Hi
I'm looking for the marriage of Robert Connett of Honiton (born c1811, father Henry) to Mary of Awliscombe (born c1817). First child Elizabeth was born 14th Apr 1839.
I have looked at all marriage sheets from 1837 to 1840 and had a search done by the DFHS for marriages pre-1837 with no luck.
Has anyone any ideas?

Hi Hill
Have you found this family in any of the census yet...sometimes we are lucky enough, when finding our people, that there are in-laws/cousins etc living with them , that may provide clues.
Where was Elizabeth (their child ) born , also Honiton?

Hi Deb
Yes I have all the census.
The 1851 (HO107-1863) shows:
Living in house in Wolson Village, Awliscombe -
Robert Connett,Head,Married,40,Farm Labourer, Devon Honiton
Mary Connett,Wife,Married,33,Farm Labourer,Devon Awliscombe
Elizabeth Connett,Daughter,Unmarried,12,Lives at home,Devon Awliscombe
Sarah Connett,Daughter,Unmarried,9,Scholar,Devon Awliscombe
William Connett,Son,8,Scholar,Devon Awliscombe
George Connett,Son,5,Scholar,Devon Awliscombe
Charles Connett,Son,3,Devon Awliscombe
Ann Connett,Daughter,5 months,Devon Awliscombe
Subsequent census are pretty much the same, never really moving out of the area. Just more children! He ended up the the Union House in Honiton in 1899 where he died.
I have also searched for his birth and marriage under the name of Cunnett as well as Connett, to no avail.

Hi Stewart
This is the only marriage I can find .... I am sure you have seen it too
Robert CONNETT dec 1841 Newton Abbot
only Mary's on the same page are :
Mary Ann Dart
Mary Ann Williams
I see on the 1871 census that Mary is Mary A Connett..... Maybe one of the above Mary Ann's ?? Date of the marriage just a little too late as Elizabeth born 1839 :-\
How did you find out that Robert's father was 'Henry' ?
will check further

Hi Deb
Good spot.
Mary actually died 12th Feb 1885 and Robert re-married to Jane Webber 20th Dec 1887. On this marriage certificate he quoted his father's name as Henry Connett. This marriage also took place in Awliscombe, so he hadn't gone any where.

Hi Stewart
Just a quick question .... you have Elizabeth as being born 14 apr 1839 ... Do you have her birth cert? This would at least give you her mum's maiden name!

:)
there is this extracted marriage on IGI:
Henry Cunnett = Betty Row
10 Aug 1802 Honiton on Otter
there is an Mary Ann Connett chr. 5 Jan 1803 Honiton on Otter (IGI extr)
parents: Henry Connett and Betty
Mary ann was buried 9 April 1803 (IGI extracted)
a few other children are listed as being born in this area but to Henry Connett and Elizabeth ... am not sure if this Elizabeth is the same person as Betty !
If the above Henry Cunnett=Betty Row are the parents of your Robert Connett , why would they register their daughter but not Robert ... :-\

Totally agree with you re Henry and Betty. I had spotted this one but need to prove it was the right Henry.
I haven't got Elizabeth's b/c as I don't know her maiden name.
Many thanks

Hi
Stewart ..I am confused :-\...Elizabeth Connett, the daughter of Robert Connett ( b c 1811 Honiton) and Mary ?( b c 1818 Awliscombe), you said was born 14 April 1839 .... where did you get her date of birth?

Deb
I have a list of Devon baptisms supplied by the Devon FHS and Elizabeth is on that list with that date and from Awliscombe with parents Robert and Mary.
Now here's a thought. There is also a James mentioned with parents of Robert and Mary, baptised 25th Jun 1837 in Awliscombe. He's not in the 1851 Census so presume he died. Also a Betsy born 19th Apr 1835 also not in the 1851 Census. That could put the marriage back before 1835 when Mary would only have been 18.

Hi Stewart
Okay .... we have Robert Connett bc 1811 = Mary ?? b c 1817 Awliscombe .....
We don't know Mary's maiden name and can't find a marriage anywhere for them ... I know it may cost a little but this couple had lots of children...as you said, after the 1851 census , they stayed in the area and had lots more children ...
This is my idea ... which of their children has the most UNUSUAL name out of them all ... then lets search for that child's birth registration ... we will find the vol and page # and then you HAVE to order the cert to find Mary's maiden name ...
You have already listed chidren they had up until the 1851 census ... last child ...Ann Connett , 5 months, awliscombe ...can you just finish off the list after that .....
we have to be able to find her maiden name by the beirth cert of at least ONE of her children ...
deb ;D

Hi Deb
Yes I agree that getting a birth certificate might help and in fact I'm waiting for William Connett of c1842 to be delivered.
My next bet is Charles Connett of c1848. Unfortunately no unusual christian names.
I'll see what arrives.
