Here is the provisional programme for the Glasgow meet.
Because I don't know the final numbers coming, the programme has been built on the basis that anywhere we go to needs quite a bit of elbow room.
I have also worked on the basis that rootschatters want to chat in real (rather than virtual) space with their colleagues, and the programme should provide a background social historical context for that to happen.
You will want to eat and drink, so access to cafes etc has been important; however if you want to bring a thermos and packed lunch, be my guest.
And finally, I was conscious that we needed something that would not (a) leave us too exposed to the weather should it rain, and (b) get us tied up with the flow of people going to watch Scotland v Ukraine soccer at hampden Park at 3pm the same day. All blame about the programme should be directed at me!
Saturday 13 October
1030 - 1300 - The People's Palace and Winter Gardens, Glasgow Green
The People's Palace is a fantastic "museum" displaying the social history of Glasgow from the 1750 to the present day. It is aptly named. Behind it is the Winter Gardens where there is a nice cafe as well as the sorts of exotic greenery you get in winter gardens. It is set in Historic Glasgow Green which is worth exploring too if you have time/the inclination.
There is no exact starting time - I just ask you to find me or another willing volunteer in the Winter gardens cafe - I'll be wearing my Rootschat badge, which I suggest you do too - http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,104049.msg411757.html#msg411757.
You will however be expected to have fed and watered yourself before we leave at 1300 hrs.
NB I will post more information on how to get to Glasgow Green separately.
1300 -1330 Walk to Provands Lordship, Castle Street
The oldest house in Glasgow, built in 1472, and restored to give a flavour of medieval life in Glasgow.
(There is an alternative attraction over the road - St Mungo museum of religious life and art; the cafe is based there)
1415-1430 Walk to Buchanan Street subway station
1430-1445 Subway to Hillhead
1445-1500 Walk to Glasgow University for the Hunterian Museum, University Avenue
The Hunterian provides a range of the things you expect in museums, including the Kelvin and Hunter displays. Close by is also the Mackintosh House (£3, £2 concessions) and the Hunterian Art Gallery (free). There's a cafe in the Art Gallery and also at the nearby University Visitor Centre
1700 End of the "official" programme for the day
Especially those staying over will want to reconvene - more to follow on this.
Sunday 14 October
1030-1230 Glasgow Necropolis, Castle Street
This is an optional extra for those staying over, and will be subject to the weather.

I will be sending a PM to all those who expressed an interest in attending, so that you can confirm whether you are coming or not - by Friday 5th October, please. I need to know who to look out for!
If you've just chanced by this thread, and fancy coming, please do not just turn up, send me a PM to let me know you plan to come.
The advice about staying over and orienting yourself to Glasgow - travel, vernacular (!) etc is here: http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,232013.msg1238707.html#msg1238707 and still stands good.
I hope this is helpful. I'm looking forward to it, and I hope you are too.

Rootschatters meet – Glasgow 13/14 October
I hope you too are looking forward to our Rootschatters meeting in Glasgow. I anticipate this will be my final post before the meeting – I am unlikely to be in Rootschat after tonight (Wednesday) until after the meeting. I will be sending a PM to anticipated attenders about contact arrangements/emergency message arrangements.

Getting home from the Hunterian
By train : Underground station, Hillhead.
By bus : Strathclyde Buses, Nos. 44, 59, from University Avenue to City Centre
By car : The University is signposted locally. Parking within the grounds is permit only. Free parking along Kelvin Way; pay-and-display in University Avenue and adjoining streets; disabled drivers within University grounds by arrangement. Map of the area is attached.
The embarrassing bit – what is it going to cost you?
All attractions are free, unless otherwise shown in the programme (eg Macintosh House). You’ll need to fork out for any fares (including the subway from Buchanan Street to Hillhead). Food and drink is over and above. No-one will frown if you bring your own sarnies and a thermos.
Weather
Glasgow, as it is on the west coast, is reasonably mild. The forecast (on Tuesday night) for Saturday is cloudy, temperatures ranging from 11 degrees Celsius at night to 14 degrees Celsius during the day – with a light wind. My advice is to bring a light waterproof or brolly just in case.
Photographs
There may well be a clamour, from Saturday evening, on the Rootschat boards, to see photos of the meet. If you do not, in principle, wish to be shown in any photos on the boards, then please make it clear to any photographers among us at the time snaps are taken.
Wear your badge!
Please wear a badge of some sort that helps identify you. It will also be a good ice breaker with your fellow Rootschatters. If you don’t wear one, don’t be surprised if you are ignored all day. Ideas on a badge -http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,104049.msg411757.html#msg411757.
Saturday evening
Some of us are staying over Saturday night. Decisions about where to meet up in the evening will be taken late afternoon.
The Sunday programme
The weather forecast is better for Sunday (at the moment anyway) which bodes well for a (voluntary) Sunday morning exploration of the Glasgow Necropilis. We are aiming to start (meeting at the gate behind St Mungo’s Museum of Religious Life and Art) at 10.30 am, and finish by 1 pm.
Looking forward to seeing you all in Glasgow.
JULIAN
-
Thanks for all the instruction can't wait to meet everyone
val
-
I'm still going. Looking forward to seeing everybody.
Believe it or not, despite living in Glasgow my whole life, I've never been to Provand's Lordship.
Passed it every day on the way to school from age 11 to 17 as well.
See you Saturday.
Dave
-
Further to Julian's PM with contact details, if you want another number please PM me.
As I live in Glasgow, it might be useful to have a local contact.
I'm happy to let anyone that is coming to the meet have my number.
If you send me a PM I can answer - it'll save me the time going through the list.
Dave
-
yes a contact number may be usful thanks Val alias grumpyblondie
-
I am still hoping to get to Glasgow if my husband can take me
As we don't know much about Glasgow can we park at the SSEC and get a taxi into the city centre
We have been to fishing exhibitions there and have an idea how to get to that part of Glasgow
If we don't manage it I hope you all have a nice time and maybe I can get to a meet nearer to home
Elizabeth
-
The SECC has it's own railway station with trains that run to Glasgow Central Station about every 15 minutes.
-
Thanks Dave,
That might be OK for us
Elizabeth keeping my fingers crossed
-
Hope you can make it.
If you get lost, you can phone me.
I'll send you a pm with the number.
-
I'll be wearing my Rootschat badge, which I suggest you do too

Gadget
Elizabeth - Gadget knows full well that I don't want my photograph taken in a booth, in a prison or in any place else! :)
-
Still hoping to get on Sunday I scanned the maps etc off and as a hint I left them on the table so that hubby could see but he hasn't said anything yet
We are going to our holiday home on the west coast and it takes about 1 @1/4 hrs to get to Glasgow so we will have to leave about 8.30ish
Gadget if you had said you needed help to move I could have popped down to where ever, hope its a nice spot you have settled in
Elizabeth
-
Pels
we were in Glasgow in January with our Turkish friends and took the city tour it was great we stopped at the Cathedral and then went over the road to a museum but Ive forgot what is was maybe Gadget can help me there
Elizabeth
-
I think it would be the St Mungo Museum - Glasgow's 'oldest' house dating from 1471 ::) ::) ::)
Next ;D
-
Gadget
Is this the place
Elizabeth
-
I think so, Elizabeth. I've not been in although I've passed it. It's in the old part just down from the Necropolis, I think :)
-
It is indeed. It's the Provands Lordship.
My mum has an old print of this from a different angle showing the Cathedral in the backgrouund.
I've carried a photograph of the print in my wallet for about 25 years.
-
Now thats what I call a photo to have
Dave it is great
Gadget we were through this place in January
we took the city tour bus and stopped here to go into the Cathedral then we went over the road to this spot after we that we boarded the bus again and it took us right through to the river side and the SSEC Exhibition Park and back to the stop beside the railway station it was a nice tour ,
now then on this tour was another museum and it had old motor bikes and aircraft i think,
there was no more time or we would have got off the bus to go into this museum anyone know what it is called
Elizabeth
-
Glasgow Transport Museum - directly opposite the Museum and Art Gallery.
Not far from Gray St Poll.
There's a replica of an old Glasgow Street in there too.
Great place to visit.
-
Hi everyone,
Wishing you all a safe journey to Glasgow and I'll see you there :)
Gotta go pack now etc...will be offline for about a week as I'll be having a holiday at my mum's... don't know how I'll cope ::)

Looking forward to it. Where in Glasgow was your father from?
-
Hi Dave,
Although born in William Street Anderston he grew up living at 291 Hope Street and went to Rockvilla School so I would have dearly have liked to have been at the meet this weekend even if it were just to walk down some of the streets that he used to talk about (Argyll, Vincent and Sauchiehall Street's just to name a few). I know that most of the minor streets that he trod as a youngster have all but disappeared under tarmac with road widening and "new build" etc but it would still have been nice to have said "I've been there and seen the area's if not the places" if that makes any sense.

Have a great day everyone.

I'm just home from the meet and thought I'd drop in and say what a fantastic day we had.
It was great to put faces to names and have a good 'real' blether with everybody. Although it started off pretty miserable in the morning, it was a glorious afternoon so the wander round the Necropolis ended the day perfectly, and of course as I speak, Scotland are now ranked 10th in the world so the atmosphere in Glasgow is something else!!
I can't wait to see everybody's photos - we all had turns each at snapping the group in front of the fountain so if there's somebody missing - I'm sure we can all swap at some point.
Anne
-
:D Looks like you all had a great time... Keep those piccy's coming... :D :D

Poll, that was delightfully put. You were a great bunch, but I'd reiterate those special thanks to our friends from Glasgow and surrounding area for demonstrating the warmth, humour and spark that makes Glasgow such a special place.
Thanks to everyone who came. I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. I hope Mr PollDoll, Mr Pels and Mitchell's sister had a good day and now understand why PollDoll, Pels and Mitchell are so attached to their RootsChat community. And thanks too to Sarah and Trystan for hacking up to Glasgow - it was great to see our caretakers mixing with the punters.
In thanking people, mustn't forget Gadget who drove the initial planning - you don't know what you missed young lady!
Some reflections on organising a meeting to follow when it's all sunk in a bit more - especially about what is manageable in a single day. Apologies to aspin about the dispappearing sunday morning programme - we hadn't computed that the impact of the soccer international would still be felt well into the next morning.
Here's what I think is the definitive full line-up, courtesy of my very patient daughter, except Pels has succeeded in hiding again ::)
joekar, janglaschu, julianb, Sarah, Trystan, Mr PollDoll, Timothy, grumpyblondie, apanderson, daval57, Fivecrates, pancho, mongoose2, gjil, Ann Baker, redkop, (Pels in hiding), Mr Pels, Mitchell, Michell's sister.

Did someone photoshop me out of the pic then ???? :o :o ;D

I've been getting the low down from Pels, Julian ;D Fancy you doing that :o and Poll and Sonia and Joe and Sarah and Trystan ... Well I can't believe it :D :D :D

I was back in July and it never stopped raining though it looks like the weather was good on the day,
best wishes Billy.

There were enough cameras.

Och, I was hoping for some more too!
I've got a few but they're all pretty much duplicates of what's already been posted unless anybody wants to see more of the Necropolis?

Red thats because u had your earplugs in. I got to sleep at 4 am. And its taken nearly 9 hours to get home from Liverpool. 1 diversion to a cemetery at Stone and some idiot who parked on the central reservation which the police decided to close the M25 duh!

After having kept that weekend free for months I am so disappointed to have missed the meet through some health problems. Glad to hear it went well and you all had a great time (that means there might be another one in the future and hopefully I'll make that one)

Italian Gothic style by William Leiper. The front was modelled on the Doge's Palace in Venice.

hi all,
long time, no see,
unfortunately, commitments have kept me away from the puter for what seems like a lifetime ( talk about going cold turkey)
very sorry i missed the meet and the chance to meet you all ( even poll, ;D ;D )
looks like everyone had a good time and the meet was a success.
maybe i can make the next one. ( wherever that may be)
best regards

Hi All
A serious point:
When people request no pictures of them to appear, I think that they mean it and their wishes should be complied with. It is a matter of trust.
Two people, at different meets, have, to my knowledge, now been affected by other people's blatant disregard of such requests.
Because of this, I certainly will not take any part in the organisation of other meets and will not be attending any.
Regards
Gadget
-
I have just re-visited this post since I posted the photographs.
I had not realised that there had been a serious request for particular photos not to be posted.
I SINCERELY apologise for any offence that has been caused to anyone by my actions.
Dave
A PM has been sent
-
Gadget I was at the meet and took pictures and was never asked by any chatters not to post which is a little surprising considering the mods seem to know that a chatter didnt want to be featured on the boards.
just when did the chatter ask for no posts because as I have said I didnt get told by anyone that they didnt want their photograph posted.
It looks like I havent posted that chatter but it would have been nice to be forewarned before I inadvertantly offended anyone.
Barry
-
I believe that Julian asked for anyone to inform him if they didn't want their photos taken or shown on the board.
Also, it is always best to check before posting anyone's photo and never assume that it's OK - it's a question of what is called 'Informed Consent' and just basic good manners.
Gadget
-
I didn't hear or see any indication of anyone asking not to be included in photos either ???
Practically everybody had a camera and I would have thought there was plenty of time and opportunity for us all to be informed either as a group or individually.
I'm not trying to be cheeky, but if I didn't want to be in a photo - I think I'd try and avoid standing in front of a camera. I think it would be the last thing on anyone's agenda to upset anybody, especially a fellow Rootschatter.
Anne
-
"I believe that Julian asked for anyone to inform him if they didn't want their photos taken or shown on the board."
Gadget isnt it Julian place to answer for himself and I reiterate no one asked me for permission for my photo to be posted and no one asked me not to post. Don't we trust each other!!!
-
Lovely photos of Kelvingrove Art Gallery, Polldoll, and of Templeton's, Daval.
Apanderson and I have just realised that we worked together (briefly) over twenty years ago - isn't it a small world! And we haven't aged a bit (cough!)
Janet

just when did the chatter ask for no posts because as I have said I didnt get told by anyone that they didnt want their photograph posted.
I was answering that point.
One should never assume that people give permission.

Unfortunately, sometimes it's taken as a challenge to get a photo of somebody who says "Please don't"
I'm not saying that's what it was in this instance, but it does happen.
Barbara
-
I'm not saying too much. but perhaps Pels should be the person to complain since she is the one that I have affected.
I've made my apology on the board and the rest is between me and Pels.
Let's get this post back on a lighter note.
Does anyone have any more photos of the architecture in Glasgow?
I forgot to take one of the front of Provand's Lordship. Anybody got one?
Dave
-
I really think a lesson has been learned and everyone will be a little more careful.
But please don't end the fantastic weekend you so obviously had (I dearly wish I could have been there) on a sour note.
Could you tell us more of what you did and what you saw and who you met . .. . and . .. . and .. . . and . . .!!!
I'm loving every one of the posts.
Barbara
-
even more difficult Tephra when no one says "dont"
And I realise that its easy to talk for someone else but isnt it the chatter concerned place to say something not the place of anyone not there to comment especially as iI and others have said no one said please dont put me in your photo.
All this discussion is going to do is put people off going to a meet and embaress a very nice lady.
So can we finish this disagreeable arguement and not post to get the last word in.

Do you know who owned this factory when it was built? Why build such a beautiful factory because that's what it was... ??? A place of work...
mab
The city council refused planning permission repeatedly for this carpet factory because they didn't want to bring the tone of the neighbourhood down. Eventually, the owner of the site gave in and hired William Leiper to design a building that would not be considered an eyesore and this piece of architecture is what he came up with. Some say that the frontage was to appear like a carpet laid out on Glasgow Green, others adhere to the story that when the building was commissioned in 1889, the owner wanted a replica of the Doge's Palace in Venice.

Interesting story Dave ............ The Doge's Palace in Venice ........ wonder if it had gold plated loo's ............. ;D ;D ;D

It's me! ::) ::)
I would have been here earlier but everyone who was there will
no doubt remember the tooth .. .. well party time now because it's
now back where it should have been on Saturday/Sunday! :-[ ;D :-[
On a more serious note the photo's were one of the reasons I very nearly didn't attend! As Gadget and many others knew my tooth was a great source of embarrassment - up until Thursday I considered cancelling the accomodation. I explained to Julian though - in the scheme of things my problem wasn't even worth a mention!
I'd spent so long looking forward to it - not only meeting up with everyone but also Glasgow is very special. Not only the city in general but in my opinion the people are amongst the best in the world - if not the best! :)
I'm not trying to be cheeky, but if I didn't want to be in a photo - I think I'd try and avoid standing in front of a camera. I think it would be the last thing on anyone's agenda to upset anybody, especially a fellow Rootschatter.
Anne
Anne if you look at the group photo I'm not visible or maybe just a bit in one but that was acceptable - my lack of inches would have otherwise warranted me a place on the front row of any other photo! ;D
Plus what kind of a day would it have been if you had to spend every second looking over your shoulder .. .. to see who was doing what? :-\
Dave has very graciously sent me a lovely PM and of course his apology is accepted - it's just Ricky that needs sorting out now! ;D ::) ;D
especially of all those men in kilts staying in our hotel ;D 8)

Oh Go on then lol ..... ;)here's another ;D ;D ;D The Back of the Provands Lordship ... the oldest house in Glasgow ... You'll never guess who promptly sat down on the nearest chair when I got in the house ... only to find the gasps of ooh and tutting were not in admiration of the houses's interior... just a show of horror at me plonking my frame on a 15th century chair with a sign emblazoned across the back saying "Please do not touch !!!" Oh dear ... in trouble again ... ::)

Hey good on ya Poll ............ if they didn't want anyone sitting in it they should have put the sign on the front ......... who looks at the back of a chair?? ?? ??

Centre of Glasgow ...Dave ...What do they call this clock and Steeple..was it a toll?.. I 've forgotten ??? ???
-
They're lovely aren't they Pels. I'm a point and shoot person myself, only problem is I usually point and shoot my thumb or foot :o :o
Barbara
-
Centre of Glasgow ...Dave ...What do they call this clock and Steeple..was it a toll?.. I 've forgotten ??? ???
It's the Tollbooth at Glasgow Cross. All that is left of a 17th-century building.
I've stolen this quote from another site.....
"Originally one of the most important buildings of the city, housing the city council, courts of law and the jail, as well as the place where the tolls, taxes and dues were collected, the Tolbooth was built in 1625-7 but grew more distant to the commercial centre of the city as that moved westward. In 1921, in an attempt to rejuvenate the area, the majority of the Tollbooth was demolished to make way for a new development. However, this development was never undertaken and the spire is now all that remains of the original building."
-
Aw Pels ...you are so so sweet .. and thankyou for your lovely comments about the pics ..I really am so delighted that people seem to be enjoying them ... even though they weren't there at the meet ..
Tephra ... really appreciate your enthusiasm for them too

Gadget, does that mean the Newcastle meet is off? :'(
I'm pleased to see all this has been resolved. ;D

All,
As one who attended the meet, (and a Glaswegian also), albeit for only part of the day, I was proud to hear everyones positive comments about my city, it's architecture and it's people. The photos are fantastic and could have been New England in the fall. The company was excellent.
Maybe I take the place for granted as I work in the city every day, and socialise there at weekends.
Was at a wedding in the Cathedral in September and can understand why you appreciated it so much. It is so nice to hear the 'no mean city' getting praise. It has improved so much in the last 20 years and I continually tell strangers that. On behalf of Glaswegians I will leave you with a pleasant if contradictary farewell 'will ye no' come back again'

I'm not happy to arrange anything at the moment - maybe someone else might step in.
I think we have to get a framework of rules for posting photos after meets, etc. Maybe even in bold on the thread or something. I'll leave it to the Mods/Admin to maybe work something out.
I was stating my concerns as a general principle that all should follow because this is about the 3rd or 4th time it's happened that I know of and I've only been a member for 18 months :-\
Polls photos and others have been great. That's how it should be :)

I remember the shop from when I was a lad. Didn't realise it was just as old as 1903 though.
If you liked it that much Barry, order online.

I've been following the thread with great interest, to find out what went on and hoping to be at the next meet-up wherever it is. It's been great to see the photographs, what lovely pictures of Glasgow you've all taken. I've only driven through it, never stopped, but it certainly looks worth a visit - on my list of places to go now.

I just had to post this ...captured in Glasgow this last weekend ... so its not off topic ! ;)

Just a point of interest,
We had a brilliant time at Glasgow, it was a great meeting and we all thoroughly enjoyed it.
Cameras are ever present at any RootsChat event and photographs are inevitably taken. These photos will quite naturally be posted on here by those who attended, and that is fine. Naturally obscene photographs or unsuitable ones would be unacceptable. RootsChatters who turn up for these events accept that this is the case.
-
Great photos everyone, :D
Poll those views & architecture of Glasgow are terrific,
thanks for sharing them,
Yvonne

Poll ............ I'm getting withdrawal symptoms .... :-\..... any more??

The Cathedral seems to have been everybody's favourite so here's one of mine.

I love Monumental Masonry so the following are a few examples from the Necropolis.

And some more . . . .

And just to bore everyone with more . . . . .

I have to say that I agree with Trystan on this one. To me, there has been a big over-reaction by some of us to this issue. Even people who were actively taking photos did not want photos of themselves posted, and this could not have been foreseen; one assumes if people take photos, they are OK with photos being posted. This is one of a couple of reasons why I am not planning to attend any further Rootschat meets.

Love the piccies, apanderson.
You seem to have been lucky with the weather :D Now Glasgow can be cold and grey and wet as you know ::) ::) ::)
Gadget
-
We certainly were lucky with the weather!
It was really a 'spur of the moment' descision to head to the Necropolis as the forecast for the Sunday was rain. I know this mucked up poor Aspin's plans but as you said Gadget, Glasgow on a cold, grey, wet and windy day is pretty miserable. Doesn't bother me too much (being a born n' bred Glaswegian anyway) - I spend half my life in graveyards no matter what the weather's like - I can't help myself!!
On the plus side for 'graveyarding' in the middle of winter - if it's bright enough and the light is 'just right' - you can get some amazing photos. On the down side - you end up with soaking wet mucky knees with kneeling in the snow . . . . . not that that puts me off!
Another few Necropolis photos . . . .
-
Great photos, Ann. As the weather suddenly became quite bright, we pretty well had the place to ourselves, and as everyone can see the mid-afternoon light was very good for piccies.
-
Looks like a super time, we would have loved to have joined you all,
Photo's are great,
Glad you all had super time
-
Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr Thanks apanderson for your thoughts
It didn't spoil the day for us a little disappointed at missing you all but saying that I am enjoying all the lovely pictures and we too love to look at the old buildings anywhwere ( don't make them like that now )
By the way in one of the book shops we were looking at a grand little book showing you the old buildings they are taking down and re- building in their place I think it was £9.99
Its a shame to take these buildings down but I suppose they have to
Elizabeth
-
I think most of the old buildings now have to have their facade retained.
In other words, the front of the building will stay the same but it's only a 'facade' - once you get past the front door it's a completely new building. I do like the old buildings - some of the new ones are complete monstrosities.

JUST GOT IN ...,......

Here is another..

Should I change my name to Anne McFaster then???

Noooo ;D Yours sounds better ...but at least it still sounded Scottish ;) ;) I popped along to the Hampden Park on Sunday and thought this was so patriotic ...I loved it ..!!

Hi everyone,
I just got home tonight and I'm catching up on the posts...I've been fidgety all week because I didn't have access to the internet ::)
Fantastic photos...I want to add that I had a great time on Saturday and it was so lovely meeting you all...thanks to Gadget and Julian for the planning :)
Don't want to duplicate the pics so have just a few to add...a couple of them daft!
So glad that we went to the Necropolis...what a wonderful place...I could have happily spent all day there.
Here's the daft ones - Billy Connolly's banana boots and the "Tardis" :)

The carpet factory and....a statue beside the oldest house (can't remember who he is)

Two from the Necropolis

Even more excellent photos! Thanks, Elaine

Glad you enjoyed it - the sun came out at the right time. (But I don't expect you'd have fancied staying there all night!)

Noooo...don't fancy that ;D
Elaine

Hmmm.... if Scottish Spirits could talk eh .... there were a few famous people there that somehow we didn't know ::) is that us or them ?
-
I'm ashamed to say that I didn't recognise any of the names that I saw but was chuffed to bits to find the author of Wee Willie Winkie...William Miller. If I'd gone further up, I'd have found John Knox...ah well, next time :)
Found a guide to the Necropolis here http://www.rootschat.com/links/023a/ which I'll definitely take next time.

;D ;D ;D ;D

Pels....you have a sense of humour... ;) that 's undeniable ;D
Dave ... and there was me thinking that you were joking about the patriotic
" blue" flashing men on pelican crossings in the Hampden Park area !!

dave
Just shows what you take for granted. I knew bout those wee blue men - aren't they everywhere ? Maybe not but should be! Just another wee quirk of a great city.
Now I have a question to stir the pot here! If Edinburgh is our capital city why is our national team's (footie that is) home ground in Glasgow? The hallowed ground of Hampden Park!
I honestly don't know but very glad it is having stood on them terraces from a wee lassie!
Have also done the Murrayfield ones too just to show no bias! Curious!
Ann
-
Since when has Edinburgh been the capital? ::)
Good point about Hampden tho'. Will ask some of my mates.
-
There was me thinking it was Inverness :D
Glasgow's my favourite Scottish city. The people are so friendly - a bit like Newcastle ;D ;D ;D
-
Yer right there Gadget. Some of my best mates are from Newcastle.
TOON ARMY TOON ARMY
-
Funny that - Newcastle and Glasgow have the same atmosphere of friendly bustle . You don't get it anywhere else. I wonder why :-\
-
Do I sense some mutual backslapping here? ;D ;D ;D ;D
or is it patriotic spirit (whiskey) ???
-
Its whisky in Scotland.
Whiskey is for the Irish and illiterate English people called Mongoose ;) ;).
Wot, me nitpicking??? ;D ;D ;D ;D
-
I was about to the same thing, Dave, but far more politely.
Scotch is Whisky, the rest is Whiskey ;D ;D ;D
-
I have to say with 350 bottles of single malt in the garage I wondered when someone would notice the spelling.
Anyone want to buy some off me!!
btw the real name is uisge beatha

ahhhhh, now you're talking but that's a Malt :D
-
Now I have a question to stir the pot here! If Edinburgh is our capital city why is our national team's (footie that is) home ground in Glasgow? The hallowed ground of Hampden Park!
Possibly something to do with Queens Park who are based at hampden and who are credited with being the oldest club in Scotland . The first Scotland team to play against England had all 11 players from Queens Park.
-
uuurrgghh whisky/whiskey :P :P :P :P
I can't even stand the smell of the stuff, let alone the taste. But each to their own ;D
Is it pronounced Hwhisky in Scotland? One of my work colleagues told me the other day that while she was at school in Edinburgh, they were taught to say Hwhat, Hwhy, Hwhere etc, which is a good way of learning the words with wh, as long as they don't put the H at the beginning ;D
-
A good Islay malt is my favourite tipple. :D
I pronounce it whisky in my west of Scotland brogue! lol

Response frae ma mate Mick.
"The probable answer is because it was the first.
That is, the first purpose built ground capable of holding the vast crowds that were going to football matches, the fastest growing spectator sport). The world's first international football match between Scotland and England was played at the West of Scotland Cricket ground in Partick. It finished 0 - 0. Some of the players apparently wore monocles!
Additionally, the working class masses of the day in Glasgow were more likely to be seen at football games, than at the more gentlemanly sports of cricket and rugby, favoured by the Edinburgh people. Scotland's national rugby stadium is of course in Edinburgh (Murrayfield).
Incidentally, did you know that Hampden Park was named after an English lord and civil war general, John Hampden. Not surprising really, when you look at the street names around the south side eg Victoria Rd, Albert Rd etc."

Dave
ta. Dunno why it had never occured to me before about it being in Glasgow cos is just there! Think you're right maybe about the audience.
I knew where it had got its name from. Can;t remember how I know but I did. Probably something at school and that was a wee while ago. ;D
Cheers for that
Ann
