Title: Where were they born?
Post by: Gert on Sunday 13 April 08 12:50 BST (UK)

I`m trying to work out when my Fletchers came back to England.

On the 1900 census for Philadelphia, Pennsylvania i have,

Andrew Fletcher born 1870 Derby
Matilda Fletcher born 1871 Derby
Dorothy Fletcher born 1894 Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

The next child i have a date of birth for this couple is,

Martha Evelyn Fletcher born Dec 1904 Derby

But (and theres always a but) theres 3 more children,

Francis
Paticia
Matilda

So where and when were they born, 10 years between the dates that i have for the 2 children seems a long time and have not been able to find the births in Derby.

Could some kind soul please look between 1900 and 1904 and see if they possibly crop up in the births for Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

I have contact with the decendants of both Dorothy and Martha and neither of them have any idea either.

Thank you for any help

Sylvia

Philadelphia birth records aren't available online as far as I know.

How do you know that these 3 children existed? If they were born in Philadelphia could they have died before the family returned to England?

1900 census says Matilda had 1 child and 1 child living which has to be Dorothy (born in Penna.) and that the Fletchers came to US 1893.

Does sound like they existed then. Did they die in England? Death index should give age at death- think more recent indexes give birthdate?
Do you know mother Matilda's maiden name?

Mothers name was Matilda Millicent Tantum and i`m guessing the girls could have married , so wouldn`t find deaths under Fletcher.

Hi Sylvia,

They are tricky little ancestors aren't they ;D
Just don't seem to want to be found.

Thought I'd found something then realised there is another
couple Andrew and Matilda born in Derby in Penns....just to confuse us  ::)

If you don't have details of when Andrew and Matilda arrived in US
I could post them if you like.

Raylen

Thank you Raylen, yes i have those Andrew arrived in 1893 and Matilda followed in 1894.

If i read it right they are living in North 5th Ave in 1900.

Have just had an email saying Matilda (the daughter) could have been born March 1901 Pennsylvania, as Matilda Camilla Fletcher.

Dear Gert:

I've just started genealogical research on Albert Edward Fletcher and ran into a roadblock researching this couple.  I found this thread and joined the RootsChat to explore this thread.

My angle is this: Albert Edward Fletcher of Barrow-in-Furness is my great grandfather, of whom my father (also Albert Edward Fletcher) had minimal information, only knowing that he was from England.  Just last week I found AEF's 1902 passenger listing, stating he is going to his brother Alexander's house in McKeesport, Pennsylvania at 2011 Sylvan Ave.  He sailed from Liverpool on March 19 1902 (anniversary being two days from today!).  AEF's parents were Alexander and Hannah (Lancaster) Fletcher. To keep this message short (plus I left my notes at home) I think this Andrew Fletcher and AEF are connected in some way.

Have you learned much more since this thread was active?

Hoping there is a connection, because sorting out Andrew and Matilda has been complicated to say the least!  Same goes for Hannah.

Cheers,
Stephen

Looking at original post, it is unlikely that Andrew bn 1870 and Martha bn 1904 have the same parents, at least not the same mother. 34 years is pushing it a bit even if she was young when Andrew was born.

Hello Stephen,

Yes I did find more out about this family, Andrew and Matilda had 2 children in Philadelphia USA, Dorothy 1894 and Matilda 1901, they returned to Derby England in 1903, both Martha 1904 and Francis 1908 were born in Derby. The family then stayed in Derby where they died.

Andrew was my grandmothers brother and I have not found any connection to  Lancashire.

Gert

Thanks, Gert.  The Andrew Fletcher (and family) that I am pursuing is the one offered up by lissa from the 1900 US Census.  At 24 Mathias Street, he would have lived just a few blocks away from Alexander Fletcher on Sylvan Avenue.  My line runs:

me
AEF (b. 1938)
Leonard Fletcher / Anna Critchlow
AEF (b. 1883, Barrow-in-Furness)
Alexander Fletcher (b.1839 Whitehaven) / Hannah Lancaster (b.abt 1840, Distington)
John Fletcher (no data yet) / Mary Lancaster (b. 1813 Winscales)

I'm only a couple days into this, so I'm sure there's lots more to sift through.  I'm sending a email to my parents and siblings on March 19th to let them all know about AEF's 19 March 1902 voyage.  So far, I'm the only one in my immediate family that knows where he came from and when he arrived.
