Can anyone please .. see clearly who John Woodcocks father was.. and the address at time of marriage please..?.. thankyou..jui....
-
Hi jui
Father looks like Samuel Woodcock.
Kerry
-
Yep - Samuel to me as well :)
Address too small - any chance of a larger bit of just that, please?
Obviously<something> Pembroke Dock but what ??? ??? ???
-
Hi Jui,
John's father: Samuel Woodcock Bricklayer
Could you rescan the address bit at a higher resolution? :)
-
Annie's address looks like it could be Trent Street, <something> Pembroke Dock.

Got the bit Pembroke Dock Gadget ;D
Is the long word above Tent Encampment or something ?? Very difficult to read.

perhaps an area of marriage might give us a clue for the residence
-
I've tried enlarging it Kerry but it gets too pixelated - we agree Pembroke Dock.
Cant see it as Tent - wrong T and the writing is very neat. I thought it looked like Hut ???
Hut Encampment Pembroke Dock ???
-
Yep doesn't look like the T in Trent Street, I think you could be right with H for hut though.
I tried enlarging too but very pixellated.

there were a lot of Hut Encampments around so it wouldn't be unusual.
-
A sort of temporary dwelling on the dockside for workers maybe?

Well, let's see - it looks like he was in the Royal Munster Fusiliers and it was 1855 - was that Crimea time?
Added - 1853-56.
-
1854 springs to my mind, so history teacher you could be right ;D ;D ;D ;)
-
Just checked and added on previous post - 1853-1856. Maybe on way back or from Ireland :)
-
there were two hut encampments where i live (not there now) i can find out more about them if you like but yes they seem to be around ports.
my grandfather was placed in one when he came to town - he came over here from the Ukraine in 1948 (not during the war as i thought)

One of the few links left but if you hover over Pembroke Dock*, you'll see that Amazon has a book on the History of it :)
* on my earlier posting ::)
Now it's not there :'(

-
Hi jui
and I was sure it was 1855 on the cert :'(
Have you tried for John's info on the Armed Forces Board. They may have info on the Royal Munster Fusiliers that might help and have you followed them on the 1891* census to check where John was born?
Gadget
* just checked - just says born Ireland :( :( :(
-
I cannot make out the writing on the certificate as it is so small. If I could read it I might be able to help as I live in Pembroke Dock.

Hi Lambkin - if you read through the thread, you'll see that we've probably worked it out - Hut Encampment and either Front or Trent Street.

Trust me to be late. ;D Anyway I have posted a link for Pembroke Dock history (for informative purposes only).
I don't know if you are from the area but PD was a large garrison town at one time as well as having the Navel Dockyard here, building ships.
-
;D
I only know a bit about PD (I'm from North Wales :))
The link looks really interesting and I'm sure jui will find some things there that might help.
Trouble is, she now has the Irish line to follow :-\

i have contacted someone (petmas) who knows more about these huts then me this is what he said about the huts in my area:~
They were very basic wood huts and some look to be canvas on wooden frames. Used for labourers on the Harbour & Breakwater sites.
hope this helps

HI Toni
Did he say anything about their use as army billeting?
I've done some Googling and I think it might be worth searching Wexford/Waterford/Cork for possible Johns :-\

no he didn't mention the army however i beleive they sprung up in wartime so would assume this was the original purpose
he is going to dig me out a picture.
