Hi,
I am trying to work back on my grandfathers family tree, but have become totally stuck at his grandfather and don't know how i move on from here.
I want to get his birth certificate or even his marriage certificate, but have searched and have found too many options as I'm not sure where he was born or what his wifes name was. How do i narrow it down?
The things I know;
name - James New
son - Frederick George New b Sep 12 1888 married an edith clara cooper 5 Apr 1913. At time of marriage Fredercik George his son was living in little Faringdon, Lechlade, Gloucester. Frederick George his son & wife later moved to Swindon Wiltshire.
What would you do next? Is there something I have missed?
Any help very gratefully received!!

OK - well, one step at a time.
If the birthdate you have is correct for Frederick, then this looks like his birth registration: Frederick George NEW, Sep 1888 Midhurst 2b 379. There is nobody else matching his full name registered in 1888 or 1889.
The certificate should, if it's the right one, give you a full name (possibly including any middle names) and occupation for his father James and a name (including maiden name) for his mother. These details will help you to progress further.

The 1891 census shows

Sorry my computer decided to post this before I finished typing

Harriet 31 b ?Purbrite

Alice 8 b Monkton
Bessie 6 b Monkton
Frederick 3 b Monkton
Bertie J 1 b. Monkton
can't see any other Frederick's with father James of correct age.

You could always get the birth certificate
Sept 1888
Midhurst 2b 379
Frederick George New
This would give father's name and mother's maiden name. And would be a great help forward.

Hmmm...wrong name for Dad!
So now it's a question of how reliable the original information is - wonder if its source is Frederick's marriage certificate?

There's a duplicate thread on this:
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,287649.from1203687719/topicseen.html#msg1705268
I think they need to be merged so that we're not all doing the same work twice. done!

great idea - how would i do that though?
yes the info on his father was from his marriage cert
:)

I think this must be the birth of the Winterbourne Monkton boy:
Frederick George NEW Dec 1887 Marlborough 5a 87
Right name, wrong birthdate! What is the source of the information on your Frederick's date of birth?

The thread merging totally screwed up my editting of the Monkton census entry ..... must have been right in the middle of the d/base move ..
:(
-
Anna - a Sept birth could have been registered in the DEC quarter ...... ah, wrong year !

Ann - a Sept birth could have been registered in the DEC quarter ......
I know ;)
I meant wrong year - he's supposed to have been born in 1888 which would make it rather difficult for them to register him in 1887!
But perhaps over time his age slipped by a year or so (wish mine would :))

sorry - doorbell went!
the source of the date of birth is my grandfather, so may not be right i suppose. i found 2 james news - one married to a ruth and one to a charlotte, but the birth date didn't match. I just want to be sure i have the right one, but have no other info to draw on ???
p.s. yes - me too Anna ;) !

yep spotted that and amended ::) :P
-
I suppose James might not have been his first name? it could have been something James New couldn't it... I was given the impression they were from Lechlade, but can't find that at the moment...

If it's the Winterbourne Monkton lad, he was in Preshute, Wilts (as Frederick G New) with his widowed mother and siblings in 1901: RG13/1924 folio 97 p5
and this looks likely to be his parents' marriage
James NEW
Harriet FISHER
on same page, Mar 1879 Marlborough 5a 95

oh...thanks Anna. off to have a look at that.. :)

what is the best way to find records after the 1901 census?
My grandfather had said he remembered having family in Whelford Fairford, but he wasn't born until 1915 so it wouldn't have been until later on. Just wondered if that might give some more clues for names to look for further back and maybe places of birth too? :)
