I'm not an expert on MICs but it looks like he was a private, Royal Berkshire Regt. Went to France 30 July 1915. Was awarded the 1914-15 Star, British and Victory medals (a standard 'trio' - many men didn't get the 14/15 star as they 'arrived' abroad too late). The card is a bit fuzzy but that's my guess!

There's a 30% approx chance that his service record is at Kew. The rest were bombed in WWII. Got to go or pay a researcher I think. The unit War Diary is also at Kew - some are on lone so cehck the National Archives website. That will give you a day by day (brief) account of where his unit went and what it did. Unlilkely to name him unless he took part in something notable.

Any histories of his unit? Might include him in a nominal roll or might mention him in the text but unlikely.

Regimental Museum?

The cards are a bit fuzzy. I understand that the 6 cards you have will include your man assuming the numbers match. Not sure how that would work if you didn't know the numbers and the names were all the same. You'd need to ask whoever said he's on two cards how they came to that conclusion. Not saying they are wrong but they'll know what they based their comment on.

The local press for his area might have something on him too but its a hard plod, usually through microfilm, assuming the papers have not been indexed on name etc.

In your last post you have posted he was in 2/4th Battalion. 2/4th Formed at Reading 6/11/14, to Maidenhead, Feb 1915 to Northampton in 184th Bde, 61st Division, April 1915 to Chelmsford, March 1916 to Salisbury Plain, 27 May 1916 landed at Havre (France). 11th Nov 1918 184th Bde 61st Division, Sepmeries S.E. of Valenciennes.

You need to re-post a clear medal index card, so we can see it.

Sue,

Be careful that you have the right Thomas Dance. There is also this one. Transfer to the Labour Corps suggests that he may have been wounded.

Not an expert but it looks like a plaque with the battle honours (where they fought) of his regiment on. Not uncommon as far as I know. Probably bought back home, post war I would have thought.

I think there was a 'protocol' for the award of battle honours to a unit. I don't know if the photo shows one that reflects what was officially 'awarded' to his unit or whether its a bit more of a decorative item with all the 'big' villages they fought in listed.

After looking at the pic, the Division sign is for the 61st Division, this would put his unit as 2/4th Battalion
