Hi all,
Does anyone have access to the Bristol parish registers and wouldn't mind looking up a baptism for me, as I can't find the below person's birth in the civil birth indexes.
I'm hoping the baptism will show an age for the child, so I can hopefully then find him in the civil indexes to order his much needed birth cert .
I am also hoping that it will show an address for the parents and the occupation of father at the time of his baptism as I do not have the parents in any census bar one , they are nowhere to be found . It's been one of my major brick walls that I've had for a few years now
Joseph Henry Batten , baptised on the 10th Aug 1871. Parents Joseph Batten and Susanna(h) ( Nee Pattison)
( source is an extracted record from the IGI . According to the source on the IGI it is from one of these three churches of England in Bristol ; st Barnabas church, st Bartholomew's or st Clements church.
He also had a sister baptised on the same day as him ;Florence Rosina Batten which is also on the IGI , an extracted record from the same source ( she is my G grandmother)
Florence's Birth certificate I do have ( she was born 17th June 1871, her father Joseph was a carpenter at the time of her birth and they were living in 1 Goodhind st Bristol) . It doesn't have a time on her birth cert -so going by that it looks as if Joseph Henry and Florence are probably not twins, they were just baptised on the same day (plus there is no birth record for him in the indexes for the same quarter and year, and years that I can find, except one back in 1863 in Truro , which of course may be him- hence the much need for a baptism age ) - It's is a bit odd as I have the parents in 1871 census ( it's the only census that the two parents together can be found in )and they have no children with them - So either Joseph Henry Batten was somehow a twin of my g grandmother who like her was born just a few months after the 71 census , or he was much older than her and he must have been staying else where on census night.
Thank you for any help
Kind Regards :)

Have you got the reference for the 1871 census - I cant find Joseph and Susannah !

Joseph Batten married Susanna Jane Pattison in Plymouth in Jun 1862
Could this be young Joseph's birth?

Hi,
Thanks so much for the replies and your help looking for them.
It could very well be the one in Stoke D, or it could also be the one in Truro, or neither - hence my reason for wanting to see the baptism for an approximate age of Florence's brother ,Joseph Henry Batten before I go off on a wild goosechase and fork out for numerous Joseph Henry Batten's birth certs without much to go on regarding the family
In the 71 census there is a Joseph C (maybe a G) Batten age 2 in Stoke D . I think there may be a possibility that this could be Joseph Henry G Batten , born Stoke D on the BMD - if it is , it can't be mine as his mother is an Elizabeth.
The trouble is , I've never been 100% sure the couple in 1871 are Florence's and Joseph Henry's parents as where is their son Joseph Henry? ( I can't find him anywhere) - It most probably is them , the names fit( bar the susan instead of susanna(h) , and Joseph's occupation fits, but I don't want to assume anything without proof. I'd rather see them with their children in later censuses to prove that the couple in 71 are the right ones - but they are nowhere to be found in the later censuses.
If it is the right couple in 1871 , Susan Pattison can be traced back to 1861 living in Truro, and also in previous censuses I found them too ( birth place is still Plymouth on the 61) - her father is Henry and he is a coast guard, most of this Susan's family are born all over the place according to the census ( obviously due to the father's job), some of her siblings in Cornwall, other's in Isle of wight, her father London born, her mother Pembroke in Wales and susan herself Plymouth - so Susan's son Joseph Henry may have born in Truro ( as her parents were living there) as easily as being born anywhere else in the country , as that family moved around the British isles quite a bit
Susanna(h) Jane and Joseph Batten, plus their daughter Florence Rosina , or any siblings ( I only know of Joseph Henry) can not be found in any census after the 1871 up until 1901 - I've tried everything , from searching on all Florence's ( without a last name and searching on just Flo* just in case her Christian name is mistranscribed too) - searched on susan* ( just in case she remarried and they are going under a different surname) searched on Joseph too , it took me months of scrolling through all possibilities without any luck-
The only census I have Florence Rosina Batten in is when she has married and is living with her husband in 1901 in wales. Her family are a total mystery, the only paper fact about her family that I have is her birth certificate with her parents on it ( plus her marriage cert too) - I have had to rely on certificates only with this line. I've tried deaths , but with a name like Joseph Batten and Susanna Pattison who seem to move all over the place - it's a bit impossible to know which could be them.
I've been trying to track down Florence and her parents, and brother in1881 and 1891 censuses for a few years now without any luck , it would certainly sort out quite a few things .I don't think they are in either of them, I've tried all ways that I can think of of finding them - I have a suspicion carpenter ( Joseph's occupation) may be ships carpenter, it would explain why I can't find them
The Parish entry of the baptism of Florence's brother Joseph Henry Batten would be of great help, as quite a lot of them show the approximate age of the child being baptised - this would hugely narrow it down to which Joseph Henry Batten in the BMD's could possibly be mine.
Very Kind Regards :)

Hi Nashua,
Thank you very much, that was most kind of you. It's most appreciated!!
It's a pity about the lack of age .It's definitely them though, Florence's birth cert says Goodhind st too . Oh well I'll have to order all the Joseph Henry Batten birth certs one by one -hopefully I'll get the right one first off ( that's if he is one of them in the indexes . I hope he's not born overseas, or in another part of the British isles and none of them are him - that would be just my luck ! ;D)
Thank you again for your help and your time searching and looking at the record for me!
Very Kind Regards :)

Hi Cell
If you order from the GRO you can ask that they check parents name so if the reference you give doesnt match they will refund part of your money £3 or £4 I think. Will save a bit if you have several to try.

Hi Cell,
I am a bit late to your message as I only started doing my family research last year. Joseph Henry Batten born 1863 in Truro (St Just Port Loe) is my 2nd great grandfather. He was baptised much later in 1871 as his father Joseph was a carpenter in the navy. I am guessing his mother waited for him to finish service before baptising him. I have a lot of records pertaining to the Batten family. They moved around a lot too, which doesn't help in tracing them.
I would love to help more. Are you on ancestry? I have a family tree on there.
Best wishes,
M

P.S I think the reason Joseph Henry wasn’t on the 1871 census is because he may have been elsewhere. Possibly with Susanna’s parents in Cornwall. Florence and Joseph’s father Joseph died in 1877 in Pensford, Somerset. Joseph was born in Chew Magna in 1831 to Josias Batten and Elizabeth Perry.
The reason you can’t find Susan Batten (nee Pattison) is because she got remarried to a Richard Hughes and moved to Hopkinstown, Wales. I have her birth, death records and burial. I also have her in every census apart from 1881. I also can’t find a marriage record for her to Richard Hughes. She is definitely with him and her death record states Florence Rosina as present at her death, so it’s definitely her.
Florence and Joseph also had another surviving sibling. Her name was Ada, she was born near London Docks.
My gg grandfather, Joseph Henry Batten married Florence Ada Davies and he is on the 1891 census in Portsea Island. He is onboard HMS Briton in 1881 and that’s missing. He was in the a Navy like his father and in 1892 he moved to Durban and my great grandfather was born there. However Joseph Henry died of a diving accident in 1902 and my great grandfather was sent back to wales to live with his uncle in Neath. Florence Ada Davies my great great grandmother then remarried and moved to Canada and then Honolulu and died in San Francisco in 1937. I think the Battens just likes to move a lot :) haha!
Do let me know if I can give you more info and the records.
