Hi Ozybob.
Many many thanks for the lookups.
With Catherine Ellen Harris, you have b1837 - was this the ony record for a Catherine Harris, as I have my Catherine marrying James Dobson 1878 in Horton Tas? I had her pegged being born a bit later than 1837, say in the 50's.
Good news with Emma. Could I ask you if you could check her firstborn for me as I have a query with it. Emma married John Lynch in 1879, at Hamilton. Her firstborn was born in 1879 according to the name indexes, but there is no christian name. She had 8 sons after the first.

Hi Ashe
I have the AVRI and the only Catherine Harris listed as born Tasmania is the one given by Bob - b. 1837. Father was listed as Henry on the AVRI. There are 2 Catherine Harris's born in NSW in 1857 & one in 1858 (you can check them online). The marriage you mention gives the age of Catherine as 21, so your 1857 would be about the birth year. Do you know if she was born in Australia? Could she have been an immigrant?
The Lynch birth on the AVRI in 1879 - 3 May - only gives M for name (& sex Male)

Catherine's second marriage to John Dabner also supports a birth of around 1857/58 for her. Do you have her death at all? her birthplace would show on it, if in Tasmania after 1897 - and if the informant knows. I could not see it in the index to 1899.

Hi Everyone
Trish
Thanks for clarifying that there was only one birth record for a Catherine Harris. Did not have any idea where she was born, just guessed Tassie as she was married there twice. Will go further afield to other States and immigration. Wow 9 sons.
Christine
Haven't any info re death details at this present stage. Many thanks for checking for her death prior to 1899.
Ozybob
Your list of the children of Emma's confirms my list.
I really appreciate the time and help you have all given.

If she died after 1914 then her parents may be recorded - perhaps correctly. She may have been born in Tasmania, there are lots of births not registered. I have a family who had kids there about that time and only two of the six are registered.

Hi,
'but there is no Christian name'
On the NAA site which offers the records of many of your Lynch family, there is of especial interestone digitised for Horace Stanton Lynch.
Being young he is required to furnish a letter of permission from his parents which is there in the file.
I note that John Lynch signs himself
John Lynch SENR [senior][you don't write that unless there is a junior]
This makes one ask
Who is John Lynch JUNIOR .
No such person is listed in the births to the couple. Could it be the unnamed firstborn?

Hi All
Apologies for not replying earlier but did not receive notification of posts.
Jenn
Oops - no Catherine didn't have the 9 sons, it was Emma Bailey. Many thanks for the birth details, didn't have that one.
Goonie
Many thanks for all the info - had the birth years but no dates. Would appreciate any info on James. I do know that he died whilst being held in custody and an inquest was held - outcome natural causes???
Sue
Could you tell me what the NAA stands for, haven't heard of that site before?
Horace did serve in WW1, and I have him being 20 in 1914, so he would have had to have his parents permission. Maybe that is what the letter is about?
I haven't his firstborn named either, so it could be a strong possibility.

Ashe - You may have already found these but will post them D
Mother - Elizabeth ?

James Dobson parents: Father John Wright Dobson marries Elizabeth unkown(mother) 1846 Hobart, Tasmania.
Siblings: George 1840 Clarence, James(of course) 1842 Hobart, Sarah 1842 Hobart, Gilbert John 1844 Hobart, Catharine 1846 Hobart all in Tasmania. Think I have marriages but without cert. can't be sure.
Hope this is of some help - Goonie
-
Hi Goonie
I do have that info, but cannot be sure if it's the right John. Am applying for James birth cert, and hopefully (fingers crossed) that it may give me the mother's name as well.
Many thanks for your lookup it is much appreciated.
Cheers

There is a marriage of a John Dobson married an Elizabeth Stokes on 18 May 1840 in Hobart. There are no other John Dobson's married to an Elizabeth - listed - only the one above.
One earlier John Dobson's (1) - m Kate Willis on 26/1/1839 in Launceston.
All other entries for John are later.

Hi Webby
I do have that John Dobson/Elizabeth Stokes marriage as a possibility, however on the family name indexes online, the children of Elizabeth and the children of John Wright are different - hence I have a ?? now.
I have just found out that there is no birth registered for James in 1842? If John Wright is his father there was a daughter Sarah also born in 1842, they may be twins?
Many thanks
Ashe

There is a Birth registered for a James Dobson on 9/9/1842 with father's name of John Dobson and mother as Elizabeth Haukes (this could be a mistake).
Two entries for a Sarah - one a baptism in 1842 and a birth in 1847. Looks as though Sarah (of 1842) may have died???
All the baptisms had father listed as John (apart from Catharine's and he is entered as John Wright Dobson) - mother Elizabeth.
The birth's had : Father - John and Mother Elizabeth Stokes (apart from James' which had such a strange name!!!).
I did check for Haukes.....strangely there is a couple of listings for Hauke.....but nothing for an Elizabeth Hauke(s).

Hi Ashe - James Dobson birth is registered 9/91842. Reg. No. 1299/1843
Sarah Dobson baptism is registered 24/10/1842 Reg. No. 1759/1842
There is a Sarah Dobson dies 11/2/ 1846 age 3 yrs in Hobart Reg. No. 953/1846 which would fit with her born 1842.
These I found on Tasmanian Pioneer Index 1803 - 1899.
I would think these are the family you are searching and it does list in these Indexes that Elizabeth Haukes is the mother of James and the other children it just states Elizabeth. Anyway the birth cert. should clear that up. If it lists sibling George on it, I think the list is the right one. Elizabeth Stokes and James Dobson have two males in 1856 + 1859 but no name and they are born in Horton
Unsure if Tasmanian records actually list siblings but guess you will find out soon enough. Be patient as I had to wait 5 weeks to get marriage cert. and I gave them all the information. Goodluck - Goonie

The early Tasmanian certificates (to 1900) are available as image prints from the archives. They are freely available to search if you are at the archives & when I was last there it cost 50 cents to print a page from microfilm. I assume this could be much cheaper than buying certificates & worth a query to the archives. These films may also be available at LDS centres or Australian libraries/gen societies. According to SAG they are freely available, certificates not needed.
http://www.sag.org.au/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=78
There is not alot on the registrations/certificates pre 1900, despite civil registration starting in 1839. I certainly don't remember seeing any siblings on details for my family birth records (and these weren't added until 1919). Check the above link - there is an option for certificate content

Webby & Goonie
Thank goodness there is a registration. :) Many thanks to you both for all of the info and your time. It will help greatly, especially getting the reg no's. I noted that John Wright was transported out here, Elizabeth????a free.
Trish
Thanks for the info re the availibility of image prints and the site for certificate content. Certainly the images work out a lot cheaper, however as I live in NSW that is a bit difficult. My son may be going to Hobart next week for work, so he may have time to go to the archive office for me - here's hoping.
Cheers

Trish is correct in saying that pre 1900 images have been put onto microfilm and are at most libraries in the State.
Pre 1900 BDM list only the bare minimum of information.
The births will tell you only the date, name of child, father (occupation), mother (you will probably get a maiden name) and their abode (in Tasmania) and who registered the child. That's about it!.
A John Dobson is listed in the Convicts Permission to Marry. John came on the "Surrey" from the Down London in 1832. He sought permission to marry Elizabeth STOKES (free) on 13/4/1840. Ref: Con 52/1 - pg 37. (AOT ref) RGD 37/1: 1840/874.
John's convict reference for the AOT are:
Conduct record CON 3/10
Description List CON 18/20
Appropriation List CSO 1/649/14579
CON 27/6.
Your son's going to be spending some time in the Archives Office by the look of the above info!. You will be able to find out quite a bit about John at least.

Hi Webby
Fantastic details - hopefully it will help my son save time at the archive office.
As we have so many ancestors on 2 sides of the family in Tassie, plus numerous large families (9-14 children), the information that Goonie, Trish and yourself have given me will help enormously.
Many thanks

Ashe - It might pay you to send an email to the Tas. Archives and inquire what they charge to do a search for you. Give them a rough idea what you are looking for. I had one done and they sent me the results and invoiced me to pay. Think it was $20 something - can't remember exactly. It would save you some time and the more you tell them about what you are looking for the less work for them to do. Something to think about. Good luck - let us know how you get on. Cheers Goonie

Hi All.
Emma Bailey was my great grandmother she married John Lynch at New Norfolk on the 21.8.1879.
she had two children prior to marriage one 6.11.1876 and another 3.5.1879. Oscar was my Grandfather. I have most of the family history, if you need to know any let me know.
