I have a marriage date for Frank Mason b. abt 1877 and Mary Brown b. abt. 1976 of 2nd Qtr 1899 in Leicester.
To establish Mary's maiden name would I need the marriage certificate or are there any possible lookups for 1899? (either online or record offices)
I have ancestors of Frank but not Mary.
Help would be appreciated.
-
have I missed something here? Surely Brown is Mary's maiden name?
-
I'm an idiot!!
I was trying to establish her farther's/mother's christian names to try and find Mary Brown in an earlier census. Brown is such a common name. I assume I need the marriage cert. I just wondered whether marriage records were at the records office or say online.
Is the cert the only place to see where the marriage took place?, who her parents were?
Genealogy confuses me and I type different things to what I am thinking. Maybe it's just age!
Thanks

Join the club! I think we all do that sort of thing!
I think you will have to buy the cert. With a name like Mary Brown there is really no relistic hope of finding the right one with her parents in earlier censuses. At least if you get the cert it will confirm her father's name, which will help. You might also find other info useful for confirming her on a census - e.g the address she gives on the marriage cert, or the witnesses on the cert may be siblings, for example.
-
do you have them on the 1901 census?
this should give her year and place of birth which may help narrow it down.
Mike or Rachel of Leicester have looked up marriages for me at St Margarets Church, Leicester which have been a great help and also burials at Welford Road, hopefully one of them will pick this up.
-
They are on 1901 Census living on Harold Street, Aylestone, Leicester, with my gran as a 1 year old.
Frank Mason was listed as 23 and Mary as 24 years old.
Prior to his marriage Frank lived in 1881 in Durham St. All Saints, Leicester with his parents.
I could only see him as a 16 year old in 1891 as a possible lodger???
I only picked Brown up from Freebmd marriage 1895-1900 - as 2nd Qtr 1899 7a/377
-
Just resurrecting this query !!!
Frank Mason I have a marriage date for Frank Mason b. abt 1877 and Mary Brown b. abt. 1976 of 2nd Qtr 1899 in Leicester.
Frank's father was Alfred and his mother Mary Ann.
To establish Mary's parent's names I assume I need the marriage certificate, or are there any possible lookups for 1899? (either online or record offices)
His parents and many of family were married in St. Margaret's, Leicester, but maybe 1899 is a bit late.
I will order a marriage certificate tonight, but before that I wondered whether anyone has access to any marriage records for 1899.
Any help in identifying Mary Brown would be appreciated.
-
I'm a little impatient waiting for certificate with Xmas approaching.
The only Mary Brown I can see in 1881 that fits the bill is:
78 Willow St. St. Margaret's, Leicester
William Brown 42
Hannah Brown, Wife 44
Alice Brown, 13
Louisa Brown, 10
Ernest Brown, 9
Mary Ann Brown, 4
Can anyone throw any light on a marriage in Apr-Jun 1899 for this Mary Brown to Frank Mason, a lodger in Durham St., Leicester 1881.
Or:
Can anyone see where she lived in 1891?
Regards

There isn't a Frank Mason getting married at St Margaret's but the list only goes up to 1897. Have checked the Welford Road burials and there are 3 Frank Mason's but all would be of the wrong age
Mason Frank 1876 AUG 22 4Mths Lower Charles Street
Mason Frank 1906 OCT 6 21 38 Mount Road
Mason Frank 1928 APR 20 22 N.E.I. / 96 Lansdowne Road

Thanks Willsy.
I know Frank had 3 daughters B. 1901-14. I wonder if he had the son you show burial for in 1928.
Lansdown Road is round the corner to his house in 1901 onwards. I will do some checking.
Incidentally, what is N.E.I in address?
Can anyone see info on Brown family in 1891 and 1901, in Willow St., in 1881?
Thanks

N.E.I is North Evington Infirmary, in the same grave

The MODE of burial indicates whether the plot has been purchased at that time (F = freehold) or not (C = common), the others are probably unrelated looking at the time span

Hi
I now have marriage certificate of Frank Mason and Mary Brown showing marriage at St. James, Aylestone Park, Leicester in April 1899. Both Mary and Frank lived in Boundary Road, near Gas Works. Mary's age is 22 so born say 1877. Father given as Edward Brown, Labourer.
In 1881 census the only match is:
Edward Brown 40, Labourer, Claybrook
Sarah Brown 36, Factory Hand, Lutterworth
John Brown, 14, Factory Hand, Claybrook
Edward Brown 9, Leicester
Mary Brown 4, Ibstock.
Only problem is Mary is in later censuses after marriage as born in Leicester.
Can anyone see this family in earlier census records, or indeed see another match for Mary with Edward as father.
Many thanks

Thanks Jamago
Do you have an address for 1891?
In 1901 after marriage they lived in Aylestone Park and had Leicester as birth place. I assume hubby considered Ibstock as Leicester!
I certainly can't see any other matches. The only Mary Brown with matching age in Aylestone in 1881 had father Eli, not Edward.
Could someone check earlier census to try and get back a generation.
Regards

Many thanks Wozzle.
I hope I am chasing the right family!
Info I have:
1. 1901 Census Mary Mason (nee Brown), 24, b. Leicester
2. Marriage Cert Apr 1899 age 22, father Edward Brown
Only Mary b 1877 +/- 2 years with father Edward is family I am looking for above but birth place as Ibstock.
There is another Mary b.1874 in 1881 census with father Edward born in Leicester.
How can I be certain of correct family?
Is it normal for say Ibstock to later be put as Leicester?
Any suggestions

That's great Mike, yet again you have come up trumps.
I was so worried that I was chasing the wrong Brown family, but your 1901 address of Duncan Road, for Edward born Claybrook has put my mind at rest. I was born at my Gran's house in Duncan Road.
The other information will save me a hard slog through church records.
Again thanks for your efforts on my behalf.
