I am hoping someone can help me...
My 3 x great grandparents were Thomas and Ann Whitfield.
Thomas was born in 1836 in Newborough
Ann born 1838 in Glinton.
I have there daughter, (my 2 x great grandmother) Minnie's birth certificate (1871) which states that Ann, her mother, was formerly Crowson. I have searched through all the marriages registers for Crowsons between 1855 and 1871 but found no reference which links both Ann Crowson and Thomas Whitfield.
Thomas and Ann had a number of children - the earliest on record is John who is shown as 3 months on the 1861 census suggesting that Thomas and Ann married somewhere between 1858 and 1861.
There is a marriage record in the Newborough registers of a Thomas and Ann Robinson in 1860 but i don't know if this is the same Ann and she had married before?
Can anyone help with this?
Regards
Richard

There is a marr ............... forget that one lost the plot time for bed. ??? don't know how to delete. :-X

Sorry - i may not have written out my posting very well.
It is Thomas who was the Whitfield by birth - not Ann.
It is her who i am puzzling over. I'm ideally wanting there marriage certificate so i can researcher further back with these two.

Two possibilities occur to me.
There is no father in the marriage record for Ann Robinson. This suggests that she was illegitimate. Perhaps her father was a Crowson and her mother a Robinson, or the other way round.
See if you can find the baptism of an Ann Crowson or Robinson.
Or the first Ann died and he married another Ann.
In a different parish or at the register office.
Perhaps getting the birth certificate of the first child would help.
Try looking in 1841 and 1851 census for Ann under both names.
Is the information in 1861, 1871 etc census consistent with being the same Ann

Thank you for your suggestions.
I had considered the second suggestion; however, i found this to be unlikely as the Ann is shown in the 1861, 81 and 91 censuses as being born in the same year and the same place so i think it is doubtful there was two marriages for Thomas.
Can you provide me with a full transcription of the Thomas and Ann marriage in 1860? Its making me wonder who witnessed the marriage and would be good to have the full transcription for my records.
If the marriage is the right one in 1860 your theory about her being illegitimate would sound plausible.
Do you think Ann's death certificate would help?
I can't find an appropriate Ann Crowson on the 1841 census but there is an Ann Robinson on the 1841 census in Glinton aged 3. She is living with Thomas and Rebecca Robinson who are 50 and 55 respectively. I know the ages were rounded up and down but they seem a lot older than her. Wonder if they are her grandparents? Any further suggestions?

Thomas WHITFIELD of this parish bachelor, age 24, labourer, father John deceased
Ann ROBINSON of this parish spinster, age 22 no father given
24th Jan 1860 at Newborough
This is from the Soke of Peterborough 1700-1860 marriage index.
The index does not include the witnesses.
It is unlikely that Ann's death certificate would help.
Seems likely that she is with her grandparents in 1841
Thomas ROBINSON married Rebecca GRIFFIN 26th Feb 1809
both of this parish, at Glinton

Thank you for that.
I would think it almost certain that Ann Robinson and Ann Crowson are the same person. Mystery why she uses both names - as you say it may refer to her father. Next step to find a birth certificate / baptism record for Ann.
Thanks for your help.

Superb!
What a fantastic bit of research.
Thank you ever so much for the help on this. I had always wanted to have a look through the local parish registers for Newborough and Glinton but given my distance from the area i had always intended going at a later date...
Given the proof the research can go on.
It's good to be able to go back on both sides of her family - what a change it makes from all the other unknown / no recorded fathers on birth / marriage certificates. And it's good to see that John Crowson remained present in his daughters life. I will endeavour to find out what happened to him - whether or not he married Mary Robinson or just remained a part of Ann's life.
Thanks again fr your time and help

I've just had a look on the 1881 census and seems to have answered the query i just posted:-
There is a John Crowson living with wife Mary (born Glinton) and granddaughter Mary C Whitfield. Looks like John did indeed marry Mary following the birth of their illigimate daughter. All the research fits for this.
It almosts sounds like a 21st century approach to relationships and families given the birth of the child and marriage of parents there-after.
Thanks again for those who helped me with this result.

There is a marriage that is possible in the G.R.O. indexes.
