Title: Map of Paisley
Post by: moryan on Tuesday 13 November 07 11:47 GMT (UK)
Hello there good people!
Just wondering if anyone can direct me to good source for old and current maps of Paisley so that I may look at where my ancestors lived.

Enjoy your day,
Kindest regards  :D

Hello Moryan,

I have a poster-sized map of Paisley (1838) that I purchased in person from the museum in Paisley.

What street / name are you looking for?

Justin

Hello Justin and others,
Thank you for your replies.  I will investigate your links.  Justin, I am looking for several streets.  I am in Australia.

Kind regards

Hello Moryan,

Let me know which streets you are trying to locate (and what time period) and I'll see what I do.

Which part of Australia is your home? I have cousins in Melbourne, and some good friends here in Dublin come from Townsville (way up on the NE coast).

All the best, Justin

Hi Justin,
I am in Melbourne, whereabouts are your cousins?  I actually have a girlfriend over from Dublin at the moment who can't believe the heat (although it isn't HOT yet!).  Here are the times and streets that I would be interested in:

Camphill Place Paisley 1850's +
Ferguslie Paisley 1940's
Barclay Street, Paisley 1850's
Broomlands, Paisley 1890's
Thread Street, Paisley 1850's
Wallneuk
New Sneddon

I would appreciate any help

Kind regards
Lesley

Hello Lesley,

My wife always describes anything over 15 deg C as roasting. I, myself (not a hardy Celt) need at least 30 to get my shorts on. You can tell your friend that it's so murky today, I can scarcely see the chimneys in the bay (Poolbeg power station), and my office is on the coast near Merrion Gates.

Anyway, to the streets:

Camphill Place
Extant. Runs due south from Canal Street opposite Buchanan Street (OS 1858 plate XII.2.23). Shown on 1838 map, but unnamed.

Ferguslie
Extant. Continuation of George Street heading westwards out of town

Barclay Street
Ran north-to-south between George and Canal Streets (OS 1858 plate XII.2.23)

Broomlands
Extant. Runs east-to-west continuation of High Street

Thread Street
Extant. Runs north-eastwards from River Cart south of the Abbey. Now a continuation of Gordon Street

Wallneuk    Road
Extant. Runs north-eastwards parallel to railway line from Renfrew Rd on north side of town. Gallowhill Road on OS map of 1858 (plate XII.2.10)

New Sneddon
Ran north-eastwards close to R. Cart on the north side of town.

I have scanned a large portion of the 1838 map, which I'll gladly send on, if you send me your email address by PM. Otherwise you can locate the streets on ordnance survey map of 1858 available from the NLS.

Any questions, give me a shout.

Justin

PS My cousins live in the eastern suburb of Caulfield North - is that a separate town?

Hi Justin!
Thank you for info.  If the offer of the scanned map is still ok how do I send you my email address by PM??.  I appreciate your help.  I live in the northern suburbs of Melbourne - your relatives are on the other side of town but only about 1/2 hour away.
Enjoy your day.

Lesley,
suggest you delete your personal email from the thread.
It is normally recommended on RC that you don't post your email to avoid spammers.
You could send it to Justin by PM.
or alter it, changing the "@" to "at" and the "." to "dot"
