hi i looked at the tree! it is huge how are you going to print it on one piece of paper?

i didn't realise they were Emmas grandaughters til you said, but you are descended from Maud is that correct who was Emmas step daughetr and Samuel juniors half sister so making Samuels children and Mauds children cousins.
Confused ? .. i am

there was nothing clear cut for George Arthur, lots of Georges but not George Arthurs  :-\

perhaps someone should check the cwgc site for him

look at the tree David found, hepburn is just going to let us have some loose ends she want s to tie up and then get back to us.

we really need to find Ethel Amelia Tooth and George Arthur Key after the census that we alredy have (the year of which fails me at the moment) these are children of Emma Tooth nee French

hi

okay ..this is re: Thomas Lownds b 1816 = Elizabeth ? ...parents of Sarah jane Lownds b 1847

I hope I am not repeating ..need updated tree david (watching  movies)

1851:
Thomas Lownds head 35 farmer
Elizabeth wife 36
Ann Stringer 12 step daughter
Thomas Lownds son 8
Elizabeth dau 6
Emily dau 4
Sarah dau 4
Eliza 1

Marriage:
Elizabeth Stringer = Thomas LOWANS
dec q 1840
staffs
vol 17 p 168

whose marraige is this ?
Thomas Lownds = Sarah Keys
mar q 1844
Cheadle

deb Hi again

I see that in 1861 Thomas Lownds is a Joiner and Farmer... subsequent census have him as a joiner.

In 1851 he is a farmer with Elizabeth his wife and a stepdau Ann Stringer

I think this may be him in 1841:Thomas Lownds 25 Joiner Y
Elizabeth "  25 y
Elizabeth Stringer 20 Y

arrghhhh what's going on ... am I on the right path here ....  Is ann the step dau his illegitimate child  did the fisrt Elizabeth in 1841 die and Thomas married Elizabeth Stringer in Dec q 1840 ...geezzz that doesn't make sense because Elizabeth 25 is with him in 1841 ... okay ... i am going mad ... will have to rethink ...

Hepburn

where was Thomas Lownds in 1841? was he married or not?

a Thomas Lowndes m. Elizabeth Farr Q2 1840 Congleton
(Congleton is Staffs)

a bit further away another ThomaS Lowndes m. in W. Bromwich Q2 1840 to  either, Elizabeth Blocksidge, Maria Brain,. Sarah Stringer or Mary Stringer.

that George Key doesnt belong to you either Hepburn, i found him earlier but can't find him now.

Hi Toni

in 1851; Elizabeth the wife of Thomas was b Dilhorn Staffs. Ann Stringer it says ditto under the Staffs and then Stafford is written again ... I think Ann b c 1839 was most probably born in Dilhorn , if she is Elizabeth's daughter.

hence the phrase brother 'in law'

okay frederick William Shaw died 1882

I have :
Ernest Shaw

Edmund Shaw

can't find Edward ...so Edmund must = Edward, will recheck

BUT ...where was Edmund in 1881...he wasn't with them living with sampson and Agnes in 1881. he was b 1877 .... hummmm

hi i looked at the tree! it is huge how are you going to print it on one piece of paper?

i didn't realise they were Emmas grandaughters til you said, but you are descended from Maud is that correct who was Emmas step daughetr and Samuel juniors half sister so making Samuels children and Mauds children cousins.
Confused ? .. i am

there was nothing clear cut for George Arthur, lots of Georges but not George Arthurs  :-\

perhaps someone should check the cwgc site for him

i think only his birth cert will tell you who his paretns were as we cant see him with them in the census  :(

i can't find Rebecca Richards nee Finney anywhere in 1841/1851 (england and wales)

the Ann Child i found was listed as unmarried, our Ann was married oir she would have been named as Finney, was this a mistake by the enumerator or was it a different Ann Child?

I can find children for William Finney brother of Benjamin senior who appear to be the children of Thomas Finney and Alice Amphlet or William Finney  & Frances

I will list all the Finneys here (some you have already had) and you should be able to make sense of them:~

re Ethel Amelia Tooth b. 1884

i think we already have this however in 1901 there are two options for her

1) a lodger RG13 2923 110 26

2) a servant RG13 2612 10 12

i thought sje may have been the servant, as the famiyl did nto seem to be one of money and would she have been able to pay boaridng fees ? esp with her mother and two half brothers beign int he workhouse

you can find out about life in a workhouse on workhouses.org

however the lodger Ethel Tooths occuaption is Workwarehouse hand sewer roll factory, this would then lend her the money to pay for her living arrangements.

in either case she was still unmarried

Right sorry Hepburn for the interruption. I'm just so pleased to have made some progress with the Turners, a surname a bit like Smith.

I've just been trying to read through the whole thread and it is pretty big I haven't managed it yet but I did find some information in it that makes me belive that my tree is linked to this one.  Appologies if this has been said already but just in case I'll give the info I have.

My grandfather on my mothers side was George Marshall Key (1911-1974), son of Samuel Key (died 1957) and Naomi Gertrude Bennett (1887-1954) (still not 100 % sure of the Naomi as my aunt recalls she only ever knew her as Gertrude).

Anyway I know they had children called Hilda Key (Born 1920) and Mary E Key (Born 1915).  i also know that they had another daughter called Marjorie Key (1930-2003) which would have been my great aunty.  Wierdly enough Marjorie married my grandad on my dads side John Collier after my grandmother died.

If this is the same family then you should find Samual and Gertrude on the 1911 cencus boarding with gertrudes parents Thomas and Emma Bennett.  Also on the census is a George key who i belive to be Samuals brother and my grandfather is listed as Marshall Key, they would have been living at 40 Goddard Street, East Vale, Longton, Stoke-on-Trent.

Please let me know if i'm totally wrong on this though, If I am right then this is going to help me alot :-)

Many thanks Michelle

After a lot more research and the ordering of certificates I'm not around 98% confident that we are talking about the same family.

The one thing that stops me going straight to 100% is that I can't find a birth record for Samuel or George that seems to match.

I know on the last tree published on here Samuel's year of birth as 1891, the Census record from when he is in the work house supports that but every other record I have for Samuel supports a birth in 1888/89, either way I can't find his birth.  I tried searching under all of Emma's surnames (French, Hearne, Tooth...and Key) but nothing.

I did think that maybe they weren't registered as they were illigitimet, if that is the case could they have still been baptised???

My head is ready to explode on this one as it is the final piece of the puzzle.... or it was until I noticed that on one of the birth certificated of Samuels daughters (Lilian) it states Ex-Army as his profession, that would be  around 1920.  I checked the earlier births for his other children and they don't say anything about the army.  Searched the WW1 records but nothing (I know that most were destroyed), Wondered if it was anything that you may have heard about already?

Michelle
