I would be grateful if someone could look up the 1861 & 1871 census records for William Jeffery or Jeffrey and his wife Elizabeth Cain. This couple had at least 2 children:
Robert Jeffery born 4 Apr 1859 at Middle Or New Parish, Greenock; and
Martha Maria Jeffery born 29 Mar 1860 at Middle Or New Parish, Greenock

Hi coonwarra
No results coming up for the family in Greenock in either 1861 or 1871

Hi Ann
Thanks very much for looking - I wonder where they could be hiding?
The only clue that I have at the moment is that Martha Maria Jeffery married an Irishman named Samuel Smith and gave birth to their first child in Ireland in 1885. Martha and Samuel were living in Lasswade, Midlothian by time that their second child was born in 1886.

I've had no luck either.
Perhaps they all moved to Ireland?

Hi John
I reckon so and no way of finding out! grrr

Hi Johnboy and Ann
Thank you both for your work on this. This is a real bummer because I believe that most of the Irish census records have not survived.
The joys of ancestor research!

Hi coonwarra
Yup lots of irish stuff is long gone but may be possible to track him via Griffiths valuation if you know which part of Ireland. But it would only give householder and not other members of family.

Hi coonwarra,
William Jeffrey and Elizabeth Cain are my great great grandparents and their daughter Martha Maria Jeffrey is my great grandmother.
I have been unable to get any further back than William and Elizabeth but I have quite a bit of info coming forward to the present day, Martha's family in particular.
If you are interested in this info please get in touch.
