I have two birth dates for amy appleby one born 1870 the other 1884
both in Alnwick Northumberland and both parents are the same Thomas and Hannah Appleby
any help would be welcome

Am I right in thinking you got this information from the 1891 census?  I believe that Amy's age of 7 has been misread by the transcriber as 21 and so shows up in the index as 1870 when it should be 1884.
