Irish census records after 1911 are not available.
If you mean that Robert Hugh Shaw was born in the 1850s then 1st complete census in Ireland is 1901 but it is not indexed- supposed to be coming online in various stages hopefully soon.

Sorry that was my mistake, i meant to write 1850, silly me. Thanks for the reply, looks like i will have to wait a bit longer. Thanks Aghadowey for your advice.

There might be other sources you could try for information besides 1901 census. Have you tried looking for church records? To find the church records (if you haven't already) you need to know religion and where they lived, locate the nearest churches and then see if the records you need exist.

Hello Marcus,

My husband is descended from John Shaw b1791 Antrim and Jane 1794 Antrim (maiden name unknown)

They had a son Hugh Shaw b1827 Antrim who married Rosemary Morton b1829, Antrim daughter of William Morton b1781 Antrim and Rose (maiden name unknown) b1787 Antrim

Their son Robert Hugh Shaw b1865 Co. Antrim married Mary McNeice in Edinburgh in 1887 (the McNeice family were also originally from Antrim).

My husbands mother was their youngest child Mary who was born in 1911 in West Lothian, Scotland.

thanks grandmasheila

It looks like my shaws may not be directly linked to yours unless john and jane 1791 had other children. Although i cant quite get that far back yet!!!

The names hugh shaw etc dont ring any bells, although until the 1911 census for antrim is published next month i have many questions still unanswered about my grandfather let alone my great grandfather or my great great grandfather....

unfortunately marriage records dont always tell you the ages of individuals which i think is essential for trying to trace people this is why i am a bit stuck, at the moment i'm having to estimate my great grandfathers birth year, it doesnt help that there are lots of shaws in antrim in the late 1800's either. ( although  that might be blessing later on).

anyway thanks for you info, when i get some more accurate dates about my shaws, i will post them up here, who knows there must be a connection somewhere!!!!!

marcus

ps these are possibly some shaw family members (see photo) my Dad had this photograph in his collection but does not know anything about it.......calling all  roots chat people  (especially shaw family members)if you recognise anyone in this photo let me know....co's i have not a clue, they probably not even related to me (ha ha)....its believed to be samuel or james shaw (in fact if anyone can put a rough date to the photo based on the clothes) i might be able to narrow it down - knowing my luck they are smiths from my dads mothers side.

Hi, I have been fascinated by the emails about the Ballymena Shaws.

My GGG Grandfather was  John Shaw.He was born near Ballymena. He married and had the following children:
Alexander Shaw (abt 1828) My GG Grandfather
Jane Shaw  (abt 1826)
Robert Shaw (abt 1827)
Daniel Shaw (abt 1835)
John Shaw (abt 1837)
Mary Shaw (abt 1840)

Alexander married Elizabeth Scott in 1851. They has a son William John Shaw (my Great Grandfather) who later married Mary Curry in 1879. At that time he lived in Killyree, but they moved to Broxburn West Lothian. In 1880 my Grandmother Elizabeth Ann Shaw was born.

Iwould love to think that the photos in this message board are distant relatives but can't be sure. Can anyone put this jigsaw together?

Hi John,
Our Shaws also lived in Broxburn, at Greendykes road and Grange Road.  Hugh Shaw b1827 Dunaghy m Rosemary Morton their son Robert Hugh Shaw b1865 was my husbands grandfather.  He married Mary McNeice in Edinburgh - the McNeice family were also from Antrim.  Perhaps your ancestors and ours were cousins?  Robert Hugh Shaw was an oil retortman when he lived in Broxburn.

Hello Grandma and all other Shaw Searchers,
I am interested in more info on your John Shaw and descendants. My 4x Gr-Grandfather was John Shaw b. about 1766 and d.1869 - age 103 yrs, Drumramer, Cloghogue, Ahoghill, Co. Antrim. At present I have 3 sons for this John. His wife was Margaret - surname unknown.
John Shaw b. abt 1791, William Shaw b. abt 1790, and Samuel b. 1800 - Samuel married Margaret Cunningham. From records we have it seems both John and William also married Margarets - surnames unknown.
William was my 3x Gr-Grandfather and I have substantial trees for all 3 families. I am very happy to share this information to anyone with the same interests.
Regards,
Coline.

I think I have traced my ancestors to this line.  The birth dates line up for the birth dates listed in the marriage of James Shaw (b. ~1826, 7 of Drumramer) to Mary Anne Cunningham (of Ballylummin) on 29 April 1848.  The Marriage Registration lists James father as John.  This appears to correspond to the John born about 1791 in your post.  I would be intersted in any information you have on this family.
Thanks

hello hopelesssold,

my name is Marcus and i have been researching the Shaw's of antrim for about 5 or 6 years, James Shaw born 1826 is my great grandfather (x3) he did indeed marry Mary Ann cunningham and from my research they had two children James (1855) and Mary Rachel (1868). on the marriage record for James Shaw (married 1848) it states that James's father is john Shaw a farmer but as yet i have unable to confirm with complete confidence that john Shaw born 1791 clog, ahoghill antrim is james's father any information you might have would be most welcome.

many thanks

Hi Marcus

I do not have definitive records that establish a direct tie.  I have some circumstantial evidence I found on my own and received additional information from Coline who posted above.  Coline indicated that John's father was John whose gravestone in Ahoghill lists his date of death as 1869 at age 103.

I am descended from James' son William who was named one of the executors of James' will.  I can send additional information I have on James and others if you wish.

hello
James Shaw (1827-1902) is my great x2 grandfather, through his son John Shaw and my mother Muriel Shaw (1930 - ).  I am keen to confirm James Shaw father - who I think was John Shaw (1766- 1869) and establish previous ancestors. I am trying to get back to John Shaw of Ballygalley, brother of James Shaw. It was James Shaw and his wife Isabella built Ballygalley Castle, Antrim Ireland in 1625.
