I am trying to find a marriage for John Southon and possibly a Jane between 1849 and 1853 in Kent can anyone help me please? Poppyann
-
Hi
Do you have any more info on John/Jane..BDMs or any cencus info.. :)
Jane
-
John went to Australia in1853 and with him was a Jane Sothon and brothers Thomas and Gabriel. I think they would have been married before they left England. John was born and lived in Kent
-
Cant find a Gabriel Southon (any spelling - I just keyed in Gabriel) living in Kent in 1851. So perhaps they did not live there before they left.
Have you got them on 1851 anywhere?
Do you know their parents names? approx year of birth for John?
-
I couldn't find any of them on 1851 census either. They went to Australia on the ship called the Kent in 1853 to Victoria port B. Thanks lizdb. Regards Ann
-
PS John was born in 1820 in Capel Kent. Poppyann

There's a Jane SOUTHON living in Benenden in 1851. She's aged 22, married but not with her husband (unless Owen is her husband but he is listed as James' nephew). She's living with her uncle James SHOOBRDGE, a retired bricklayer.
There's also a whole family of SOUTHONS next door but no John, Gabriel or Thomas.

Strange how there is no sign of the 3 brothers in 1851..I found their mother Maria and sister Mary in Ottam in Kent on the 1851 but none of the others.. :( :(
Jane
-
Can you give us the census reference for Maria and Mary?
-
1851
HO107/1615/343/8-Maria Southern-Mary is not indexed but she is on the image
There is also a marriage in 1850-Cranbrook for a Jane Shoobridge and on same page is Owen Southon.
Jane
-
I've found them now - in Tudely. Maria & Mary SOUTHERN.
-
There is also a marriage in 1850-Cranbrook for a Jane Shoobridge and on same page is Owen Southon.
Jane
So that eliminates her. ???
-
There were 5 sons (Stephen, Henry, Thomas, John & Gabril) on the 1841 census but I can't see any of them in 1851. ??? Perhaps they had joined the army?
-
Me neither Bearkat its all very strange all the boys missing... ??? ???
-
Looks like the other sister Dorcus Southern died.

Have you investigated the possibility that they went to Australia earlier but then came back before emigrating for good?
I haven't been able to find a marriage for John & Jane either. ???
-
Brother Stephen is married by 1851 and is still living in Capel
HO107/307/15-Stephen Southan
Im not sure whether Poppyann has these details but if you do want them Poppyann let me know and I will be happy to post full details

Must admit Bearkat Im beginning to think along the same lines about them having gone earlier as they are nowhere to be seen.
Im stumped!!!!

There are some interesting SOUTHON wills
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~mrawson/extr9.html
One mentions "Stephen Southon, Henry Southon, Thomas Southon, Caleb Southon, John Southon and Gabriel Southon, the 6 sons of my late deceased son Henry"
-
Wow Bearkat that sure does make interesting reading..I suppose one idea would be that the monies that were left to them would have paid their fares to Australia ??? ???
Jane
-
Thanks bearcat, yes that is my Southon family. I knew that Henry was the father of Stephen father to the boys who went to Australia. Poppyann
-
I somehow agree that they probably weren't in the country then ..........
Thomas age 25 together with Caleb 18 (farmers from England) arriving in New York 13 Mar 1846 on the "Prince Albert" from London
John age 21 (wheelwright) together with Caleb age 20 (wheelwright) arriving in New York 13 Nov 1847 on the "Rob Peel" from London.
Could this be the same family ie. were they back and forth to the US with their new found wealth before going to Australia?
Poppyann, do you know anything else about Jane and in what order were they listed on the passenger lists - I assume it would be husband, wife etc.. ???
Casalguidi :)
-
That's an interesting find. :D
Looks as if they decided the prospects were better in Australia than America!
-
casalguidi, I know from information received that John did marry a Jane, on the ship list the order is Gabriel, Jane, John and Thomas.poppyann
-
bearcat thank you for your information very interesting isn't it.poppyann
-
Ive just noticed that Caleb stayed in the US as ive just found him in the 1870 New York cencus with wife Elizabeth and daughter Maria
Jane

Thanks Sisterjane for the info on Caleb. My original search started with Stephen brother to Caleb etc. I wondered why I couldn't find his brothers after the 1841 census now I know why. Many thanks to all who have helped me in my search. poppyann

Stephen SOUTHON's will gives so much information. There are links to the village of Marden.
Marden History Society have a great website
http://www.mardenhistory.org.uk/peoplemaster.htm
with indexes to baptisms, marriages burials and M.I.s. There are several entries for the name SOUTHON.
-
Thanks bearkat and Sisterjane. I didn't know there was a Caleb Southon and haven't found birth information yet. I know the father of the Southon brothers was Henry b 1791 in Capel according to the 1841 census, can't find a birth or baptism for him. According to the information you gave to me bearkat Stephen was Henry's father in the will information, I can't find any record of him either. Can anyone help me please.poppyann

Baptisms for Tudeley & Capel 1702 - 1870 are on the IGI as are marriages 1663-1683 & 1702-1812 but I can't see your SOUTHONS. :(
There are a couple of Stephen & Henry SOUTHON baptisms on the Marden Index but sadly no dates are given.
You could ask for more details but there is a charge, see:

Have you seen this? :o

Thanks again for all of your help. The story was wonderful. I hope you enjoyed it as much as me. The grandfather in the story called Snowdon I think was William. I have seen a copy of the will and he leaves his money to his grandchildren. When doing a search for the birth of William and found one b in Lympne in Kent but I ruled it out thinking it was to far away, After reading the story about Mommy Marsh- should be Romney Marsh I realised it was him after all. Now I can't find it. poppyann
-
It should have been Stephen not Willam.Poppyann
-
It's such an amazing story! but how do you find out who wrote it?
-
Yes, what an amazing story - how lucky is that ;D
So I guess we know now that John married a Jane FINDLAY - probably in Canada :)
Casalguidi :)
-
We haven't found that marriage...
:)
but we have lots on Caleb

Now that I have read more of the oral history I see that it was written by young Caleb's half-sister from Caleb senior's second marriage.
The second youngest son of the six sons of Henry was Caleb, who first married Louisa Elizabeth Harris 1853 in England...(who died of consumption in Canada) He married Elizabeth Boorman in England in 1868 ..moved to U.S. for a time, then back to Canada...

following the link in Reply # 35 above to the immigration to Canada board...there is more on the family in Canada. J.J.

There are some more SOUTHON wills among the Archdeaconry Court of Canterbury Wills on the Kent Archaeological Society Site.

Just found this site and registered.
John Southon and Jane Findley were my great great grandparents I have copies of some of the relevant documents which I will transcribe later.
John married Jane (of Albany, NY) in Cobourg Canada and arrived in Australia in 1853 as noted with his two brothers. A lithograph of the 1853 "Kent" is available. They and their siblings were not left a large sum by their late grandfather Stephen (they were sons of his dead younger son), most of the family lands went to his eldest son, Stephen jnr.
The Canadian book referenced is not entirely accurate.

Ooooh! this story continues. :D
Welcome to Rootschat Marden.

Hi Martha, if you do a search for kent wills you will see the will of Stephen Southon snr. Poppyann

Martha, if you look on immigrants to Canada you will see a long threadabout the Southon brothers and possible links for finding information. Poppyann
