James Shotter born about 1806 ( 35 years old in 1841) .In the 1841 census there is an ANN ShOTTER living with him and his family .
In the 1851 census Ann is living with James's daughter mary Ann age 21 .Ann is noted as the grandmother and born in county in about 1768 !
Does anyone have records for Lurgashall ? or have these people in their tree ;D
I would love to know exactly when James was born and if anyone has any bright ideas about who Ann's husband was . There is a marriage for a William SHOTTER marrying Ann Kitchell 1808 but that seems too late . ideally the marriage would have been about 1798 .
Thanks for any info at all. I am doing this for friends.

Hi Debz,
There is only one marriage on the SMI of a male Shotter to an Ann but I think it's too early as Ann would have been about 18 but it's possible. Francis Shotter of Littlehampton to Ann Poling (otp) by banns 10/8/1786 at Petworth. The next marriage of a male Shotter to an Ann is the one you mention in 1808. It would appear that James was born about 1805, Lurgashall as that's what he states on the 1851 census, so unless they married after his birth.... ???
This is his marriage;
Lurgashall, West Sussex, 9 May 1829:
James SHOTTER, bach
Mary Ann WEST, sp botp (B)
Another possibility is this extracted baptismal record from the IGI;
James Shotter born 18/12/1800 baptised 15/1/1801 at Petworth s/o Ann Shotter, so James might be illegitimate. Something to consider as Petworth is only 4 miles from Lurgashall.
An Ann Shotter was baptised at Petworth 13/1/1770 d/o Edmund & Anne could be something could be nothing.

Thank you very much indeed for that ....even if i cannot research further i now have definate factual info.
i shall ponder over this ....18 years of age would be ok , more normal than 40 years old !!
i do think that James was born at Lurgashall so the Petworth /Ann Shotter may not be what i'm looking ......
just remembered that on the '51 census it says ...Ann Shotter pauper to ag lab widow - it has a W in the condition column :D so she had been married !!! ;D
Thanks you been very helpful....2 brains an' all that ;)

Don't believe everything that's written on the census ;) Ann might have put the story about that she had been widowed at an early age so try & think outside the box ;)

very true... it's just impossible to know for sure .... ???
ann would have been about 35 when she had James .... i can't see how i will know for sure...oh well
thanks again tho for your time and help

One avenue to explore would be to see if there was a Bastardy Order or Removal Order for Ann. I did have a look on the W. Sussex Poor Law database on their site but I couldn't access it so had a look at A2A but nothing came up there. Something is likely to be out there that will prove or disprove the theory, so keep looking :D

Hi Jane,
i did look at the Poor Law database but Lurgashall or petworth parish is not listed so i presume that the info is not available but thanks for that reference , i'm not au fait with the Bastardy laws etc

Ann Shotter born Bramshott 1780 to William Shotter and Eizabeth Levett, was the mother of an illegitimate son George born in 1802. He was my 3 x great grandfather. Ann never married.
It is not inconceivable that she is also the mother of James Shotter who also appears to be illegitimate

and as Petworth/Lurgashall is just a hop skip and jump from Bramshott, with Shotters as scattered all over Hampshire and Sussex as they were, two mother-only Shotter births to Ann in that short time frame has quite a strong possiblity of them being siblings.
We have dna matches to the descendants of Ann's brother via Ancestry testing.
There was another Ann Shotter also born in Easeborne in 1780 to a different branch of the family. I believe she did marry.
I found this post by accident on Google today whilst chasing old Shotters so I am sorry it took this long to delve into Rootschat for this part of the Family.
You haven't been online oin almost two years but maybe you will get this reply and if you do, please contact me at my general public email morticianz at gmail dot com with 'Shotter' in the subject line
Kind regards
