Title: Family
Post by: waterloo on Thursday 03 April 08 19:46 BST (UK)
Can anyone help me get information about my Grandfather he was
Thomas William Brown Born 25 August 1877 at 10 Sykes Street Hull He married Mary Ann Glew on 26 Dec 1901 I believe he was killed in the 1st world war but cannot get a death certificate or anyhing
My father Thomas George Brown was born 21 Oct 1902 don't have any information about his family other than that his mother married again don't know if there were anymore children so as you can see I don't have much to go on I am not expecting much but any thing will good as I have a 8yr old Grandson who wants to do a family tree
Thank you

Birth Registration:

Sculcoates Dec Quarter 1877 vol 92/page 171
Brown, Thomas William

This could be your grandfather and will have parents' names on it. Your father's birth registration is also in Sculcoates.

Cheers,

Jen

Here is a possible candidate for Thomas in 1891.

Alice Brown, wife, 30, Born London
Alice M Brown, dau, single, 15, born Hull
Thomas Wm Brown, son, 13
James Ed   Brown, 12                  "        "
Charlotte Brown, dau, 10
Alice Brown, dau, 9

All children born Hull.

1881

Bankside, Sculcoates

Thomas Brown, 33, Varnish Maker, born Hull
Annie Brown, 29, wife, born Northallerton, Yorks
Annie M Brown, 5,
Thos Wm. , 3
Jas Ed, 2
Charlotte, 4 months

Looks  this wife, Annie, died and Thomas remarried between 1881 and 1891. I will double check the eldest daughter's name in '91 but am fairly sure it is down as Alice.

Hi Waterloo and Jen,

I hope you both don't mind me interupting .. and I wouldn't normally do this. It's just with Brown being such a fairly common surname, there are several possible candidates with similar names on the census returns.

I thought it may help for me to add that I also looked for Thomas William and Jen has found exactly the same information that I would have posted .. the birth registration in Sculcoates is the only one for this time.

Kindest regards,

Pels

This is bothering me for some reason Waterloo ..  :-\

Thomas George Brown, born 21st October 1902.

Thomas George was the son of:

Thomas William Brown, born 25th August 1877.married 26th December 1901 to Mary Ann Glew. Killed 1914/1918 War.

I have found my great grandfather who was thomas brown born 1848 his mother was Annie fields Birth place listed as Northallerton I am still trying to find my grandfathers army record I have been told he died in the war and i think it was round about 1917

sorry jen think you got the wrong brown thomas william definitely died first and Ann remarried

I can't work out how you seem so certain that Jen was wrong .. her information was based on the parents of Thomas William .. and seems to be fairly similar to yours?

Thomas Brown aged 33 in 1881 would have been born in 1848 and wife Annie was born in Northallerton .. so it appears Jen was correct ..  :)

Wasn't she .. or is it just me ?  :-\

According to the 1891 census, the parents of Mary Ann Glew are Thomas and Alice.

Thomas Glew birth registered in Sculcoates:

Sculcoates, Vol 22, page 492

If you would like any further details with regard to Thomas and Alice, please don't hesitate to ask.

Hi,

As always happens when I switch off, all sorts of new postings appear!

Can I come back in on the Thomas Brown front? I did check all other possibilities and this seemed to be by far the most likely candidate. Ages, names and places of birth appear to be right.

Sorry if I have confused the issue,

Cheers,

Jen

If you read my earlier posts Jen I think you were correct .. that was I pursued the line of Annie.

If we are wrong .. it can't do any harm to show Waterloo the various options, that we ourselves can see.  :)

Hello again Waterloo,

I have just passed your reply onto someone who I'm hoping can give you better advice than me ..  :-\

Good luck with this one, I'm sure a certain young eight year appreciates his grandma very much for all the help you're giving him!

Very kindest regards,

Pels  :)

I think this soldier - is the one you have Waterloo .... this is the ONLY TW Brown they have on CWGC !! ..... if you're trying to find his records ..... it's possible they are not there - most of the WW1 records were destroyed in WW2 blitz .... but you might try just his name when you search ... sometimes too much information brings a negative result !

In Memory of
Private T W BROWN
11522 6th Bn East Yorkshire Regiment
who died
on 28 January 1917

Remembered with honour
Baghdad (North Gate) War Cemetery

He's also mentioned on the Iraq Roll of Honour

And heres his medal card at the National Archives ... it can be downloaded for 3 pounds 50 ... I didn't see it on A*
