Title: Brummitts Row Lincoln
Post by: Alan7636 on Monday 21 January 08 20:52 GMT (UK)
Hi folks  :D

Seems ages since I last posted anything on here but this time I'm after a little local knowledge.

My mother was born in Lincoln in 1905 at 5 Brummitts Row and whilst I have a copy of the Ordnance Survey Map I've been unable to find the location on this even with a magnifying glass.

I suspect it may have been in in the area of St Martins, can anyone offer a clue or pinpoint the address for me and what is there now?

Many thanks

Alan

I have several 19th century maps of Lincoln but it isn't named on any of them :(

From the neighbouring roads/courts in censuses, I suspect it was somewhere in the area between Strait/Steep Hill and St Martins St.

This was actually in St Michael's parish, even though the place where the cars are parked at the bottom left was the site of St Martin's church.

Thanks Geoff

Following the route of the Census Enumerator was my next step and comparing it with my 1905 map was my next move if I drew a blank here.

Regards

Alan

Hi Alan,
I maybe way off the mark, but Brummitt's row , could have been named because Mr James Brummitt, a friut and poultry man, who had a business in Bailgate, and sold his goods far and wide ,
I know I have seen the place in Lincoln Registers. there is also a place called Brummitts court.
I will have a search about .

Hi Eilleen  :)

Many thanks for taking an interest.

Not only did James Brummitt have a Greengrocery business at 10 Bailgate in 1905 but at No. 15 Bailgate were Misses Lucy & Charlotte Brummitt with a Toy shop.

I've attempted to 'Walk' the Enumerators journey on the map but the area around The Straight, Steep Hill, Michaelgate and St Martins Lane with St Martins Street running in the middle was a maze of Courts, Alleyways, Yards & Rows in 1905 little of which survives today.

I have a feeling it could have been somewhere between Michaelgate and the upper end of St Martins Street as Geoff has suggested.

Many thanks for looking.

Alan  ;)

Alan,
in the 1897 directory for Lincoln, my great grandfather Tom Exton is listed at 29, Brummitt's Row.
I knew I had been looking for the place a long time back  ::)
I have not pinned it down to the very plot were the house stood,  :)
but I will  ;D
I think it was just a bit higher than the picture GeoffE gave you.  :)
in the directory it say's after the householders are named for Brummitt's Row,    here is Steep Hill return.

Back to my map's  ;D

I think it's that block just below the writing      BM 1126

Many thanks Eilleen

I too found it in the 1897 directory and in Akrills Directory of 1857 when the house my mother was born in, No. 5, was owned by Jane Brummit and William Tuxford, 'Drapers'

I agree it would seem to be the block of 'Back to Backs' below BM1126 and above St Martins Row.

Once again Cheers.

There is a Lincs FHS publication-

Directory and Census entries for the Steep Hill area of Lincoln 1885-1913, including map and illustrations.  (in the publications list)

Hello Alan7636
Just registered and came across your enquirey re Brummits Row in Lincoln.According to my sources my Mother Gertrude Maude Burt was born at that address on September 1 1904 and eventually married my Father John William Hackney.
My Grand parents on my Mother's side were David Burt and Amelia Caroline Burt.
Could it be we are related ?.

Have just returned from holiday and found that this subject that I started in Jan 2008 has been revived. :)

When I originally asked for details of the location of Brummitts Row I had assumed my mother had been born at number 5 on the 12 May 1905 as shown on her birth certificate but certificates are only as good as the informant supplying the right information and the registrar  entering the correct details. ::)

After checking the baptismal records in Lincolnshire Archives for the church of St Paul in the Bail where she was christened on the 4th June 1905 I am now 99% certain she was born at 5 Brummitts Ropery a small court yard situated just off of Westgate and directly under the Castle walls. All her maternal family lived around Westgate and Union Road and most were christened/married in St Paul in the Bail the local church, now sadly just a hole in the ground. My Grandparents were married in the self same church a year previously.

So Tony I’m sorry to say that you and I do not appear to be related.  :(

One interesting fact is that in Dennis Mills books ‘The Steep Hill Area of Lincoln 1885-1913’ & ‘The People of Steep Hill About 1900’   he shows that in Ruddocks Directory of 1905 5 Brummitts Row was occupied by one Alfred Beckett, labourer.
