Title: Dr Barnados Homes
Post by: countrybumkin on Thursday 07 June 07 09:40 BST (UK)
Any info please on the daughters of William & Emma Allison from near Scarborough after Emma's death in 1902. Son's were sent to Canada from Barnados.

Hello countrybumkin, welcome to Rootschat

You're not giving us much to go on with this one. Research after 1901 is not easy.

Were the daughters also in Barnados ?  If so do you know where, do you have the name of the home they were in?

Your first port of call would be the local records office, look for Guardians Minutes books, admissions and discharge registers.

Barnados also have an aftercare department which can help with children who were in Barnados homes:

http://www.barnardos.org.uk/what_we_do/work_with_former_barnardos_children.htm

(I think they might charge for family history inquiries).

I think I've found the family in 1901 in Burniston (Scarborough district), indexed as 'Allinson' (you should watch out for name variants especially in cases like this)
William Allinson, 41, b. Harwood Dale, Yorkshire, Ag Lab
Emma, 27, b. dit
Lancelot, 8, b. dit (on freebmd as Lancelot Allison)
Ethel M, 6, b. dit (on freebmd as Ethel May Allison)
Herbert A, 5, b. dit (on freebmd as Herbert Arthur Allison)
Elsie M, 3, b. dit (on freebmd as Elsie Mary Allison)
Laura E, 2, b. dit (on freebmd as Laura Helen Allison, presumably the enumerator heard 'Ellen' and put 'E').
Ena E, 1, b. Cloughton (on freebmd as Ana Emma Allison)

So presuming all the boys went to Canada, the ones we are looking for are:
Ethel May
Elsie Mary
Laura Helen
Ana Emma
(another, born after census?)

Do you know if William remarried? There are some possible William Allison marriages in Scarborough after Emma's death.

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,216258.0.html - this person here on Rootschat has some information on the marriage of Ana Emma Allison
http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/YORKSGEN/2002-04/1019660135 - this looks like something about Ethel May
http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/YORKSGEN/2002-03/1016641321 - and something on Laura! (aka Lora).

Thanks everyone for all the links etc.  Mazz and I are already in touch, she has been such a big help.  I am finding it really difficult finding my way around this site so sorry if I take a long time to reply.

I researched the Allison family a few years ago for my next door neighbours father.

He is from the daughter who went to Barnardo's after their mum died, her two brothers were sent to Canada.

His name is Herbert Lancelot  :D and he is the son of Ethel May

A couple of years ago he gave me a bouquet and a kiss telling me it was his birthday and he was going home to await a telephone call from his cousins in Canada - I found them for him just weeks before.

Please PM me  ;D  ;D  ;D
