of the country living in Thurso, where Janet and David married.
Alex Falconer 48, teacher of musert (music?)
Cathrine Falconer 48
Alex Falconer 14
Will Falconer 12
Ann Falconer 6
Address: Cowgate, Thurso
I think going by the children, that this is this couple's marriage:
ALEXANDER FALCONER Marriages: Spouse: KATHARINE SMITH
Marriage: 11 JAN 1816 Forres, Moray, Scotland
Now I've traced David and Janet through the censuses from 1851 in England. Apart from 1861 where birth places are given, the rest all show Scotland.
Did David die between 1881-1891? I can see an entry for a Janet Horn, 68, widow, lodging in Grainsby with a birth place of FORRES, Scotland which I thought might connect with the Alexander Falconer and K/Catherine Smith above.
Regards.

Hi , not sure when david died.I havnt found that yet .The last census i had him in Grimsby as a retired naval pensioner.
-
Can't easily see him in 1891, just that entry for Janet. By 1901 she looks to be living with her daughter Catherine (Kate Appleby) in Grimsby.
-
One possibility for his death from freebmd:
Deaths Dec 1881
HORN David 69 Caistor 7a 349

Thanks very much for all the info ;D
