Title: BLADES family on the 1841 census??
Post by: pauline5556555 on Monday 11 June 07 17:51 BST (UK)
Hi To All,

I am trying to find a family called BLADES :

I have them on the 1851 living at Low Abbotside, Yorks

WILLIAM BLADES Lodger b about 1799 at Lunds, Yorks
AGNES BLADES Wife b 1804 in Mallerstang
GEORGE Son? b 1832 in Mallerstang
PARKIN BLADES b 1829 in Mallerstang

I do not know of any other children, and would also be interested to find the surname of AGNES before she married WILLIAM.

I also have information on the 1851 census at Low Abbotside, Yorks :

JAMES BLADES Head b 1776 Smithy hill ( would anyone know where this may have been ?? )  I am wondering if he is connected to the above??

I would be so very grateful of any information on this family, I am looking on behalf of a friend who does not have access to a computer.  So I am hoping that I can try and help her find more about this family.

Many thanks,
Pauline.

Hi Pauline,

I have a Margaret Blades (wife of James Blade, High Abbotside) as a testator in the 1859 York Probate and the probate of a Richard Blades, Simonstone Aysgarth (near High Abbotside I think) testator Mary Blades. Let me know if these records could be of use to you and I will post or pm them.

Cheers
Bron  :)

Hi Bron,

I would love to have a copy of these documents that you have mentioned.

I am very interested in regard of your mention of HIGH Abbotside, when I have spoken of LOW Abbotside.   Especially when this is with the surname of BLADES.

As I have said in my first e-mail, this family is not connected to myself, but to a friend who does not have access to a computer or the internet.

So anything that I can find, she will be absolutely thrilled with.

Thank you so very much for this, it is really appreciated.

Many thanks,
Pauline.

Hi Pauline,

Here are the following two probates for Blades. I dont have the original docs but rather help transcribe these records for Sheffield Records Online.

The first one relates to Anthony Metcalf, Margaret Blades, testator.
Letters of Administration (with the Will annexed) of the personal estate and effects of Anthony Metcalf late of White Birks House in the township of Hawes in the parish of Aysgarth in the county of York yeoman deceased who died 30 March 1859 at White Birks House aforesaid were granted at York to Margaret Blades (wife of James Blades of Washat Gill in Lunds in the township of High Abbotside in the said parish farmer) and Isabella Coates (wife of James Coates of White Birks House aforesaid farmer) the daughters and two of the surviving residuary legatees named in the said Will they having been first sworn.
Sworn 01/08/1851 Effects under 800GBP

Second one relates to Richard Blades
The Will of Richard Blades late of Simonstone in the parish of Aysgarth in the county of York farmer deceased who died 23 March 1859 at Simonstone aforesaid was proved at York by the oath of Mary Blades of Simonstone aforesaid widow the relict and the sole executrix.
Sworn 02/06/1859 Effects under 450GBP

Cheers
Bron  ;)

Hi Bron,

Thank you so much for the information that you have sent.

Looks really hopeful that my friend will be able to connect to these.  As she also has a connection to the surname of METCALFE ( she is going to be over the moon!!! )

Many thanks again and greatly appreciated.

Pauline.

Hi Pauline,
My pleasure. As an afterthought I checked the probate records and there are over two pages of Metcalfes, many from Aysgarth. If you can get more details from your friend I will be happy to post what I have that may relate.

Cheers

Hi Bron,

You are so very kind to help in this search.

My friend is over the moon, I have asked her about the METCALFE / MEDCALF connections there is not many at the moment, this is what we have.

PARKIN METCALFE who was christened on the 25th July 1830 in Mallerstang.  His parents were a JOSHUA and ISABELLA METCALFE ( maiden name unknown at this time. )

AGNES METCALFE married a WILLIAM PARKIN BLADES 01/3/1825 at Kirkby Stephen, Westmorland.  ( I am going to assume that she was born 1800???  But obviously this needs to be checked out )

Thank you again Bron, it is so much appreciated the help you are giving in this search.

Regards,
Pauline.

Hi Pauline,

Sorry its taken so long to get back to you. The only probate I can find that may relate is that of Isabella Metcalfe as follows

Letters of Administration (with the Will annexed) of the personal estate and effects of Cuthbert Metcalfe late of Keighley in the county of York gentleman deceased who died 11 May 1826 at Keighley aforesaid left unadministered by Leonard Metcalfe the son and one of the executors named in the said Will also by Thomas Dawson the sole acting executor of the Will of the said Leonard Metcalfe and also by Thomas Dawson the son and the acting executor of the Will of the said Thomas Dawson were granted at the Principal Registry to Isabella Alicia Metcalfe of Great Ilford in the county of Essex spinster one of the grandchildren and one of the residuary legatees substituted in the said Will she having been first sworn. Former grants Exchequer Court of York July 1826 August 1833 and February 1836.

Effects under 1500GBP proved 17/09/1858

Also another possibility
The Will of Jane Metcalfe late of Askrigg in the parish of Aysgarth in the county of York widow deceased who died 3 April 1859 at Askrigg aforesaid was proved at the Principal Registry by the oath of Bella Metcalfe of Askrigg aforesaid spinster the daughter and the sole executrix.

Effects under 300GBP proved 07/12/1859

This one is somewhat closer to Abbotside. There are many Metcalfes in the Aysgarth area in the probates. Couldnt find Joshua in the records.

Hope this is of help.

Cheers
Bron   ;)

Just as a matter of interest there is still a farm called Blades in Mallerstang.  It is run as a restaurant now - very popular and you have to book weeks in advance!
