Hi there,
I have never posted a message before, so hope I have put it on the right board........
In 1844 my GG Grandmother Mary Ann Bruce was born in Strichen,Aberdeenshire, on her birth record it says " William Bruce & Mary Aden 2 unmarried persons of this parish had a daughter Mary Ann.
I am sure this is my gg grandmother, I know she married John Grant who was 30 years older than her and on her marriage cert her parents are down as William Bruce and Mary Hadden but I can not find a marriage for William and Mary,I have come across a Mary Hadden and Ernest Bruce who wed in 1859, on the 61 census they have a 5 month old son also Ernest and a daughter Mary Ann, her age is down wrong to begin with, it says that she is 31 the same as her mother, but I payed to see it on scotlandspeople and she is 16, going by the fact that Ernest would of been about 11 when she was born I don't think he is her father, also on Ernest and Mary's wedding cert they are both down as single, I have hit that brick wall and wondered if some kind soul could point me in the right direction, I hope this all makes sense.

Hi Irene
Welcome to Rootschat :D
It looks very likely to me that Mary Aden/Mary Hadden is the same person and that she never married William the father of your Mary Ann. Whether Ernest Bruce is related to William remains to be seen.
Hopefully someone with knowledge of Scottish records will be able to point you where to go next.

Hi Jan,
Thanks for your reply, i forgot to say on my first post that one of the witness's on Mary Ann and John Grant's weddding cert was an Ernest Bruce, I know I can't prove it but I am thinking that he could of been her stepfather, I have even looked to see if Ernest's parents had a son called William, but to no avail.

Hi
I would also be thinking the Ernest Bruce on the marriage cert is her step-dad.
Have you had any luck finding Mary Hadden/Aden and young Mary Ann in 51? Any sign of a suitable William on any census?
Jan ;)

Morning Jan,
no Ive had no luck with them on the census, the nearest Ive got is Mary Haddon with child aged 6 but her name looks like margt, shame thought I had found them.

Hi Irene
I think I saw that family - the ones in Strichen? Mary Haddon 28? Sister to a Christian Haddon and Ann Rannie? Margt Bruce 6 listed as niece? Is that the ones?
I wouldn't discount them. Have you seen the image? If not could be a mistranscription. Otherwise maybe she was known as Margt? Perhaps to distinguish from Mum? Any I would investigate the family further if I were you - seems too much of a coincidence even though Mary's age is out.

Hi Jan,
yes I have looked at the image and it does look like margt, but you are right that she may of been called that, I will now go back to the census and chase the family up to see what I can find.

Let us know if you make any progress.
Good luck :D
Jan ;)
I've asked for this to be moved to the Scotland board so you may get more assistance - and unasked since you have posted there now ;D

Thanks Jan,

Hi Jan,
just to let you know, I have found Mary Hadden,it was the one that was with her sisters Christian and Ann ( Rannie ) a very nice lady called Kenjo found all the census years, I then checked for all theirs deaths and Mary's marriage to Ernest Bruce and the parents names were the same on them all.
I now need to find Mary Ann's birth father William, bit of a needle in a hay stack seems there were a lot of William Bruce's around the area.
Thanks for your help.
Regards
