Hi,
Does anyone know whereabouts in Sutton on Sea a house named Fairlawns stood - or better still have any photosgraphs of the house, or surrounding area?
A gentleman named John Henry Richards lived there in the 1920s and early 1930s - whether any of descendants stayed there after his death I do not know.
Hoping someone will be able to help.
Thankyou.
Paulene.

Paulene,
Don't know whether it's of any relevance, but current business directories have a builder (G. Houghton) at the address of Flat 4, Fairlawns, Park Road West, Sutton-on-Sea. Might be a large old house divided up into flats. Perhaps worth ringing them on 01507 441038.

Hi David,
Thanks for the advice. I did a web search and came up with he gentleman's mobile number. I rang but he was busy, so he told me to ring the number you have, and speak to his wife.
Couldn't get hold of her, so left a message - sadly no reply as yet.
I'll try again in a few days, in case they didn't pick up the message.
Good luck with your own research.
Kind regards,
Paulene.

Hi,
Pleased to say I have managed to contact Mrs. Houghton, who is being very helpful - hopefully I will recieve some photos of the house as it is today.
Sadly it has suffered the fate of many large houses and the garden has been sold as a building plot; the house has been converted into four or five flats (+ some unsympathetic alterations) - BUT at least it's still there!
I'm keeping the post going in the hope that someone may have a photo of the house in its' past glory, or perhaps memories of the John Henry Richards who built the house and lived there until his death in 1934.
Kind regards,
Paulene.

Hi,
A quick update.
Managed to visit Sutton on Sea at the end of August, and found 'Fairlawns' - looking a bit tired, but still intact, and at least still there!
Met Mrs Houghton, who has been very helpful. She sent me an old booklet on the history of Sutton on Sea. Although it does not show the house, it does show what Sutton on Sea must have been like in the earlier part of the twentienth century, with many old photographs.
My thanks to David for his help - it is appreciated.
Paulene :)
