Hi,
I am doing a one name study of the Rossiter family and am looking for information please about the parents and siblings of Amelia Rossiter baptised on December 12th 1839 at Sturminster Newton.
Mother's name is Phillis ( maiden name unknown).
Any information would be greatly appreciated please. TIA.
Best wishes

Hi,
Now - where to begin
Can't see Amelia Rossiter or variation anywhere in 1841 or 1851.
Suspect she is illegitimate as no father given on that extracted record.
There is a death registered for Amelia Rossiter qrt ending March 1840 in Sturminster but no age recorded.
There is a marriage registered qrt ending September 1843 in Sturminster for a Phillis Rossiter to either John Dowding or Isaac Pearcy.
There is a 1851 census entry for Phillis Percy married to Issac Percy living in Sturminster with children but no Amelia but with brother in law recorded as Thomas Rossiter.
Phillis is recorded as born 1813, Sturminster Dorset

The only Phillis Rossiter on the 1841 is recorded as born 1818 and is living The Common Sturminster together with Samuel Clark age 56. Both born in Dorset.
As you know - with the 1841 no other information is given and no relationships shown.

Hi Tricia,
Many thanks for that.
You could well be right that Amelia was born illegitimately in 1839 and died in 1840.
Given the marriage in 1843 I'm not sure if Isaac Pearcy was the father and married her later or whether the father was a completely different person.
Best wishes

Hi Tricia,
Just had a thought. Can you post the 1851 entry please as I may be able to find Thomas in my database?
I have a Phillis born 1813 who is daughter of Benjamin and a Phillis born 1818 who is daughter of John both born in Sturminster Newton.
Maybe I can identify a link.
Best wishes

Well, there may be a clue on the birth certificate or there may not be.
Maybe Mr Clarke was the father - she seemed to like older men ;). Isaac was recorded as 45 in 1841 and 59 in 1851
Sometimes we just aren't meant to know!!

Hi jebber,
Thank you for that. I didn't realise that there was an 1801 Census.
Do you know what the numbers mean please?

We are lucky that there is an informative 1801 census for Sturminster Newton, most of them were simply head counts. I transcribed the SN one some years ago.
They are just the schedule numbers.

Hi jebber,
Thanks for that.
As a matter of interest are there any other censuses between 1801 and 1841 please?

There was one every ten years, but I don't know how informative they were, or if any have survived .
