Title: Marriages of Joseph Taylor
Post by: meggiemoo3 on Thursday 13 March 08 15:59 GMT (UK)
Hi

Can anyone help? My great grandfather, Joseph Taylor, born Holbeach, 1847ish married 3 times - the third time to my great grandmother, Ann Eliza Harrison.

What I'm trying to find out is when he married each of his previous wives. His first wife was called Mary Ann (1845ish) and he married her in either 1868 or 1870. Mary died, in childbirth in 1877.

His second marriage was to Ellen, who was born in Whaplode Drove about 1857. He either married her in 1876 or 1879. I suspect that the 1879 is the correct one.

I have found marriage entries for these dates but am not sure which are the correct ones - of course both of them may be correct. Not knowing the maiden names for Mary or Ellen I can't search for a corresponding entry for them.

Does anyone have access to any parish records or IGI info that would clarify which marriage is my Joseph.

There were 2 Joseph's born in this period in Holbeach. My Joseph was born to Tuckney Taylor and Rebecca Watson.

Thank you in advance.

Melanie

The marriage of Joseph in 1879 gives a brides name on the same page as Ellen Carr. There is a birth in 1857 for an Ellen Carr in Spalding reg district.

of interest is the marriage in 1868 in Holbeach as that was to a Mary Ann CARR .

So let me get this right....

Tuckney married Mary Ann Carr after the death of Rebecca who died pre 1861.

His son Joseph married his step sister Mary Ann in 1868 who died in childbirth in 1877. He then marries Mary's sister and his step-sister, Ellen Carr in 1879.

Blimey - he was supposed to be a travelling reverend for the Baptist church so my dad was led to believe.

Of course then he married my great grandmother Ann  Eliza Harrison in 1899, so I guess Ellen must have died sometime before then.

Thanks everyone for all that information.

What was it illegal - to marry a step-sister or your wife's sister?

Surely it wouldn't have mattered if Mary Ann was dead?

You were not allowed to marry dead wifes sister.
It was illegal from Sept 1835... parliment passed the Deceased wifes Sister marriage Act in 1907 . In 1921 an act was passed to allow a widow to marry her deceased husbands brother.

So  my great x 3 grandparents broke the law to marry ,one in a small village and nothing was done at the time.
