Title: Do you know Lymington?
Post by: Marjorie on Sunday 24 June 07 10:16 BST (UK)
In 1838 a family member was born in, what looks like, Viensia Row Lymington.  Does anyone recognise this name and does the Row still exist, or has it been renamed?    ...iensia is clear, but the first letter is not so clear - it may be an N.

Any info. would be much appreciated.

Many thanks.

Might it be Captains Row?

What was the name and have you found them on 1841 census?  They might still be there.

Hi Little Nell

No, it is not Captains Row.  It is '?iensia' or, at a squeeze,
?iersia.   By 1841 they had moved to Southampton.

Just thought it would be nice to visit the address in Lymington if it still existed but needed to sort out the name first!

Many thanks for you help anyway.

Marjorie

Could this name, with any stretch of the imagination, be 'Lentune'?

In ancient times, the town of Lymington was known as 'Lentune'.

When I had a query relating to Lymington, I got in touch with the St Barbe Museum there. The Curator was very helpful.

Good luck with your research!

Hi Marjorie,

I walked with the enumerator this afternoon and wondered if the attached is what you seek?  It is in the vicinity of Gosport Street and Bridge Row/Road.  I suspect that it has become something else now.

Thank you Indaloman - would love to hear if your friend  does come up with anything.  The family name was Wheeler, the wife's maiden name was Benger.

Many thanks for your help.  Yes, that looks very much like the address on the certificate.    Do you mean you actually walked the streets of Lymington today looking for the address or searched through the enumerator's records? !   Thank you so very much.   I have found Gosport Street and Bridge Row on the map.

Hello Marjorie

I can see now that - even with a stretch of the imagination - that name could not be 'Lentune'!

It looks as if it could be 'Vienna' or something like that but, hopefully, the Curator of the St Barbe Museum will be able to put you right.

Best wishes

Lyn S

This is an 1840 map of Lymington (not sure it extends far enough though)

Looks as if a copy of "Lymington High Street Then & Now" by Robert Coles 1984, might hold the answer.

I think it is Vienna Rows and "V Cottage" below that could be Vienna Cottage which is in Bridge Road.

It's mentioned on the Hampshire Treasures pages http://www.hants.gov.uk/hampshiretreasures/vol05/page186.html

Hi Shaun

The photo copy of the name was in fact sent to me by Nell presumably from an original census.   My original query comes from a birth certificate which gives the address of Viensia (?) Row - and the photo copy looks VERY similar - however, no cottage name or number given on the certificate,  so I don't think it can be the same property, unless, of course Vienna Row was in Bridge Road!

Thank you also the the Hampshire Treasures page - what a super site - I will explore that more!

Hi Bearkat

Thank you for the 1840 map.  As you say I don't think it extends quite far enough because, from info. received, I think it was at the other end of Gosport Street.

However, I will go to the library and look for the book suggested.

Very many thanks.

Looking at the 1851 census there was a Vienna Place next to Vienna Cottage in the Gosport St/Bridge Road/Miller Lane area .

Not sure if this is any use but Hampshire RO has this Will:

Will of Benjamin Rogers of Vienna Cottage, Lymington, Hampshire, Gent 1831

Oh well done Shaun!

I looked through the enumerator's schedules until I found it.  It did look like Vienna, but I didn't want to suggest it, just in case.

Yes that is brilliant but I am looking for (what now appears to be) Vienna ROW- not cottage, it is definitely ROW and no cottage name or number given unfortunately.   But it would appear from all the info. you have all given me that Viensia is in fact Vienna.  So it must be in that area.   Very many thanks for everyone you have made this site come up trumps once again!

Hi Marj

I suspect Vienna Row is/was a row of cottages in Bridge Rd near Vienna Cottage, if they are still there you never there might be a faint plaque saying Vienna Row even if they are no longer known as such. If you like I can take a look next week when I visit my parents.

Jan ;)

Shaun - you are BRILLIANT! 8) 8)

That old post you found refers to my Wheeler family - most of which I have and agree, just didn't know about  Robert  who emigrated to South Africa.   I am now going to try and contact the sender - I do hope she still has the same email address!    And, of course , this confirms the Vienna Row link.

I am so thrilled!

Thank you so very much

Hi Jan

I would love you to have a look if at all possible.   I do actually live in Hampshire but am unable to travel so do appreciate your very kind offer.  (Just hope the weather is a little better than today!)

Thank you so much

Hi Shaun

After all that excitement I am now feeling very deflated!  I contacted Roots Web (not a site I've used before) to try and contact the sender but unfortunately her email address is no longer recognised!  I suppose it was a long shot I couldn't find anything else from her after Nov. 2004.   But at least I have another side of the family to follow -

And sorted the address I wanted in Lymington!

Many thanks to everyone.

Sorry to hear that Marjorie but there are an awful lot of defunct email addresses on these sites. I had a similar experience this morning - I found a surnames list with Gale in Lymington ( one of my interests) on it, sent an email to the contact address and had it bounce back on me as address unknown. Annoying isn't it.

Yes - at least I can follow up her grandfather's details - hopefully.

Sorry you had an unsuccesful morning especially as you have helped me so much today.

Best of luck

A Jane HEWITT married Simon BENGER, a mariner, of Lymington.  They had a son Charles, baptised in Boldre in 1814.  Jane was widowed by 1817 and living in Lymington.

Hi Bearkat - Thank you for that, they could be related to Maria Benger.  However, according to the 1841 census Maria (nee Benger) was born in 1820/21 - however I believe that ages were rounded up or down to the nearest 5 in 1841 census, so I suppose she could have been born earlier, or of course, Simon may not have been the father.

Many thanks I will keep on file and try and follow up.

Hi Shaun - thanks for that.       I wonder what the connection with Vienna was?

Lyn S very kindly went to Lymington and sent me photos of Vienna Cottage and the railway line a couple of doors away! There apparently was no indication of Vienna Row (or presumably Vienna Place).     But I am quite happy that this was, if not the actual spot, at least very close to where my family lived.

Many thanks for your interest,

Marj

Hallo Janan

Thank you for the offer but, in fact, Lyn S very kindly took some photos of Vienna Cottage which she has sent me, she somehow managed to take some brilliant photos presumably between the heavy downpours.

But thank you so much for the offer

Hi Marj,
Glad Lyn was able to do that for you :D I would imagine Vienna Row/Place may well have been demolished when the railway was built.

Janan's probably right about the railway. It was constructed 1856-1858.

Does anyone know any further details about Simon Benger??

A Jane HEWITT married Simon BENGER, a mariner, of Lymington.  They had a son Charles, baptised in Boldre in 1814.  Jane was widowed by 1817 and living in Lymington.

Hi,

Welcome to RootsChat.  :)

Simon appears to have been buried 27 Aug 1817 in Fawley, aged 24.

I'm afraid I cannot find where he was born/baptised.  :(

Mariners are a nuisance.  :-\

They tend to come from much further afield than neighbouring parishes.

Benger isn't a common surname in Hampshire.  There are plenty in Wiltshire though.

Thanks for your replies - much appreciated!   Where did you find the information about where he was buried?

I believe he was born about 1790 in Hampshire England.

Thanks

Do you know if Simon was born on the Isle of Wight or could have been non-conformist or Catholic?

I believe Simon Benger was born in Hampshire.

Where did you find out he was a mariner?

The information I have was he was a flour miller, married Jane Hewett on 10th August, 1813 and they had three children - Charles and twins Mary Ann & Maria.

I found the information in a book called Comyn's New Forest, a Directory of the reisdents of Boldre 1817.

It lists Jane as daughter of William & Mary HEWITT who were living at Lymington Undershore.  Jane's married name is BENGER and she is widowed and living at Lymington.  There is a note to say that she married Simon BENGER, a mariner, of Lymington.  They had a son Charles baptised 12 June 1814 at Boldre.

Does anyone know where I can buy/borrow a copy Comyn's New Forest?

Sadly it is now out of print.  :(

You should be able to get a copy through inter-library loan.
