When an address is listed on the census as:
Pontmorlais, Merthyr Tydfil- Does the "Pontmorlais" mean a part of town or is it the name of a street? Sorry, I am clueless. ???

Just type 'Genuki' into google followed by placename.
I have found it invaluable. There is also a very good Merthyr site on the net just type old Merthyr Tydfil into google or whatever you are looking for it is suprising the info pictures you can get etc.
good luck
Cas :)

Thanks for the "Genuki" tip...LOTS of information!
You are just terrific.

Pontmorlais is the area around the top of High Street in the centre of Merthyr. It is near where the world's first steam locomotive, developed in 1804 by Cornishman Richard Trevithick, ran down what is still called the Old Tramroad.
It was also a street name and (as Pontmorlais West) still exists.
Pontmorlais means "the bridge over the Morlais (Brook)".
Regards (and welcome to Rootschat),
Gareth
PS. Just a thought: if you include the name of the place (in this case Merthyr, Pontmorlais or both) in the title of your post, it's more likely to catch the eye of someone familiar with the area.

Thanks, Gareth. I am new to this so I appreciate the "tips".
