I can find the marriage of my mother's second cousin,
4th quarter 1939, Gainsboro, 7a 3053, but when I search for her husband, a Mr Smith, there is no matching entry. Does this happen often? I've searched Ancestry and Findmypast.
I only want to know his Christian name out of interest so if I can't find it, I will just record him as Mr Smith, unless someone can find out who he was. Otherwise, is there a site somewhere recording marriages in Gainsborough?

It's very difficult without knowing who Mrs SMITH was. ???

I don't want to give her name as she is still alive age 98, and has a living daughter and niece, but if you look at the reference you will see what she is called. I have since searched all the Smiths in the appropriate quarter and there are none that match her maiden name.
I just wondered if this often happened with registrations in 1939, although all the others I have checked out of my parents and all my father's siblings were easily cross referenced.
I could write and ask her, but I think I have already asked her enough questions about her mother and grandfather, ie my mother's cousin and uncle and it is not important enough to bother her again.

On the page you mention, I find a
Ronald W BARLEY to Marjorie SMITH
and another which I have PM'ed to you (it matches with a birth in 1908 :) )

Geoff, I've replied to your pm which gave the correct couple.
Many thanks again.
