I am trying to find the Parents/siblings of my gg grandfather Robert McMillan. I know he was born in Belfast c1818. 1839 he married Jane Hamilton, also in Belfast, and their first child Martha was born there c1839. They moved to Govan, Scotland between 1839 and 1841 where they appear on the 1841 census. Can anyone help please?

To find Irish records you need to know their religion and where they lived, see what churches are in the area and then see if the records still exist. It is difficult, and sometimes impossible, to find records so far before the start of civil registration.
Do you know Robert's occupation?

Thanks for your reply. I have no idea where he lived in Belfast, I'm afraid. I suspect he was low church but am not sure. His occupation when he got to Scotland was stated as wood sawyer/journeyman. I have tried church records with no success and the censuses seem to be too late - 1841/51. I did find a christening record of a Jane Hamilton (the name of Robert's wife, also born in Belfast) for 15/04/1819 St Anne's Belfast, parents William Hamilton and Jane, but have no idea if this is the right person.

1901 is first complete census for Ireland. There are extracted bits of 1851 and 1841 from Pension Claims (c1909- ) but these are not by any means complete.

Thanks. I was afraid of that. I'll just keep searching!
