Dorset Ancestors is a site I check up on occasionally; its not as wide ranging, obviously, as RootsChat, but I've had a few useful bits of help in the past.

So I was horrified  to read this:-

Quote
Throughout 2007 we have been plagued by people joining the forum with the sole intention of posting misleading messages intended to promote the sale of all manner of pills, tablets and worse.

We have stopped all of these bogus messages reaching the forum but recently we have been dealing with over fifty such attempts every day and it takes time to delete their details from our system and they are a constant distraction.

The forum is at the heart of our service so it is with much regret that we have to announce the suspension of the web-site and our free to use service until further notice.

How can people do this sort of thing ?  I was sickened ...

That is really sad Lydart.  I suppose I am not that surprised (given the amount of rubbish turns  up in my junk mail folder) but it represents a great loss to researchers.  I wonder how much junk Rootschat has to fend off?

I guess we need to keep saying a big THANK YOU  to the RC moderators who keep this site 'clean' from people who just want to mess up others research and pleasure.

THANK YOU MODS !!   You are a very special bunch !

I had been a regular contributor to that site and had posted hundreds of messages covering in detail names such as LOVELL
and VALLANCE etc,  I also posted pictures of long gone relatives.
Therefore, I was not amused when I found out the site stopped.

In the past, there was a flurry of this sort of stuff, but thanks to Trystan's wizardry, very little gets through nowadays.  (I really hope I'm not tempting fate here  :-\ )

It is ridiculous the lengths some people go to trying to make money. The internet is a wonderful tool, but sometimes is hijacked by the unscrupulous elements in our society.
In regard to junk in your e-mails, I have successfully blocked all bar occasional spam. You can set up message rules in your e-mail program, but this only stops about 80%. I also use a free program, Mailwasher, which you use to "vet" your e-mails first. It is very easy to use, and very successful.

Darren

Does any Dorset person (Nanny Jan for e.g. ?) know how it might be possible to access the info they had and the articles they published on the net ?  I remember reading an interesting one about Dorset button makers, and wanted to read it again as I've got one !

I'm a Londoner transplanted into Dorset!   I found a few articles just by "googling" .......  Dorset button makers.

Sorry I can't give any more help.

Lydart.........handsome chap your dad!

There is still an email link to the site; perhaps they can send the articles to you?

I understand they were made in cottages by 'out-workers' and sold in batches in the markets; what used to be called pin money, I suppose, for the wives of the ag.lab's !

Hi Lydart,

You might try looking up to see who the owners of the site are - you can do a WHOIS to find the registrar.  Almost always apart form a physical address and telephone number, you should see an email contact address.

Hope you have luck.  It's really bad when these spammers ruin things.
I wish them all the nasty things this world has to offer...

I did a lookup Lydart.
It doesn't give an email or telephone for the owners, only for the registration company - that might be better than nothing if you can't get anywhere with the postal address, which is there.
Good luck.
Tony

PS: Looks like the domain is set to expire soon too.  I wonder if they are going to renew it, I hope so, because you know what will happen if they don't... some spammer will buy the domain and turn it into a spam, virus or porn site...   Maybe RC members should club together and pay the $10 (yes US$ - about 5 pounds) to register it...   I would do it if I had time, and it would be nice if I would snag the data too to keep it up and running.   Just needs some good email filtering probably...

Good information, wish somebody would obtain the site
with a Dorset focus.
