Post by: scully on Saturday 23 February 08 12:08 GMT (UK)
Hi,
I am looking for a James and Margaret Wood in the 1871/1891/1901 cenus. Also a May mills in the 1891 cenus aged about 13. Also a John  and Jane  Scullion in the 1901 cenus and a Thomas and Margaret Scullion in the 1901 cenus. A Hugh and  Agnes Kennedy in the 1891/1901 and a William Young aged about 18 in the 1891 cenus. Sorry there is so much but anything will help. They may all be in the St Quivox and Newton-on-Ayr area.

Hi, LL
Thanks for the information on my other post. Do you have the ages of the Balmer children on the cenus as i have no marriage for Thomas,s daughter  Margaret. Also the age of James in the 1901 Cenus as i have no marriage for him and i think that he is Margarets brother born 1871. The 1871/91/01 Census is for a James Douglas Wood/ Margaret Scrymgeuor Duncan married 4/6/1860 Ayr. Children are Robert 1861/William F 1863/ John 1869/ Crawford 1872/Jessie K 1873.  The 1901 cenus is for a John Scullion /Jane Dillion married 8/4/1892. No need for May mills in the cenus as i found out she died at the end of 1881. As for John Scullion young in the 1901 cenus all i have is in the posts above.

Not tackled these two yet.  Would they be in the same house or seperate?  Are they all in Ayr as well?  Do you have approximate ages for them?  Need to narrow down William Young so any more details on him will help.
A Hugh and  Agnes Kennedy in the 1891/1901 and a William Young aged about 18 in the 1891 cenus.

Hi, LL
Thanks for all the information , I never expected this much information.
You need not bother about the Kennedys . All i have on William Young is he was born on 7/5/1872  Glasgow but moved back to St Quivox by 1881. His parents were William John Young/ Elizabeth  Scullion. Perhaps he Married Young. Its the same with his brother Samuel born 29/12/1874 don,t know what happened to him after the 1901 cenus .Perhaps they moved away from Scotland.  Regards

Hi, LL,
Thanks once again for the info. I was wandering if you would be able to find the marriage of a William Mc Phee to a Hannah Docherty Young and any Children. Hannah was born on the 27/8/1890 St Quivox and died 7/3/1965, Ayr her parents were William John Young and Elizabeth Scullion. All i know about William is i think his parents are a James McPhee and Mary Ann McLeary And he died on the 31/8/1949 Ayr. I would quite understand if you could not do any more as you have given me far more information than i expected. I am extreemly grateful for what you have allready given me.

Here is what I Found.  I have received a lot of help from others in my own tree quest.  I am now playing the great wall of Ireland game with my tree so it feels satisfying to help others while I wait for the wall to give a little. My tree has many coming from Ayrshire and in helping others I find their trees connecting to mine sometimes which is really satisfying.

marriage of a William Mc Phee to a Hannah Docherty Young and any Children.

Hi, LL,
Thanks again for the info. Is your tree related to mine at all. I am also having problems with Youngs, Scullions and  the Hendries all coming from Ireland. Its like William Young  born in Ireland in about 1850 and married in Ayr in 1868. I Know his parents were  an Andrew Young and his mother was Sarah  Smith on his marriage But  her name was Agnes Smith on his death Certificate. and she was dead when he married. Its not knowing where in Ireland he was born or wether he came to scotland with his parents or if he had any siblings he came with. Its hard to think he came on his own. I Know the James Scullion/ Margaret Brown were  married in County Antim in 1844/1845 and who thier parents were but thats as far as i have got.

I know exactly what you mean about not knowing how and when they came from Ireland.  At least they list the County in Ireland on some of your relatives.  I had no clue and it took a lot of time to find some hint of where in Ireland they came from.  Is there any more information you are trying to find in Ayr?  Our trees have not crossed yet.

Hi,LL
Thanks again. Looking for info on a John douglas Hendrie born about 1888, His parents were John Hendrie & Mary Mc llvoy. Thats all i know about him before he got married. I know he married Margaret Brown Young on 17/9/1903 and i have the dates of his children,s births from1904/1922, and i know Margaret Youngs part of the family. I don,t know when John & Margaret died. i hope you don,t mind me asking you about  a problem i have come across. I have a Mary Scullion born about 1848 in St Quivox , her parents were James Scullion & Margaret Brown. I have found a marriage of a Mary Scullion to Thomas Fitzimmons 9/9/1867 St Quivox, but it says her parents are Thomas Scullion & Elizabeth Brown. Do you think it could have been written down wrong as everything else seems to fit.

Thanks again , I am so grateful to you for sorting out the Mary scullion for me. Is there any chance you could find a marriage or death for a Janet Scullion born about 1852 St Quivox. Her parents were a James Scullion& Margaret Brown. I don, t want to push my luck with you as you have been so helpful.

Janet disappears between the 1861 and 1871 Census.  She shows up as a 9 year old on the 1861 Census then on the 1871 Census she is not in the house (but James and Margaret  have two of the Fitzsummons Grandchildren living with them  - Annie 2 and Thomas 5 month).  No deaths between 1861 and 1871 for her age range and no marriages that are her.  She just vanishes.

No worries about pushing your luck.  I will let you know when I am done.  If you can help me with some records in England let me know as we can exchange favours.

Hi,LL
Thanks again. The only problem with getting any information in England is there is only the basic details on the certificates. There is only St Caths which gives you a year and part of the year when the B.d.m,s  occurd  then you have to send away for certificates.  I wish it was more like Scotland for the information you can get on certificates.

Hi,LL
Thanks for the info. I only had 7 children Robert  & Charlote. I looked on the 1841 Freecenus and found Robert and Charlotte, I had Robert born St Quivox but on the cenus it says he comes from England. Also on the cenus with them was Alexander & Cathrine Hood but it says Catherine was 25 so maybe she lied about her age when she married as i have her born in 1822. Could you look for Marriage of Alexander Wood  b,1838 parents Robert and Charlotte. Also the deaths of James Mills & Marion Wilson after 1891.

Hi LL
I have James Wilson born about 1833 and Marion Wilson born 20/12/1837. Marions parents were William Wilson and Isabella Lindsey I hope. The reason i say that is i was following the wrong parents for Charlotte Douglas but thanks to you giving me the the name of her son Robert  Crawford Wood. I found them on the IGI Pedegre chart with his parents, grandparents, and great grand parents which were different to what i thought. Could you find the marriage of John Youngand Mary Colquhoun in Dalry  they had a son John Young born about 1861,he died on the 16/5/1863 Dalry.

I still end up with 8 James Wilson with that birth year +/- 1 year.

For Marion I end up with 3, none of which looks right:
Marion Campbell Wilson d 1857 age 19 Irvine
Marion Wilson d. 1873 Ayr age 36 (Illegitimate Mother Mary Wilson)
Marion Sillars Wilson d. 1914 age 77 Mauchline (parents John Sillars and Martha Calderwood)

I did much better on the marriage:
31 Dec 1858 Dalry
John Young age 19 Coal Miner Bachelor
Residence Den Dalry
Father John Young Labourer deceased
Mother Janet Young maiden name McCalhem
married
Mary Colquhoun age 19 Mill Worker Spinster
Residence Den Dalry
Father William Colquhoun Coal Miner
Mother Mary Colquhoun maiden name Bell
Witness Allan Gilmour
Witness John White
They show up in the 1861 Census living with Mary's Parents:
Dalry 4 Brick Row
William Colquhon Head age 44 coal Miner born Lanark Clareston
Mary wife age 43 born Lanark Carluke
John Young Son in Law age 21 Coal miner born Ayr Gateside
Mary Young Dau age 21 born Lanark Shotts
Sarah dau age 19 Reeler Flax Mill born Dumbarton

Still curious on where the Crawford comes from (Robert Crawford Wood)?

Hi,LL
Thanks for the onfo,  Sorry I noticed i put James Wilson on the last post instead of  James Mills.
Could you look for any info on these marriages i got of the IGI, Alexander Wood/ Jane Whitehouse on 19/4 /1864 Ayr. Also Charlotte Douglas/Thomas Curdie on 26/12/1859 Kilmarnock. I think her parents are William Wood/ Janet Manson Married 21/5/1847 Monkton. Is it to early to find the information on Williams marriage of 1847 , I am hoping that Wiliam is the son of   Robert Wood and Charlotte Douglas. It is funny where the Crawford comes from, His brother had a son called Crawford but i have not come across the name any where else. I have Roberts Grandparents as Charles Douglas/Margaret Ferguson and Charles parents as Christopher Douglas/Christan Brown. William Wood/ Catherine McDonald. Maybe Crawford is somthing  to do with one of them.

Please indulge me on the Crawford connection.  I have a lot of MI's and OPRs for the area and am looking through them for the surnames to see if I can figure it out.  How certain are you on the g parents and gg parents of Robert Crawford Wood?

In Ayr Auld Kirk there is a intersting MI:
Erected by Robert and Thomas Wood in memory of their bro William d 22 Sep 1867 aged 61.  Charlotte Douglas d 10 Aug 1840,  Janet McGeachin d 11 Feb 1859.  Wives of Robert Wood.  Also his children Marion (wife of James Hendrie) d 9 Sep 1869 age 41.  And two sons and five daus d young.  Also children of Hugh Wood - Mary Gibb d 13 May 1863 aged 4 yr 6 mth.  David Moffat d 30 Oct 1863 aged 4 mth.  Robert Douglas d 10 Jul 1864 aged 3 yr.  MArgaret Kerr d 21 Jun 1872 aged 10.5 mth.  The above Robert Wood d 28 May 1875 aged 76.  Also Willie d 16 Sep 1880 aged 7 yr 3 mth.

This may also give you a clue out of the OPR's

There were a lot more OPR's when I was going through them last night for Wood.  Because these dates are all pre census that is about all you have to go on other than MI's.  If you wish me to continue looking through the OPR's and MI's It would be no problem now that I have dug them out.  Just let me know area , name and approx dates.  If you can break it down by family it really helps. I can also do a broad search for surnames and let you figure out the pieces :)

I will break this last request into sections.  First:
Could you look to see if James Mills and Marion Wilson are in the 1901 cenus. I have them in the 1891 Cenus in Newton on Ayr with 2 Grandsons James Mills aged 9 and John Mills aged 6 but i Don,t Know who,s Children they are.
The only James Mills that fits the age range was:
Birth Cert 17 Dec 1881 Newton Ayr
James Carson Mills
73 Main Street Newton Ayr
Father Robert Mills House Painter Journeyman
Mother Isabella Mills MS Carson married 28 Dec 1846 Kilmarnock

There is only on John Mills that fits the age range as well:
Birth Cert 19 May 1885
John Campbell Mills Illigitimate
100 Main Street Newton Ayr
Mother Marion Mills Domestic Servant
I found nothing on the 1901 census
THe 1881 Census has:
79 Main Street Newton on Ayr
James Mills Head married 48 carter born Ayr, Ayr
Marion Mills Wife 47 born Newton on Ayr
Susan Mills Daughter 10 Scholar born Newton on Ayr

I also have another Marion Mills that could be their daughter:
10 Beresford Terrace
Ambrose Bara head 31 Artist and Photographer born England
Lily Bara wife 30 born England
Mary Manning Wifes Cousin 20 Photrgaphers Assistant born England
Marion Mills Servant 20 Gener Domestic Servant Born Newton, Ayr
William White Father in Law Widowed age 70 born England
I did find a son for James Mills and Marion Wilson:
Robert Mills born 25 Dec 1853 Newton on Ayr
Robert Lawful son to James Mills and Marion Wilson was born on the 10th and baptised 25 December

Hi,LL
I managed to get the deaths of James Mills and Marion Wilson. I sent to the Registery  office, they died in 1905/1906. Their Parents were Robert Wilson and Margaret Spiers, And John Wilson to Margharet Cruickshank. I Think i  found  Robert Mills and Margaret Spiers in the 1841 Freecenus, if its the right ones it looks they also came from Ireland . Can,t seem to get away from Ireland.

Title: Re: 1871/1891/1901 Cenus
Post by: jonn on Sunday 13 April 08 10:03 BST (UK)

Hello Scully,

No not related, you said that you think you found Robert Mills, and Margaret Spiers, on the 1841. census, was that the couple living Mill Street, and Robert, is 45 Years, and a Carter, if so i also think this is them.

There are no births on the IGI. that i can see for this couple, there is however one birth on Scotlandspeople, and its the first child from the marriage, John Mills, born 28/Nov/1829, St. Quivox, Ayr.

This fits in with this census, also the couple were married there 1828.

When you move on to the 1851. census, Robert, and Margaret, are still in Ayr, address 306 High Street,

Mills Robert, Head. M. M. age 56 years, Carter, Born Ireland,
Mills Margaret, Wife, M. F. age 50 years, born Ireland,
Mills Robert, Son,   age 12 years, Carter, born Ayr, Ayrshire,
Mills George, Son, age 10 years, Scholar, born Ayr, Ayrshire.

Because the family only registered one birth John, there is a wee clue to link them to your family, the son George, aged 10 years.

By 1861, this George, aged 20 years is living with what i think is your James Mills, and his wife Marion Wilson.

The 1861. Census Index, shows,

Mills James, age 28 years, Ayr, Newton on Ayr,
Mills Marion, age 30 years, Ayr, Newton on Ayr,
Mills George, age 20 years, Ayr, Newton on Ayr,
Mills Robert, age 7 years, Ayr, Newton on Ayr,
Mills Margaret, age 4 years, Ayr, Newton on Ayr,
Mills Elizabeth, age 3 years, Ayr, Newton on Ayr,
Mills Isabella, age 1 year, Ayr, Newton on Ayr.

This of course is only the index and does not give relationships, you would have to check the original census to see the relationship of those on it, but there is no other George Mills, that age or near it in the whole of Ayrshire, in 1861.

Regards,
Jonn.

Hi, LL,
Thanks, Any chance of finding the death of Mary Moffat"nee" Gibb after 1857 she was married to David Moffat a Seaman who died before 1857 which perhaps is to early to find. Also the marriage of
John Brackenridge to Marion Wright, They had a son Daniel in about 1879. Also the marriage of a Waistel Cooper to i think a  Margaret/ Isabella/ Agnes or Jane Mills after about 1872 as on their mothers  Marion Mills death certificate it says present was Waistel Cooper, son in law.

Hi, LL
Thanks for trying, I have no idea when David Moffat was born. I can,t find his family on the 1841 or 1851 cenus . All i know is he was a Master Mariner married to Mary Gibb in July 1818 in Ayr.  I have just checked Mary his daughters marriage  of 1857 and it says he was deceased then. I Have no idea
how many were in his family. Could you find the birth of John Douglas Hendrie about 1880 and the marriage of his parents a John Hendrie and Mary McAvoy.

Scully

Here is everything I found on Moffat that may or may not be connected:
1794 David Moffate son of  John Moffate weaver and Janet Lockie his spouse was born 1794 bapt by Robison ?? Minister Kilmarnock

It does not list the date of birth.  I suspect he was born out of wedlock but they got married to have him baptised possibly?  This is in the Opr’s between April 3 and April 21 so the baptism date would be between these.

I also found another son to the John Moffate above:
578/9 Old Parochial Register - Ayr -- From 1-Mar-1766 to 31-May-1820
Robert MOFFATE, Died 18-Oct-1793; Age 1y4m, Son of John Moffate (weaver). Additional information :- Cause of death given - small pox

And Moffat in Kilmarnock
597 Laigh Ch Kirk Sess NAS - Kilmarnock -- From 16-Oct-1783 to 31-Dec-1799
Margaret MOFFAT, Died 30-Oct-1797; Age 2, . Additional information :- Cause of death given - scarlet fever

In Ayr Auld Kirk is this headstone which may just confuse matters or be a clue for you?

Have not found any more children as of yet for John Douglas Hendrie and Margaret, but in the 1881 census they live at 88 Cross Street St Quivox and there is a Ann Hendrie with daughters Mary age 14 and Bella age 11 at 41 Cross Street.

I found another interesting MI as well:

Hi, LL
Thanks again. Crawford seems to have popped its head up again, When i was Checking through my tree i realised on the marriage 1876 of Isabella Carson to Robert mills it said her mother was Mary Campbell but on her death 1889 it said her mother was Marion Crawford. Isabella was born about 1855, would it be possible to find her Birth. Could you also find the marriage of Richard Harold Townsend to Margaret Dickson Scullion before 1932. and the marriage of Hugh Dillon and Elizabeth Corbet, they had a daughter born about 1873.

Isabella Carson is an interesting one.  I found no birth cert for her under any mother.

I did find a marriage cert for James Carson and Marion Crawford Nov 18 1838 Penninghame Wigtown

The 1841 Census shows
1841 Penninghame/Wigtown
James Carson head age 40
Margaret age 40
Hellen 15
Agnes 11
Mary 5
James 3

The 1851 Census Penninghame Wigtown
James Carson age 52 grocer Merchant
Mary Carson age 37 Merchants wife
?? Carson son age 10
Sarah Carson daughter age 9
?? Carson son age 7
William Carson son age 4
Ellen Carson age 6 months

No birth certs for any of the children to be found

Marion 2

In the 1851 Census there are 5 James Carson all in Wigtown with seperate families

I then tried to find the other children's brith certs and found James in Wigtown Father James Carson mother Margaret McDowall
Marion birth Cert shows father James Carson mother Grace Muir

So either the certs I found are not from your James Carson or he went through a lot of wives.

Hi, LL
Thanks again for the info. Regarding  Isabella Carson, on her marriage in 1876 it said her father was a grocer and that her mother Mary Campbell was dead. On her death in 1889 She was living in Perth and it said her father was a Tea merchant and her mother Marion Crawford was also dead and that   it was reg; by a John Mc Dowall a brother in law.So perhaps James did marry a few times. Could you look for the death of Robert Gemmell married to Catherine Niven, He was a Fisherman and i think he died between 1871 and 1880. The marriage of Janet Scullion around 1872, parents James Scullion and Margaret Brown. the marriage of James Sheridan and Ann Connelly, they had a son James Sheridan About 1882.
