Hi again Scrappyshaz
I'm interested in this family because I have some Landers who came from Albourne and Twineham, I wonder whether we have a connection as that's not that far from Brighton?
I have a William Lander born 1785 in Albourne whose children were:
John, Elizabeth, Henry, Mary, Frances and Ann all born 1812 and 1824.
Do you know anything about David's parents?
Kerry
-
Wow Kerry - that was FASSSSST!!!
Thanks thats a great help. I didn't find my Angelina with the family so will have to keep looking for her. If you notice her in Sussex she was Angelina Cross BURFORD b 1851 Bury St Edmunds Sussex, married to a Richard HUTCHINSON - but probably separated. She was with the Landers children in 1901 at 1 Black rock Cottage - so hoped to find her there in 1891
Such is life!!
Thanks again for your superfast response,

Hi again Kerry,
I just looked David up on IGI & he was christened 23-2-1840 at Rottingdean to John LAUNDER & Sarah.
I have no other details on the Landers sorry as I'm chasing Angelina!!
Cheers

Never mind, I'm sure David must fit in somewhere.
Just had a quick look for Angelina, she's not showing herself! Can I just clarify was she born in Bury, Sussex or Bury St Edmunds, Essex?

Hi Kerry
It may help to know that I have done the Lander family tree for a friend of mine (Victor Lander) and the Black Rock Cottage lot do relate back to Albourne & Hurstpierpoint.

Notes
The baptisms suggest that the Lander family must have moved to Rottingdean between 1838 – 1840.
Futhermore, Joseph may not have cared whether he was born in Albourne or Rottingdean and just told the census enumerator the first thing that came into his head.
Joseph above (born c1836) married Lucy Moppet Dec 1861
Side note.
Lucy Moppet was an illegitimate child and at birth was given her mother’s maiden surname. Although her parents married within weeks of that birth, her baptism certificate also has her as Lucy Moppett. In later documents however, she takes her mother’s new husband’s surname and becomes known as Lucy Hide. John Hide (Lucy’s presumed father) is named as her father on the above marriage certificate
The couple produced
John Thomas bapt Rottingdean 17 May 1863 Address 1881 4 Black Rock Cottages
Joseph Richard bapt Rottingdean 1865 (M 1883?) Address 1881 4 Black Rock Cottages

John above (born Rottingdean 1863) married twice.
His first wife was Emily Eason (m Rottingdean June ¼ 1885)
Emily was born circa 1862 and bapt St Nicholas, Brighton Sept 1862
It is believed she was the daughter of William & Susan Eason. She died in 1889)
The couple produced Percy’s half brothers and sister
Arthur born c1885 Brighton
Daisy born c1886 Brighton
Joseph Charles born c1890 Brighton (b March ¼ 1889?)
John’s second wife who he married in Brighton (June ¼ 1893) was Frances (Fanny) Harriett Vine of Brighton, born circa 1864 and baptised August 1865.
She was the daughter of Edwin & Mary of 11 Black Rock Cottages, Rottingdean (1881)
The couple produced Percy on 29 December 1893

This looks like your family on the 1841 census; address, Black Rock Rottingdean
John Landers age 30 AG Labourer born in county
Sarah age 30 -----------------
Thomas age 7
Joseph age 5
Richard 3

This name was mis-transcribed as Lounders

Thank you Roy, I guessed they must do, it's not that far - as the crow flies!

Hi Kerryb,
Must have been too late at night for me the other day - Angelina was born in Bury St Edmunds SUFFOLK!
In 1901 she was living with some of the Landers Children at ! Black Rock Cottage, Rottingdean. RG13/919 Folio 87 page 9
Angelina Hutchison Head Wid 49 Hotel Manager retired Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, ENG
Mary Jane Lander Dau S 35 Housekeeper Domestic Rottingdean, Sussex, ENG
Alice B Lander dau S 22 School teacher Rottingdean, Sussex, ENG
Walter Lander Son 19 Builders Clerk Rottingdean, Sussex, ENG
It's interesting she's using her married name but claiming the Landers children as son & daughters!

Hi scrapppyshaz
It looks like David's wife died quite early on perhaps she and David were 'together' for a while and perhaps she describes herself as widow because of his death not her husbands!!
Kerry ;D

Angelina was in London with her husband Richard in 1881 giving her birthplace as Mildenhall, Suffolk. She had downsised her age by about 4 years. RG11 /0055 / 88 / 47.
Presumably any relationship with David or his family must have been after that date and none of the children could have been hers.
David (b 23 Feb 1840 Rottingdean)
Married Harriet Thorpe of Eastdean June ¼ 1860 (Harriet died aged 42, June ¼ 1883)

It went before I could finish so I continue......
As his wife died in 1883, the 1891 census should be revealing.
Can someone look it up.
Roy G

The 1901 has David Lander on it, so he was still alive then, but not recorded with his family. Do you think he was working the night shift at the gas works and although the children were in the care of their elder sister in their father's house, the enumerator's record has led you to believe Angelina was acting as their mother in his absence?
Roy G

Roy
1891 is the one I looked up right back at the top of this message. ;D ;D
But Angelina is not there, presumably still with her husband?

Kerry

Sorry Roy
Where is David in 1901, I can't find him at all??
Kerry
-
Cant tell you exactly where David was because that would mean I had to purchase a 1901 certificate.
The 1901 index however, gives the following.
David Lander
age 61 Sussex
Rollingdean Sussex
Rottingdean
Yard Foreman
You may not have been able to fid it because the transcript calls his place of origin as Rollingdean
Roy

By the way.
Black Rock Cottages where the Landers hung out for some 60 years, was a curiosity. It was actually on the outskirts of the Kemp Town district of Brighton, but officially came within the parish boundary of Rottingdean several miles away. That probably explained why I could never find the cottages on the 1851 census. The Brighton enumerator probably left them for the Rottingdean enumerator to do, and vice versa
Anyway, there is a painting (circa 1820) by Constable showing ships anchored off there unloading coal, probably for the gas works. By the turn of the century, a large gasometer dominated the site and the cottages had been engulfed into Rifle Butt Road. Presumably David Lander's work had something to do with the yard round the gasometer.
Have a look at Rifle Butt Road on the My Brighton & Hove website. There are some pictures and supporting text.

Hi Roy G,
Thanks for the extra info - I didn't even look for David in 1901 as he wasn't at home - still doesn't find Angelina in 1891 tho - she's the one I'm still looking for. I wonder if she was managing a hotel -she calls herself retired hotel manager in 1901,

Hi Scrappyshaz
I tried doing some more searches on her yesterday under Hutchinson, Burford and Lander in Suffolk and Sussex and still nothing. Hmmmm
Kerry
-
Try Hutchison without the "N"
Roy
-
I think I tried that, I did every variation I could think of and of Lander!
Kerry ;D
-
Well thanks for trying Kerryb,
I don't think she wanted to be found that year! :'(
Scrappyshaz
-
Did you try looking for her husband to see if he "died" before or after that Census?
Roy G
-
Hi Roy G,
Angelina's husband didn't die - in fact I was surprised to find her alive in 1901 as in 1891 Richard J Hutchinson was living with his parents in Peckham, Camberwell as a widower! In 1901 he is with his widowed mother in Sydenham, Lewisham & he's single!
Obviously they separated after the 1881 census - I haven't found any children & that makes it a bit harder to find Angelina. She just disappeared in 1891. (Mind you her mother did the same thing & popped up as another man's wife in a later census!!) :o :o
Scrappyshaz
-
I think you were right suggesting that Angelina "invented" being a widow, for a man with an identical name and background to her late husband, Richard J Huchison, still appears on the 1901 census.
1901 census index lists Richard J Hutchison age 45
born Kent W Brompton
living London Lewisham
Wine & Sprit Manager.
I have already noted from their marriage cert that RIchard's middle name was James.
Looking at the findings, the Black Rock census of 1901 suggests that Angelina was more a lodger than a lover, bringing us right back to your original question, "Were the Hutchisons still together in 1891 or living independantly?"
Roy G
Post script
While you were typing your message, I was typing the above. It looks as though there is some sort of telepathy between us.
Have you tried the much broader search in the 1891 of looking for all the 34-37 year old Angelina's born in Suffolk living in London or the Brighton area?
Roy

Re searching under the first name only born in Suffolk around 1851.
The 1881 shows 11 girls that conform to that criterion,
I have no access to the 1891,
and the 1901 will not search just using that format.
Stepping outside the Sussex / London boundary for the moment, presumably you have the following.
James Burford married Mary Ann Cross in Bury St Edmonds district Sept 1/4 1840
Children
James Burford b Dec 1/4 1841
Thomas Harry Burford b Dec 1/4 1843
Arthur Cross Burford b June 1/4 1845 (appears on 1881 as a widower with 7 children)
Angelina Cross Burford b Mar 1/4 1851
Emma Cross Burford b Dec 1/4 1856

Hi Roy G,
I don't have access to the census at present - used my free trial at ancestry to look up as much as I could ;)
The Burford family are the ones I'm interested in, although they are a side line - I'm descended from Mary Ann Cross's brother.
Will have to give up on Angelina for the time being - however they are certainly an interesting family :D

Just tried a search on first name as Roy suggested but came up with no matches at all! :-\
