Looks like it could be DAVIDSON next door ... no one of that name in Lincoln in 1871 apparently.
-
I've just realized , because you two are mainly the only one's that try to answer my queries , I keep muddling you up. you being Geoff and Ricky. in my defense , I have had a rubbish day at work, ::)
I will consentrate. promise. Eilleen.

Eilleen

Geoff
The one next door to the Davidson shop, I played around for ages with the photo last nite and all I could make out was Hardware and a name above it

I thankyou for that, what I am trying to prove , or not , as the case maybe, two gentlemen named Buttery, lived at 260 high street, one was a chain maker, nail maker, etc, the other a tobacconist. I have 1881,1885, 1894, 1895, 1899, 1901 and 1903 trade directory for that part of the high street, but I need now to pin down this Davidson ???
then it would be correct that the shop with the big horseshoe is the Buttery family, still with me ??? Eilleen.
-
Just to quote from a book of mine ...
Opened in May 1911, the Lincoln Theatre, later re-named the Grand Electric Cinema was Lincoln's first purpose built picture house. This mid 18th century building at the top of High St, formerly Garmston House, (at one time the residence of Albert Wingfield HALL, Mayor of Lincoln from 1893-95) formed the entrance to the new auditorium which extended as far as Hungate.
There is nothing on the photo that resembles either of your shops.
-
Yes that's the one.
-
Hi Looking back through the census, the only Davidson at 260 High street was in 1861 and she was a housekeeper
William Walker head wid 41 hair dresser/tabaconist born Lincoln
Frederick walker son u/m 5 months "
Elizabeth Davidson serv u/m 24 house keeper born enderby, Lincs

I have a feeling , that Davidson, ( the shop ) is going to be after 1903, which mean's hours more ,spent in the libary on my day off, looking through directory's. Eilleen.
-
Ricky, just a question :) have you got the other side of the road ???
from 257 to 264. in either 1871 or 1861, please tell me if I am pushing my luck :) Eilleen.
-
Hi Eilleen
Just had a look at the 1851 census at 260 high sreet was a hair dressers shop
will have alook at the 1861 high street
ricky
-
I see AW HALL was on the other side of the street in 1900 No 268 just above Grantham St.
My though about the photo is that the street isn't steep enough for that part of High St - but if there is a slope up from L to R, it can't be the other side of the street.
The attached photo is from another of Laurence Elvin's books - Lincoln in the 50s and 60s. The chap on the pavement is walking past the Grand (closed in 1960).
-
I will get to the bottom of my original photo, :) I will just have to keep trying. Eilleen.

Perhaps if you ask Little Nell nicely she will move it back again. I've extracted my last photo from my Recycle Bin in case it's needed.

Eilleen
So how far have we got now, still carn't find this Davidson ;)
ricky
-
morning Ricky. how far ??? Well thanks to your searching , I have people who lived and worked along that part of the High street, during 1861 and 1871. on my day off next week I will go back to the library and try to locate more photograph's of the shop's along there,
my quest is to be really familiar with that end of the street, I get quiet a few tourist call into the shop , who say " my ancestor's had a shop around here somewhere, " and I would love to be able to give them fact's figure's and meat on the bone sort of stuff, maybe I should just get a life :). talking of which, must go mow the grass, while the sunshine's. better half is out fishing and has forgot were the mower is kept ;) bless. Eilleen.
