Title: James PEARSON Ireland & Australia 1829
Post by: spruso on Friday 21 December 07 20:21 GMT (UK)
Hi
Looking for info on James Pearson who was born abt 1829 in Queens Ireland. He migrated (convict?) to NSW Australia and married Elizabeth Galloway at St.Andrews Scots Church, in Sydney on 14th Mar 1853. He died 27 May 1898 in Sydney.
Any info on his family and journey to Australia would be greatly appreciated. I have info on his Australian life.

Thanks in advance
Cheers

Hi Spruso,

Do you have his death certificate with an estimate of how long he had been in Australia?  Can't find him on the Port Jackson convicts CD.  Probably a bit young to be a convict.

Hi Andcarred,

I don't have the death certificate as yet. I only know his parents were James Pearson and Agnes Miller.  Do you know if Ireland has a similar site like the NSW BMD? I couldn't find one.

Thanks for you help

Hi Andcarred,
Found this on the Ancestry.com site.

New South Wales and Tasmania, Australia Convict Musters, 1806-1849
about James Pearson
Name:    James Pearson
Arrival Date:    1837
Vessel:    Priner George
Piece:    HO 10/34
Province:    New South Wales
Title:    General muster L-Q
Year(s):    1837
Estimated Birth Year:    abt 1817

That would make him 82 when he died. Unfortunatley I don't know James' age at death. It may be a bit too old.

Cheers

Hi spruso,
"..don't know James' age at death.."

Again, this is where the certificate of James' death is going to help you.
It will also give you a wealth of other useful information including how long he had been in Australia,  This in turn will narrow down the time frame for searching for his arrival.

The services of a transcription agent through the NSW bmd site reduces the costs of getting the certificate.    The details of these agents can be found on the site.  They are all satifactory in their service.

Hi Sparret,
Finally got the DC for James Pearson.
Place of Birth:  Queens, Ireland
His occupation was a butcher.
Parents names James Pearson, farmer, and mother ,Harvey ( First name unknown)
Time in the colony was 48 year
This would coincide with the arrival time of the James Pearson listed below who came from Queens Ireland. He could be a possibility but need to find more information

Suspect that 'Rathsarn' is Rathsaran in Queens County (there's no such place as Rathsarn).
There is a townland of Rathsaran Glebe (183 acres) in the civil parish of Rathsaran, Poor Law Union of Donaghmore, Barony of Clandonagh. However, the 'Rathsarn' in the passenger record could simply be refering to the parish of Rathsaran rather than that particular townland.

Civil registration of births, deaths and Catholic marriages in Ireland started 1864 (from 1845 for other marriages). There is no BMD site for Irish records.

Hi Spruso.Your James Pearson farmed at the townland of Grogan, civil parish of Rathsaran which is within the RC Parish of Rathdowney. The Harveys were in two townlands close by eg Knockeel and Ballybuggy . You are welcome to a local townland map if you would like to contact me directly. There is still a Pearson living locally who can be found if you log on to Eircom Phonebook.Bill.
