Hi Dave
First of all, welcome to Rootschat :)
As your grandmother was born after the cut off point (1906) for online records, you would probably only be able to get her birth registration from Edinburg which you could get from here if you are away from the Capital:
http://www.gro-scotland.gov.uk/famrec/bdm.html
Otherwise, you might be lucky and someone here may have access to the baptism registers for that time :)
In the mean time it might be possible to trace her parents, do you have any idea of their names, etc. Anything that would help.
Regards

All is not lost! I've just found your grandmother's death entry. She died 21 May 1947
Margaret Morton Gilfillan, m. to William Gilfillan, plater. She was aged 32. Died at 10 or 6 Victoria Drive, Renfrew. Her parents were Lachlan McVicar (foreman platelayer) and Agnes, nee Derrick.
Both parents were alive so there might be a lot to go on :)
I'll have a good nose around !

Lachlan and Agnes married July 10th 1914, Greenock.
He was a merchant seaman then, aged 26. His parents were - Dugald McVcar, railway porter and Jessie, nee Bain
Agnes Derrick was a dressmaker, aged 26. Her parents were- Peter Derrick, ship rigger (dec) and Margaret, nee Morton (dec)
Still not sure where Portree comes in but :-\

Here's the Skye link

Dugald MacVicar, 33, salmon fisher, b. Portree
Jessie, 27, b. Gairloch Rossshire :)
Lachlan, 3, b. Portree
Mary, 1, b. Portree
I'm assuming that Dugald and Jessie married circa 1888

I've been trying to find the death of Elizabeth Morton, Joe. It would give a lead to the Irish line - husband and parents, I was hoping but so far not a dickie bird :(

However, I have found the death of her daughter, Margaret Derrick :)
8 May 1911, Greenock Infirmary, 52, widow of Peter Derrick, ships rigger.
Parents - James Morton, police constable, deceased and Eliza nee McAuley (dec)
So over to Ireland for those two. I'm no good at Ireland, Joe - how's your searching there :)

Death 13 July 1900
Peter Derrick (looks like Yacht master) and there's a corrected entry next to it! married to Margaret Morton
aged 42 at Greenock Infirmary. Parents - John Derrick, sawyer, dec. and Mary, nee Brace, dec.
Looks like he had a nasty accident - compound fracture of leg, fractured arm, internal injuries obscure and shock 1 day

WOW Gadget you are amazing! The information you found for David's McVicars gives me hope :)
I am looking for the parents of John McVicar born 1834, I was told Isle of Skye; Angus McVicar and An McAly(don't know if this is a correct spelling or not-recently found MacAulay that sounded similar).
With McVicars having such large families I thought there had to be more children for Angus and Ann, but I have not found any family information for John or his parents.
Also, I notice a lot of Hugh McVicar's is that a "nickname" for any paticular name?
Thanx

Hi Nannette :)
Maybe it would be better to start another thread for your McVicar's so that they don't get mixed up with Dave's
Hugh was just a name. The Gaelic for it was Hùisdean.

But look out as well for Ewen/Ewan, which was often the intermediate form between Huisdean/Uisdean and full Anglicisation as Hugh. Ewen/Ewan was by far the most common form in the islands from 1800 through 1850.

or Eóghan and Euan and Aodh :)
-
Yes! Ewen/Ewan is in my family alot too.
Thanx
