Stump of the Castle seems to be a townland about 2 km from Rathdrum. If you Google 'stump of the castle & rathdrum' lots of entries come up.
P.S. see www.thecore.com/seanruad to search for the names of townlands, parishes, etc. in Ireland

Hi there thankyou so much for the information i just didn't know where to start thanks again DMD

Can understand why- Stump of the Castle doesn't sound like a real place. Spent a week in Co. Wicklow a number of years ago around Rathdrum and it was lovely but lots of wee winding roads.

Hi there again been on the site for Rathdrum it does look a quaint little place i a going to Ireland next year researching my family i hope to visit Rathdrum if i get enough spare time thanks for all your help DMD

Avondale House former home of Charles Stewart Parnell is just outside Rathdrum and there are acres of woodland on the estate- a fantastic place to spend a few hours. If you have children with you there is (at least it was there about 10 years ago) a maze in the area but at the moment I can't remember it's name.

Hi,
Stump of the castle is just, what we call a "townland" and currently has only 10 houses in it. some of these 3/4 of these are only recently built (last 20 years or so). The townland gets its name from the ruin of a castle which is in the vicinity and has a historical connection to other castles in Wicklow
I don't know if you have looked at the national archives census returns for 1901 and 1911, it gives details of every house and their occupants.
Do you mind if I ask what your great grand parants surname was?
by the way, this area is now on Google street view, so you can have a look.

Hi many thanks for your reply it sounds a lovely place .I will have a look on the google map .My great grandfather was Peter Kavanagh and he married Julia Doyle in Rathdrum Church in 1870 he was a labourer and she was a servant .They came to England just after they were married as their first son was born in Cumberland England in 1873 .thanks again dmd

Hi,
I have been doing a bit of digging for you, in 1901, there were only three houses in stump of the castle. my house was built around that time so is not listed. None of the families that lived there were Kavanagh's or Doyle's. However, in 1911, there was 7 houses, with the 4th (next to mine) having a family name of Doyle. All these houses would have been labourers houses beside a forest. most, except 1 have since been renovated. Doyle is a common name in the area, but there is every reason that they would have been related. Good luck with the search

Hi thankyou so much for your information fantastic ,i have a picture in my mind now i would guess they could have lived in one of those little houses for labourers thankyou once again for your help dmd

I was very interested to read the information on Stump of the Castle, near Rathdrum. My ancestors lived there in the 1850s. Records also show them in "Stump Little" in the 1830's. Does anyone know if this could be the same place?
