Title: william henry heathfield
Post by: comfort on Wednesday 10 October 07 20:12 BST (UK)
hi
can anyone please help
william henry heathfield married emma hazell or hasell in pontypridd in 1902,
they had children
 henry born 1903
frank born 1905
tilly born 1906
ernest born 1912
gertrude born 1914,
then in 1917 emma is now marrying john w, chorley in cardiff,
so i take it that william henry died, but i cant find anywhere a death for him,i was told he was in the war but again i cant find on the commonwealth war graves site anything on him.
william was born in 1878 cardiff,
i have looked on the ancestry site and every thing i can think of
any help would be welcome

Hi

There's a death record for William H Heathfield in Cardiff Sep 1931. Listed as age 51, possibility?

Cheers,
Mark

Hi

Listed on the 1901 census  as 'general servant, domestic'. I haven't looked for him on the 1911 census yet.
I've noted a burial record in Cathays Cemetery, Cardiff on the 30th Sep 1931. Unfortunately I can't recall whether it stated William Henry or William H Heathfield. The burial record should also list an occupation.

Cheers,
Mark

I don't have the census ref sorry but no, I noted that he was listed as Henry on the 1901 census. In occupation at 19 Ruby St, Roath, Cardiff with the rest of his family members.

I'm aware of most of the Heathfields born in Cardiff but I don't have a record of a William born in Cardiff 1886. Just checked FreeBMD & there's no birth record for a William heathfield between 1880 & 1890 in Glamorgan?
Could you tell me who else is in occupation at the Porth address.

Thanks,
Mark

Ah...just clicked.

I have a record of the person in Porth. On his birth record he's listed as 'Willie'. His parents are Charles Heathfield & Ann Thomas, I don't have a record of them on the 1891 census but his father is at 19 Cathays Terrace in Cardiff in 1901. His mother passed away in 1898.

Cheers,
Mark

Hi
I am confused now
1881 census Rg11 5285/155.52
18 ruby street Roath
henry Heathfiels b 1884 devon railway gaurd
martha b 1889
William b 1879
I 1891 Rg12/4388/21/34 41 Ruby Street Roath
 henry b 1853 fireman devon
martha b 1858 cardiff
lucy b 1877
Wiliam b1879
gertrude b1884
martha b1885
frank b1889
polly b 1891
I noted that william  =m= emma Hazell
1901 censsu
36 ruby street Roath
Rg13/4975/55/38
james Hazell b 1858
Emma wife b 1858
Emma daughter b 1886 cardiff
fred b 1889
william b1892
thomas b1895
alice b 1896
I also noted that the Hazell family by  the next census was living in Ynysybwl pontypridd
Emma's eldest son b 1903 was born Ynysybwl  and living in monmouth but no sign of william if that is the correct Emma Heathfield b 1886 cardifff that matches eldest son Henry on that census
although this does not help find William ???
cheers cardiff ???

William's parents are actually Henry & Matilda Davies. She's incorrecty listed as Martha on occasion.
Henry born 1852 in Warkleigh Devon & Matilda born 1859 in Cardiff.

I had a record of William Henry's marriage to Emma Hazell but I'd never looked into her background. Interesting to see they were also living in Ruby Street!

Can I just check - Emma is listed in Monmouth on the 1911 census along with her son, Henry James Heathfield? But no husband, William Henry? Is that what you've found?

Cheers,
Mark

Many thanks for the info. Definitely the right Emma. I've mapped out all of the Heathfields in Cardiff for the period & I'm unaware of any other possibilities.
Also the children do tie in. Frank passed away in Cardiff 1906 so wouldn't be about in 1911. Tilly is Amelia Matilda Heathfield, born in Cardiff. The absence of William Henry is a mystery?

Possible that William Henry is not the father of Ernest & Gertrude? Anyone seen a copy of their birth certs? Could John W Chorley be their father prior to his marriage to Emma?

As William Henry appears to be absent by 1911 & doesn't seem to be any of the three William Heathfields killed in WWI I'm inclined to believe that it's him buried in Cardiff 1931.

Just did a quick search for the parents of Emma Hazell on the 1881 census.
Assume that's them at 2 Zinc Street, Roath?
James & Emma HASELL  along with children, Amelia, James & Mary...

Think I might now be able to offer an explanation for William's disappearance. A Henry Heathfield of Cardiff spent time at HMP Dartmoor. By a process of elimination I'm very confident that it was in fact William Henry.

Cheers,
Mark

I remember stumbling across that page ages ago & whilst guessing it had a connection to my family tree I didn't know how it fitted in. The pieces only fell into place after looking into William Henry at your prompting so thanks to you too.

Mark

Hi Pat

He was there in 1911 but I don't know when he arrived. I gather that Dartmoor Prison Records no longer exist from that period but assuming he faced trial in Glamorgan then records would be held in the Glamorgan Record Archive so I plan to make a visit at some point. Judging by the Western Mail I'd imagine there's quite a lot of material!

I also found an article in The Times 30 Jan 1923 where a 3 year sentence he'd received for housebreaking had been quashed.

If I obtain any more info I'll pass it on.

Regards,
Mark

Now I have another question. One of the last Heathfields in Glamorgan that I can't account for is Winifred M Heathfield, born 1915 in Cardiff. The mother's maiden name is listed as Heathfield which I took as meaning that the mother was unmarried. However I've just traced a marriage to Samuel R Anning in Cardiff 1934 and the bride is entered twice - once as Winifred M Heathfield & once as Winifred M Hasell?
Likely to be another child of Emma's if not William's?

Cheers,
Mark
