The marriage cert of his daughter Mary Davies in 1874, says her address is Canal Head, Aberdare, and that William Davies her father was a Canal Agent but I am not sure that Gwen was her mother.

This is a good possible as many details from 1861 match. all family are down as Davis
H0107 / 2460 / 147/ 26
Aberdare
William Davis H 37 Iron weigher Carmarthenshire
Mary " 31 wife Brecon
Thomas " 9 son Aberdare
David " 5 son "
Ann " dau 1 "
There are a number of lodgers including Anthony Rees who could be same from 1881?
If this is yours I think there is a good possible that some of the lodgers are brothers or relations of William & Mary? There is a marriage for William Davies - Mary Williams around the right time for first son Thomas, although you need one of the childrens birth certs to confirm.
Also I think that the age gap between Margaret/Magaretta (He is a widower in 61) that he married Gwen between 1861 -1871 and Margaretta is her dau. Mary Jnr is prob from the first marriage, and with relatives on the 1861 maybe? Just a few thoughts.

Hi Cas,
Thank you for the census details, much appreciated ;D
If only the children had second names so I could find the correct birth certificate....oh so many to choose from with those names.
I have seen two Mary's b1854 staying with grandparents in the 1861...hopefully I will now be able to identify another generation. ;)

You could try writing to Merthyr Registry with what you know to try and pin down birth certs for one of the children. If they cannot find anything, will not charge you.
Maybe Ann is your best bet, with address from above census and fathers occ. of iron weigher may help.

Thanks Cas.
I am expecting some certificates to arrive on Monday, and if they don't help I will do that.
Many thanks for the tip of writing to Methyr Registry, I admit I am really sruggling with proving one generation to another with this side of the family.

Good luck with the certs, know the feeling soooo well when your waiting on certs ::)
Will defo recommend the service from Merthyr reg, they helped me with Davies and Jones, sorted it in the end, gave my telephone no and they rang to confirm I was happy with what they found before cashing cheque. Just tell them everything you know, if you do write.
