Title: Invite - Gorton Monastery
Post by: uk2003 on Monday 03 September 07 14:14 BST (UK)
Recieved this email from Gorton Monastery if anybody fancies a look.

If any of your chat room contacts want to visit the Monastery next week we are opening  to the public for 4 days from Thursday 6th until Sunday 9th as part of the Heritage Open Days. We are also going to trial our new Friars Pantry Cafe  which will also be open serving delicious food from 10am until 4pm each day.
It would be lovely to welcome anyone who is in the area even though Tony won't be available to do one of his fantastic tours.
Regards
Ken

Hi Ken,
Thanks for posting that. The weekend was a great success but unfortunately i wasn't here for it. I'm now back and would like to suggest a mini-meet at the Monastery as I know you and others have expressed an interest. I would be delighted if you could be my guests for an afternoon.

I think a Saturday afternoon would be best as it would give an opportunity for people in Gtr Manchester and perhaps further afield to join. The tour lasts about an hour and a quarter and covers the architectural, religious and social significance of the Monastery - no doubt this one will take longer as Rootschatters grill me on the accuracy of my 'family' research :D :D

Can i start the ball rolling by suggesting 6th October at 2.00 pm and see what interest there is. (A back up date would be 20th October)

Best wishes
Tony

I do remember,  with great affection,  going to St. Joseph's,  for the funeral of one of my grammar school teachers, prob. 1948/50.  I cannot express my pleasure that the wonderful building and artefacts have been saved.  My thanks,  as a simple indvidual, for  the hard work put in,  to preserve this  masterpiece for the people of Greater Manchester.

Hi Migky,
Would be delighted to see you both again. There is at least one other person at the moment so I am going to go ahead with the 6th, but quite happy to arrange another date for those who might want to come later.

Hi Annie and Cathaldus, thanks for those thoughts, I do hope you can get here one day.

Cheers
Tony

Hi Tony
I haven't looked at the boards recently so I hadn't noticed this.  I am very interested in taking a tour of the monastry so if another  date is available, I am usually very flexible (but can't make the 6th October)

Thanks Migs -  I am already aware of the Victoria baths -- I too leanrt to swim there as a child.  I have been on one of the guided tours of the place and also recommend it.  Did you watch Life on Mars?  A lot of the filming was done on location there

Hi Tony, thank you for a brilliant afternoon. Me and Ann had a great time and could not believe how much work had been done in the last 12months. You have worked so hard on the project and the people of Gorton must be so proud to have there monastery back even if it will no longer be use as a place of worship but the building will now benefit the comunity once again. here are one or two of the pictures i took , the first couple are from last year.

At the bottom of this picture you can just see Tony, kenhar and kens wife

Hi everybody,
What can i say, I had the most fabulous afternoon on Saturday :) It's just a shame the partners brought their fellas with them ;D

But honestly, KenHar and Migky, you are absolutely beautiful people, and I'm sure all the people who have received your help on this site would echo that.

But Migky, why did you doctor the 3 Amigoes picture to give me grey hair :o Anyone could tell you were the better looking without doing that ;D ;D ;D

Hope to see you back as regular visitors whenever you are out and about Rootschatting in the area

Hi Annie, you were sorely missed in that tour, but present in our thoughts. And the candle burned strongly all day, today :)

lol

Hi Sallysmum,
You won't need a computer or abacus despite what the other two say :D in order to understand the story of Gorton Monastery you need to be able to count to 12, and well with only eight fingers and two thumbs poor old Migky was struggling a bit ;D ;D

And KarenM, wise smileys ;D

Best wishes

I have just returned from my visit to the Monastery, or as it was pointed out, more accurately the Friary and I strongly recommend a visit.  It was fascinating and Tony was very knowledgable.  I would also like to thank Tony again for spending a little extra time with me after the end of the tour filling me in on various snippets.  Wonderful.

Oh and Migs -- abacus? nah it's a simple 3 4 5 rule!

Hi Annie, the monastery had an open day to day so went over for a short while. Tony looked very busy and rushed of his feet ( shirt, tie and name badge on so must be important today  :o ) The weather was really bad and you would have thought it would have put people off from comming, but didn't. The place full to the brim ;D Only got a few pictutres.

Wonderful pictures, Migky :)
Sorry I could only spare you a few minutes, but we were fantastically busy, we reckon about 2500 visitors with peak of 750 for the carol service, but I think you may have gone by then. The weather was appalling and whilst we had erected a gazebo outside for the donkey, she was spooked by the wind flapping over it. The sanctuary who had lent us the donkey for our nativity scene, asked could they bring her inside :o :o :o :o What bring a donkey into our Grade 2* listed building on which we have just spent £6.5 million???
The answer was obvious, as St Francis was a friend of all animals, Yes, but just make sure you've got some large bin bags ::) ::) ::) She was ever so well behaved until the carols, and then she joined in with Oh Come All ye Faithful etc, and added a rather rich, but off tempo baritone to the proceedings.

We catered superbly and accurately apart from the mulled wine, everything else was more or less spot on, but we over catered for the mulled wine by about 2 gallons. So don't expect much sense out of me tonite ;D ;D ;D We could do with a 'merry' smiley ;D

As I'm posting I notice that Annie has joined the thread. Annie, we had a large Christmas tree, lit but undecorated, and asked people to record their wishes on candle shape tags and decorate the tree. I put one there for you, for a very special person who won't be there this Christmas in person, but I'm sure will be there in spirit in many people's lives :)

Now where did I put that mulled wine 8)

LOL

Oh, and Sallysmum sorry I didn't thank you for previous post
