Title: BAALHAM Family of Polstead Suffolk?
Post by: Bamba on Saturday 04 August 07 03:45 BST (UK)
Has anyone done any research - or know anything about - the Baalhams of Polstead Suffolk?

I have a Maria Baalham in my husband's tree who was a Gt Gt Grandmother and who was born in Polstead.  There were a small number of people by this name all settled in Polstead and looking at a road map I found that this appears to be a small village? not too far from Harwich and wondered if the name could be Dutch - or even Belgian.

There appears to be no trace of Baalhams on the LDS website before 1759 and I wondered if there was any particular reason why such a group should move to England at that time or whether it could be hardship in general.

I would be grateful to hear anything about this family if anyone else has done research.

Thanks

Bamba

Looking through Boyds marriage index, the name Balaam and variants, goes back to the 1500 and 1600s. The marriages listed there are predominantly in Suffolk.

The Suffolk Burials Index has a fair number of entries for 'Baalham' in various places. In Polstead there are entries covering the period 1754 to 1807.

EDIT: There are far more entries for 'Balaam' so I guess this is/was the 'correct' spelling.

Thank you to both respondents - I will look at the suggested websites.  It is great to get such a quick response to a name that has been puzzling me for some time.

Thanks

British Origins is a pay per view site. They do 72hours, monthly or yearly. So you would need to take out one of these subscriptions, to view the info they hold.

When I was working in school in Bury St Edmunds there were a number of students from Balaam/Baalham/Baalam families - as far as I know it is an old Suffolk name, found all over West Suffolk - just spelled in more ways than one, usually pronounced as 'Baylem'.

I have paid for a 72 hour sub just to see how I  get on with it - but I cannot get in as I need a membership number for Origins - so I keep going round in circles as it says I am registered but I cannot get to a search site only my details!

I have sent a message to see what that brings up.

Thanks anyway to both repliers.

I have never had any problems. When on the log in page, you usually just put in your email address and your chosen password.

Hi Bamba

I am completely mystified as to why you can't log in. On the main page, you see login on the left hand side. When clicking on this, you put in the email address that you registered with and your password.
This should take you to your page, which will show your personal details. From here you can do your searches.

Anyway you sould be entitled to a refund,if you haven't been able to use your sub, for whatever reason.

I find it a very user friendly site.

Just out if interest, are you trying to access through Internet Explorer or some other browser. I do have trouble with the site if I try to access through Mozilla Firefox.

Welcome to Rootschat Red Wine (hope it's a full delicious plum-y Merlot  ;D

Came through bits of Polstead on my way home yesterday, the bits that are nearest to Boxford - Polstead is one of those Suffolk villages which is very scattered.

Have you and Bamba checked out the church of St Mary, very famous around these parts for its unusual roof.  I was there a little while ago taking photographs of a memorial in the churchyard for a researcher in Aus.

Thanks for passing on that website - I have printed the details off and will have a good read of them.  I am now on the other side of the world so it is good to be able to see something of where our ancestors came from.

My tree includes that murder too, my 2XgT Grandmother's neice.
For the lady who was asking about the Ballhams, have you tried the Cosford database? http://www.cosford-database.co.uk/

A visit to St Mary's is well worth the effort. The view is amazing. Anyone know if there are any cemetery records as the grave stones are so hard to read now.

Hi
i have a small connection with had Baalham family. My 2x great Grandfather Robert Lockwood was a lime burner and lived in Needham market suffolk. His son William was my greatgrandfather and so the Lockwood name is my main research. However there was also a daughter Charlotte and she married John Baalham in 1871. I can give you more info on that family if it is any interest to you.
regards Janet

I have not come across Charlotte Lockwood in my research.  I would be interested to know more about this marriage.

The closest John Baalham I have in my tree was born in 1760 in Polstead but that would not fit with the marriage date and his wife in any case was Susan Watson.

Thanks for your interest

there is not a great deal I can tell you except Charlotte was the eldest child of Robert Lockwood and Mary Ann Pilbrough. She was born in Needham market suffolk 6th Feb 1848. She married John Baalham in 1871. In 1881 census they lived in Creeting Green with five young children. 1891 they lived in Stow Road Old Newton with still 4 children still at home. 1901 Charlotte had become a widow and was a house keeper for Maria Haywood also a widow.
John Baalham was born 1846 son of William Baalham and Margaret. John was an ag lab and born in creeting st james.
John and Charlotte had Walter 1872
William John 1873
Henry Alfred 1876
Anna 1879
Ernest 1881 and Emily 1885. John died 1898.

My gr grandmother's sister married Frederick Balaam who was born in Sapiston, Suffolk abt 1857.  They moved to Methwold, where he was an innkeeper (the Swan Inn) from 1891 to 1929.

There are quite a few people researching the Balaams on Genes Reunited.

Thanks for your replies

I think they must be a totaly different branch as most of our Baalhams were born in Polstead Suffolk - I will look how close that is to Needham Market.  Actually Needham is our surname so that is very interesting too.

To Subaru - I have not yet found any connection with Balaams to Baalham but will keep an open mind about that as it might ome to light later.

Hi Janet,

You don't happen to know anything about James Baalham b.1804 Polstead (Parents John Baalham b. 1760 & Susan Watson) that was married to Sarah Carter in Polstead in Nov 1828. Sarah Carter was my gx2 Aunt. Desperately looking for living family connections. Robert Carter (my gx2 grandfather) was Sarahs brother, he was transported to NSW Australia in 1825.
