Hi. I am looking for the Collier family in 1861/71
William Collier was a mariner and his wife Mary Ann. [I dont know birth years or place] I know of 1 son born 1854 South Shields > Benjamin George.
I would be grateful for any help. ;D

Hello - I think this is the family in 1861
RG9 P. 3786 Fol. 11 Pg. 12
Lower Thomas Street, Westoe, Durham
COLLIER
William John Collier Head Wid 43 Seaman
William Lawson Collier Son 15 Seaman
John Lawson Collier Son 13
Thomas Lawson Collier Son 10
Benjamin George Collier Son 6
Joesph Septimus Collier Son 4
All born South Shields

In 1871 15 year old Joseph is a boarder
RG 10 5015 34 68

Yes - the only one I could find in 187i was Joseph - at boarding school - Sunderland Industrial School.
There is a family with a widowed mother Mary, and two sons John and Thomas of similar age to those in 1861, but the Benjamin there is aged 8 - I don't think this is any of them. None are seamen.

We're following the same trail here! I saw them too but ruled them out!

Thank you all. You are all typing faster than me ;D
Does the census say where william John was born?
Cheers ;D
-
Well - Tati - what do you think?
The three boys in 1851 - plus her being a mariners wife - suggest this might be correct.
On the other hand - William was a widower in 1861 and Mary is in 1871 - unless of course the 1871 Mary was William's 2nd wife ?
Plus - Benjamin in this family in 1871 is far too young!

South Shields, in 1861.

I think we can rule the 1871 family out ... I believe they're the ones whose name looks like Collive in 1861 :)
-
I think the 1861 family is correct as is Mary in 1851 with William away at sea. I found Joseph married on the 1881 census. Benjamin is also on 1881 before coming to Australia.
:D

I think this Thomas Collier, bottle maker, is an uncle of Benjamin George Collier.
I've only seen transcripts (somewhere) of Thomas Collier's marriage to Mary North and William John (Sansom) Collier to Mary Ann Coulson. Both records state that their father was called John.
Thomas and William both gave various children the middle name Sansom/Sanson.
I believe there is a link somehow back to Collier/Sansom families in Devon/Dorset

thank you :)

I wonder if one of these two might be your ancestor? Thought I would just send this just in case it might have some relevance if you do not have already. Info found via this site:
https://www.southtyneside.gov.uk/article/34814/Search-historical-births-deaths-and-marriages-records
THomas Collier married Mary North on 23 December 1837 at St Hilda.
William Collier married Mary A Coulson on 16 January 1843 at St Hilda.
(Have amended first name to Thomas.)

Thank you. Mary A Coulston looks familiar. I will check into it thanks

This one is included on FamilySearch. :)
Not full details but his Father is recorded as John Collier and her Father as Thomas Coulson.
The couple were both single.

On the GRO index the maiden name of Benjamin George Collier's mother is recorded as Coulson.
