Hi Sally,
This is your family in the 1891 Census.

27 Windy Wynd, St Nicholas, Aberdeen

Thomas Brechin, 30yrs, Coal Carter, born berdeen.
Elspeth Brechin, 28yrs, born Old Meldrum.
George Brechin, 8mths, Aberdeen..

I see that your Thomas Brechin married Elpeth in 1888.
his parents are Thomas Brechin (housepainter) and Margaret Durno ........now married to John Duncan.

Margaret Durno (38yrs) married John Duncan( widower) 29 4 1879 Edinburgh...
In the
1881 Census
64 Bristo St, St Giles, Edinburgh.
John Duncan 41yrs, Draper shop assistant, born Edinburgh.
Margaret Duncan 40yrs, born Lossiemouth, Morayshire.
john 13
Isabella 10
Susan 10
Maragret Duncan   1yr Edinburgh.

1891 Census.
43 Mill Hill, Inveresk, Midlothian.
John Duncan 51yrs, Army Pensioner Church Officer, born Edinburgh.
Margaret Duncan, 54yrs, School cleaner, born Loussiemouth, Elginshire.
Margaret Duncan,  11yrs, Midlothian.

So your Thomas Brechin.....had a little sister called Margaret Duncan...and his mother (Margaret Durno) was born Lossiemouth Morayshire..

In the 1871 Census
5 Brown St, Edinburgh.
Margaret Durno 36yrs, Dom Ser, born Lossiematt, Morayshire.
she was lodging with the Sutherland family.

Now your Margaret Durno's family.
her parents James Durno married Margaret Grant 20 5 1832, Banff.
children.

Georgina 1832 Banff
Helen 1834 Banff
Margaret born 13 9 1836....C..23 9 1836 Drainie, Morayshire.
Ann 1838 St Nicholas
James 1841 "
Hugh 1843  "
William 1850 "

1851 Census
Smith Otto Netherkirkgate no 16
Aberdeen
James Durno, 41 yrs, born Drainie Elgin.
Margaret 40 Turriff, Banff.
Margaret 15 Drainie.
James 9 Aberdeen.
Hugh 8 Aberdeen.

In the
1871 Census
Margaret Durno 67yrs, Lodging House Keeper....... living at
5 Red Liose Court, St Nicholas, Aberdeen.
Living there also........according to Ancestry......
is a Thomas Dall 8yrs, grandson..( but they have him to another family) I worked out that if you go line by line ...
Thomas is on line 10 and Margaret is on line 4...with lodgers under her.....so I think that Thomas dall will b your Thomas Durno/Brechin.....
I too can't find a birth for him.....
He should be Thomas Durno ....[or Durno / Brechin] illegitimate and registered to Margaret Durno..... born about 1862/ 1865. Aberdeen or Edinburgh..
I think there has been a big transcription error when registered....
Margaret Durno/Grant died 1877 St Nicholas, aged 67yrs.

Hi Kenjo,

Good research there.

Probably just a coincidence but I was interested to see Elspeth was from Old Meldrum where my "Brechins" lived, perhaps there is a link with Thomas visiting cousins there and meeting his wife. What was Elspeth's surname?

Thanks Grothenwell

In my own notes I have Elspit Crighton wife of Thomas Brechin - mar 20 Jul 1888. Her parents at time of marriage were William Crighton, farm-servant, dec., and Jane Crighton ms Thomson.
