Hi
Is there anyone out there who knows anything about the family Murchie/McMurchie who originally came from Ayr.
The family I am interested in are David Murchie born in 1801 in Ayr and Janet Marshall born in 1820 in Ayr.
This couple moved for whatever reason to the Isle of Man where they were married in 1837. They had many children, Robert, James, Jane, Eleanor, Thomas, Mary, David who died young, another David, William, Janette and Agnes - there may have been more!! The reason of my interest is that I think one of the Murchie girls married my husband's great grandfather William Joseph Moore as it would appear that his son, also a William Joseph Moore was staying with his grandmother Janet Murchie in the 1891 Isle of Man census. I know this is a long shot but I am getting desperate - I can trace the younger William Joseph Moore's death in Bolton and his marriage to Margaret Jane Ellison in the Isle of Man, but I cannot trace his birth place. Thanks for anyone's help in solving this puzzle.

Hi Lindy! I know this is a late reply, and it may be way off base, but I think I may have some ancestors named Murchie, Murchison, and Murphy--apparently the name began (originally Anglicized) as McMurchie. (It gets very confusing, esp. since I am not familiar with the Gaelic languages, in spite of my username!)
Anyway--what I do know for a fact is that back in the 1700's, a group of families (names including Kelso, Kerr, Robinson, McAllister, Henry/Hendry, and your MURPHY) left the Isle of Arran to move to the US. (This particular group called themselves "The Men of Arran" and I think most of them were of Kilmory parish, in the southern part of Arran.)
I do know that I am a direct descendant of the Henry family in that group--the name I believe was originally "Hendry" but soon after arriving on a ship called the "Diana" at Wilmington, North Carolina, they dropped the "d" and simply called themselves the Henry family.
Anyway, I just thought if you're looking for forebears with the name of Murchie/McMurchie, you might just try the Isle of Arran. I know for certain that "our" Scottish Murchies/Murphys came from there!
Hope this helps at least a little! ;D
