Can anyone read the last word on the occupation of John Silvester on the 1891 census in Warton (the Fylde one), Lancashire? RG12/3450; Folio 24; Page 12
Retired Commercial something?
-
dunno ! but in 1881 he was a 'Commission Agent out of employ'
RG11/4250; Folio: 30; Page: 15
Mum in law (Wildgoose - excellent name) was a retired Boarding house keeper ....
keep working back and might find his actual occupation !

1871 - RG10/3661; Folio: 146; Page: 25 - Stockport, Cheshire
'Traveller in Cattle Medicines' (I think !)

Hi both :)
Retired Commercial Traveller
-
not sure Tatsper - the first letter is an S isnt it - identical to the one in 'Silvester' ?
-
Sob Newf - have you lost your faith in me? :P
Have a look at the T in Thomas a little further down the page - don't you think it's the same? :-\
-
I agree its most likely to be Commercial Traveller, but the 'shape' of the whole word doesnt look right either :P
could be Tilvester then - and Shomas :D

but the 'shape' of the whole word doesnt look right either :P
Can't really argue with that ;D I reckon he reached out for an 'R' and changed it to 'V'. Plus he forgot the 2nd 'L' :P

Thanks. Traveller was the only thing that I could think of that came after commercial, but I could get the various squiggles to fit. But they don't fit any other word either, so I think I'll go with that.
I couldn't decide between Wildgoose and Wildforce and was going to try both to see what came up for m-i-l.

I would say the first letter is an S then looks like t then ur not sure of the next letter then ile and possibly an s on the end ? that makes S*ur*iles ? ???
the whole record has been written very quickly ( the t crossings are way in front of the letter which indicates speed and carelessness with small detail yet every t seems to be crossed except the second letter in the mystery word so perhaps it isn't St as I first thought. Could the first letter be another capital letter not S ? where the two parts have become seperated ?
