Hi

Your message reads like she only married Thomas Dunn in 1861 when she would have been 70 but I suspect this is her in 1851 in Kingswinford

Samuel Dunn 34 b Somerset tin plate manufacturer
Ann Dunn 30  ?? Brecon Wales - not very clear on image
William Dunn 31 brother  widower accountant b Bath
Samuel Dunn 5  nephew b Glamorgan
Mary Dunn 3  neice b Glamorgan
Sophia Dunn 60  mother b Bath

Mary Ann Waldman 26 servant

Quote
then moved to Wiveliscombe

There is no Sophia Dunn b Bath 1791 on the 1861 census.  There is an Ann Sophia b Wiveliscombe 1809 and living in Exeter in 1861 but this cannot be the right one as she is shown as unmarried and is 20 years younger

Thanks for reply. It was a typing error, she married Thomas Dunn in 1816 in Bath. I'm looking for info about Sophia Dunn, nee Cross pre-marriage; the 1851 census shows her staying with son, Samuel and his wife, Ann and widowed son, William as you rightly say in Kingswinford.Thanks for your help. rgds. bircham

Hi Bircham
Did you find any more information on Sophia Cross Dunn?   She is my 4x great grandmother and I have found her in the following locations;

1841 - Brislington Somerset
1851 - Kinswinford (as CaroleW)
1861 - Lodging with the Morgan family in Llangynwyd, Glamorgan
1871 - Living with her daughter Sophia Cross Popkin in Maesteg, Glamorgan
Died 1874 Glamorgan

I hope ths information is useful - I didn't know who her husband was so great to find about about marriage to Thomas Dunn

Thanks so much for your information. I had lost touch with Sophia (Cross) Dunn after the birth of William, I believe there were 2 daughters born in the Bristol area but exact dates evade me, do you have them and I believe they were both married before Thomas Dunn, their father died. One went to live in the Liverpool area and the other Wales. Do you have any earlier information about Sophia (senior), please. I can't believe after all this time a further link has been made. I have traced the Dunn family back to the late seventeenth century.

Thanks Trish for your post.
I did get Hannah from the original marriage record. I just assumed that Hannah maybe Sophia's sister. Unfortunately I can't find out any more information about Sophia, parents, exact date of birth.

Hi Bircham,
Yes they are difficult to pin down.
We have as Children of Thomas/Sophia;
SAMUEL c 1817
WILLIAM c 1820
SOPHIA c 1829

Sophia Snr (birth 1806) and Jnr (1829) are under Duns in 1841 Census and Sophia is a Schoolmistress.

There is a possible Mary Down? to a Thomas/Sopjhia in Nunney, Somerset, 1828 also.
(yes it is down as Down?)
I cant find any Christenings fro the others with my resources.

Trish, thanks for the input. I think the birth date for Sophia (snr. should be 1796I doubt that she was married at 10yrs. old) I have records for Samuel, William and Sarah, I believe there is another daughter, Sophia and I think a further son, Henry.(possibly died young) They seem to have moved around Wiveliscombe, Bath and Bristol. Hi Bircham,
I was not suggesting that she was actually born c 1806 only that is the age she was listed as in the 1841 Census. I realise that she was born c 1791 by other info on Census.

Children of THOMAS/SOPHIA Dunn;
William DUNN, Christened 03 November 1819
Henry DUNN Christened 06 January 1822
At St Swithin, Walcot, Somerset

Samuel Cross DUNN, 30 March 1817 (Fathers Occp Clothier) St Andrews, Wiveliscombe, Somerset

Neither Sophia or Hannah Cross baptised in Bath area in  the 1790s can be found on FreeREG. However that does not have complete coverage. The most relevant "hole" is Bathwick 1783-1812, there may be some non-conformist chapels as well. There is a transcription of Bathwick in Bath Library. I'll check it for you next time I'm there.

Thank you so much for all your effort. I'm not sure what relation Hannah Cross is to Sophia, only that she was a witness at her wedding in 1816, at Bath, St. James, possibly a cousin. Two of Sophia's son's were baptized at St. Swithin's, Walcot. Happy hunting and thank you once again. Bircham

Hi Bircham,

I went to the Library this morning but I'm afraid I drew a blank. There were only two Cross children baptised at Bathwick in the 1783-1812 register but they weren't the ones we wanted. Susanna in 1798 and John in 1800, both children of Richard and Ann. I've also looked at a couple of other transcripts of Bath parishes which are not covered by FreeREG, although they are available elsewhere online. No luck there either.  It looks like either Sophia was not baptised in Bath or she was  but the record has not survived. (It is quite possible the Bathwick records are incomplete. There are suspiciously few baptisms in the 1780s and perhaps still not the full quota in the earlier 1790s.)
