I would appreciate the Ridley info, please.
Thanks.
-
Hello Rupiezucki. Is this Ridley request related to your other posting about Ridley?
If it is I do not think it will help because the six Ridley gravestone inscriptions that I have are are dating from 1729 and are well established families unlike the ones that you are looking for. I am not smirking because I know how difficult it is sorting out difficult families. I gave up family research a long time ago because of the same problems that you are having with your search.
Adam.
-
Hi Adam,
Not well established? Hmph! :D
Yes, they are related - My earliest Ridley, so far is William born 1801 Winston - but he is only the earliest for now!
I am finding that there is a plethora of Ridleys, and, having hit a brick wall for now, was hoping to try coming at it from the other end - read earlier, in the hope that I can make some connections.
Any help greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Holly

Adam,
Great thanks very much for respondong so quickly. The Postles definitely look as though they are part of the same family, although I think they are not the direct link to my family - I think they are siblings (unless Jonathan had even more wives than I originally thought!!)- I need to work it out. As for the Richardson ones I'm not too sure, there are so many of them I'll need to do some trawling through my files.
Again, thank you so much for looking the entries up for me and responding so quickly - you're a star! ;)

Like most of us this is a bit of a long shot but :)
I have 3 Richard Thompson's in my tree 2 of which have Turnell ,Turnill, possibly Turnbull?( as middle name)
seeing this name on your list I thought it can't hurt to try
Death ranges would be 1795- unknown.

Hi Adam,

I have the burial details so it's great to confirm the family connections. One that I didn't know about was Elis (Elisabeth?) possible wife of James, so I'm grateful for that as well.

Hello Colin. I do not usually put into the replies anything but the essential information, but I thought I had to come back to this one.
This is a eulogy to their father Robert Croudace of Langley.(posted yesterday)
His mind soared above the common level of mankind, his understanding was inferior to none, and the pains he took to cultivate it enabled him to know the real value of education, and it was his study to communicate it to others:
His sons now feel the comfortable effects of his paternal care which more than compensate the want of riches, and place them above the wrecks of fortitude.
They have erected this stone as a tribute of respect, for his memory, and their sense of his virtues as a father.

Thanks again,

Ryan
-
Hi Adam,
I know you are very busy, but would it be possibly for you to tell me about the Reed MI's in Lanchester, I have only just discovered a possible place of burial for a relative called Mary Reed. Or has only asked for any Reeds already?
Thank you very much,
Best Wishes,
Ryan
-
Hello Ryan. Here we go again. You have not read the previous posts for Lanchester before posting your request for Reed.
I have posted on the Reed surname before.
As for what area I cover and what places I have posted inscriptions for.
Just look for Subject started by Adamand.
I see no point in repeating the 23 places that I have posted.
Adam

Any Waltons?
-
Hello Allisonbcd. Look at the first posting to see if there are any Waltons.
Adam
-
Hello Adam,
I am sorry, I just don't think. Have not been on rootschat long and have to get used to it better. I will check the board for any other surnames, so I won't boter you again with more requests.
Sorry. :(

Could you please look for the inscription(s) for the Thornton family?
Thank you.
-
Hello Morris. There is only one for Thornton. Here it is:-
In loving memory of Sarah Clarke Thornton, who died January/3/1935 aged 85 years.
Also Luke Thornton, husband of the above who died May/1/1935 aged 91 years.
Adam
-
Thank you for that information. (this is my husband's family and I was wondering how many family members might be recorded on the headstone)
The family lived in Lanchester for quite a few years. (I know that some of the houses and buildings in Lanchester were built by Luke Thornton (not the same Luke Thornton as the headstone).

Hello Adam,
Do you happen to have any details for TURBETT. This is for a friend who has burials for John 1787 and Ann 1803 but there is a discrepancy in the PR's and the BT's where Ann was described as wife of John and widow of John.
I would appreciate any help.
Regards,
Colin
-
Hello Colin. There is one gravestone inscription for Turbett. I do not think it has the information that you are looking for but it may have some useful information:-

Adam
-
Hello Adam,
Thank you very much for those details. I am sure my friend will be delighted with the potted family history, and it seems obvious that they must be related. It might also help to determine if John was Ann's husband, as there was no age given on his burial.
I appreciate all your efforts,
Regards,
Colin

Hello Paul. I have posted about 23 graveyard/cemeteries lists but they are mostly in Weardale with the odd ones in Teesdale and Northumberland.
Sorry none in the consett area.
It may help if you put the dates that you are interested in and if they are catholic as the name may suggest, you may get more help than I can give.
Adam

Merry Christmas Adam-and thanks for all the help and guidance
-
Hello Paul.
I have checked around and there is a John Kelly gravestone at Black Hill near Consett. He is with his wife Margaret.

-
Hello Adam
I don't suppose the Carr MI you list could in fact be John Curr (d 1777) or his wife? He was a coal viewer, of Bushblades, so should have been able to afford a stone.
Thanks,
Geoffrey :)
-
Hi, would it be possible to have any All Saints inscriptions for the name DARNELL?
With many thanks.
-
Hello Geoffrey. No it was for a Robert Carr and his son Robert it was also the 1850's.
Adam
-
Thanks all the same. Perhaps there was a problem with the family been RC, but the burial is on NBI as in Lanchester churchyard.
Geoffrey.
-
Hello Geoffrey. I do not think there would be problems with the actual burial and they will have to have been buried in the church of England graveyard.
Come to think of it, I can only think of two graveyard attached to to Catholic churches.
One is Wolsingham and the other is Crook. I am sure some one will point out some others.
The earliest burials in those two churches will be 1848 and that is way past the date that you mention.
What you have to bear in mind is that there may never have been a stone or it has not survived the ravages of time. And of course there may be one and it has been pushed over on the" health and safety grounds"
Those stones will never be lifted because the are so heavy and of course the will never be read again.

Hello Geneone. Here are the inscriptions from two gravestones for Darnell.

In memory of William Darnell of Cornsay, who died at Westshield July/24/1779 in the 86 th of his age.

Thanks again, Adam.
It's a pity if some stones have been rendered unreadable: I thought I could perhaps discover why various people on the internet seem convinced John was born in 1712. My direct ancestor, his son George, was just a fairly successful businessman in Sheffield, but his brother John was a very innovative engineer, as well as a colliery manager, & his sons were another engineer, an Australian statesman, & a rather heroic RC priest. An interesting family.
Regards,
Geoffrey :)
-
Thanks so much Adam. Those Darnells are mine and gave me a new piece of info - after I worked out the Roman numerals :) Pam

Hi Adam
I don't think anyone has already asked for Greenwell inscriptions - apologies if they have :D
Linda
-
Hello Linda. There are nine Greenwell gravestones from the late 1700's with inscriptions for the ranks of Colonels, Majors, Judges, Vicars etc.
Do you think they are yours?
Saves me typing out that lot if they do not belong to you.
Adam
-
Hi Adam
Thanks for looking. They sound much too posh for my lot :D
You're doing a great job and I'm sure lots of people appreciate it
Linda

Hi Adam
Thank you so much for the info. This is very exciting!
I'll need to look further but it seems another piece of the jigsaw falls into place.
Vernon Mace had a daughter Vera b.Lanchester 1913.
Vernon and Henry worked at Malton Colliery but I'm not sure where they lived - will need to check the census.
Thanks again
-
Hello again. I have modified the inscription with the full details.
Adam

Hi Adam
Thanks for the info on WILSONs.
Unfortunately, none are mine but I appreciate your time.
Annie
-
Hi Adam,
I wonder if I could trouble you for the Thornton entries.
Thank you in advance and for all the help you offering us all.
Kate.
-
Hello Kate. I have already posted the only gravestone inscription for Thornton.
You can see it on post number 160.
Adam
-
Dear Adam
I would be very grateful if you could let me know what inscriptions you have for Armstrong.
I see you also have several Walton inscriptions. I've hit a brick wall with my Jane Walton (nee Armstrong), her husband Michael Walton, and their son John Thomas Walton who all lived in Leadgate, Lanchester, and who variously disappeared from the records between 1856 and 1881. I wonder if any of these names are mentioned in the Walton inscriptions you have.
If you have already posted entries for Armstrongs and Waltons, please forgive me for not spotting them.
Thank you very much indeed
Moni
-
Hello Moni. Here is the only gravestone for Armstrong at Lanchester :-
To the memory of John Armstrong of Iveston, who died December/23/1862 aged 69 years.
Also Elizabeth, their daughter, who died June/5/1856 aged 19 years.
Also Sarah Simpson, their daughter, who died February/1853 aged 24 years.
Also Margaret, their daughter, who died October/??/???? aged 27 years.
There are 13 Walton gravestones at Lanchester but I do not think any of them are linked to your family names.
The only Michael Walton that I have is for a stone at Stanhope but that is dated 1700's.
If you can give me more details of the Walton's I will look through all 75 inscriptions of Waltons that I have.
Adam
-
Dear Adam
Thanks very much for the information. Sadly none of the Armstrongs are mine. I assumed that they would be buried in Lanchester because they lived in Leadgate, but perhaps they were buried with no headstones.
Thank you loads for offering to check for my Waltons. I really appreciate it, but it's quite a long shot and I don't want to waste your time. The information that you have supplied already has been very helpful because it has eliminated some possibilities.
However I’ve tried to summarise the info about them just in case you should come across them in your travels!
Jane Armstrong (b 1836 Hexham) married Michael Walton (a miner, b c1831, possibly in Cumberland) in 1856 in Lanchester. Jane gave birth to John Thomas Walton in Gateshead in 1857.
By 1861 Jane was back with her parents in Leadgate together with her son John Thomas Walton, but Michael Walton seems to have disappeared from the records (i.e. I can't find a likely census entry for him).
By 1871, Jane Walton also disappeared from the census records but her son John Thomas Walton was still living with his grandparents in Leadgate.
By 1881, John Thomas Walton too disappeared from the census records.
I have checked Free BMD for possible deaths, although I know that not all were registered.
There are lots of deaths for Jane Waltons on Free BMD between 1861 and 1871. Between 1861 and 1865 I wouldn’t know where to start because no ages are given. From 1866 to 1871, the only possible one in terms of age is a 33 year old in the Auckland district in the June qtr 1866.
The only possible death I found for Michael Walton between 1856 and 1881 was for a 47 year old in the March qtr 1877 in the Auckland district, but he may be a different person to mine.
The only two possible deaths I found for John Thomas Walton are both simply for John Walton, one aged 16 in Weardale in the March qtr 1874 and one aged 20 in Weardale in the September qtr 1879.
Of course it’s also possible that Michael, Jane and John Thomas Walton all emigrated in staggered fashion over a period of 20 or so years!
I hope that eventually I will find out what happened to them.
With loads of thanks again and very good wishes
Moni

Hi Adam
Thanks very much for the inscriptions unfortunately they don't seem to be my Dents. You do a great job with all these MIs, its much appreciated.
Anny
-
Hello Anny. What christian names and dates for Dent are you looking for?
It may be easier if I had a look at some of my surname records that I have not yet posted.
Adam
-
Dear Adam
Could you please supply a list for Batey MI's for Lanchester. Thanks
Aussiemandas
-
Hello Ausiemandas. I have already posted the Batey inscription on this thread.
Read all the replies and you may also find other names that may be of interest.
Adam
-
Thanks Adam
I'm specifically looking for a Thomas Dent, a tanner, who I haven't been able to find since the birth of his youngest son Henry in 1833. Thomas doesn't show up on the 1841 census (however his wife Ann nee Hutchinson is shown as Head of the household as opposed to Widow living in Bolam with the children). His widow remarries in 1847 so Thomas has definitely died by then. They may not have been able to afford a MI so it is a shot in the dark. So far I've acquired about 10 death certs trying to track him down but the ages have been too far out, I would guess he would be about 40/45ish.
All a bit vague I'm afraid.
Anny
-
Hello Anny. I have been through all the records that I have and there are Thomas Dents of around the period that you mention. Sorry:(
Adam
-
Thanks anyway Adam, at least I won't keep asking you for MIs everytime you put up a new post. I think he must have moved out of the county, I've even checked to see if he was transported over here.
Much appreciated
Anny
-
Hi Adam,
Would you be able to provide the Cumming inscriptions? Many thanks
Katherine
-
Hello Katherine. One old and one new :-
In loving memory of Godfrey Cumming, died 31/October/1949.
Also his wife Violet May, died 15/June/1957.
No aged were given on this stone.

Joseph, May/21 aged 10 years.
Elizabeth May/25 aged 5 years.
Margaret May/27 aged 12 Years
Catherine June/4 aged 14 years.
The ??????? is because I could not make sense of the letters that made up the christian name.
Cornsey is now known as Cornsay.
Adam

Hi Adam
Could you lookup the Musgrave surnames please?
Thanks
Ben
-
Hello Ben. Sorry the Surname on the stone was Musgrove and not Musgrave.
Adam
-
Thanks Adam - Godfey and Violet are my maternal grandparents. Not so sure about the earlier family yet - very much looks like an infectious disease of some sort took all the children so close together.
Kind Regards
Katherine
-
Hi Adam

-
Hello Bne. Here is the inscription :-

Hi Adam,
I have enjoyed reading the earlier postings - I have read through them all and got some information for the STOREY and PALLISTER relatives.

Hi Adam,
Thanks for that information - I will add that to the file. I wonder if you go out and take a look at the gravestones each time you get a request or whether you have a list all typed up in advance? Either way, it must have taken you a great deal of time and energy.
If you ever come across a Phoebe Hovells (could be written as Hovels or Hovvels) or a Thomas Allison (his wife was called Ann) on your travels, would you please let me know, as I have been searching for these two relatives for some time now?
Thanks again for your help - it is appreciated.

Thanks for your great work!
-
Hello. There is only one for Millburn at Lanchester. Here it is :-

Doesn't appear immediately to link to my family, but to be fair I've just discovered the Milburn link so still early days
All the best
-
Adam,
Hope you're still involved in this thread! Would it be possible for you to tell me the Hardcastle inscription - I'm hoping it's my great grandad Malander...
Regards
David :)
-
Hello David:- Only the one for Hardcastle and it is not in very good condition for reading.
Here is what can be made out:-
Sacred to the memory of George Hardcastle, who departed this life 5/May/1858? aged 53 years.
And Jane his wife who died 20/January/1844 aged 35? years.
Also Jefferey? son, who died 5/September 1835? aged 22 years.
Sorry about all the ?? marks the trouble is the stone is affected by lichen and was chased very fine making the 3's and 5's difficult to tell apart.
By the way this was the only gravestone with a Hardcastle amongst all the graveyard that I have done
Adam
-
Adam,
Thanks for that. Unfortunately the Malander I'm looking for died in 1935 - I'm pretty sure he was living in Lanchester when he died - do you know if that's the only graveyard there?
Cheers
David
-
Hi Adam
Although I dont live far away from Stanley I have spent hours trawling these graveyards and only hit a brick wall.
Do you have anything for the surnames Blake, French or Minto please.
Thanks in advance
-
Hello Mandy. If you go to the first posting of each thread you will see a list of names the are on gravestones in that particular graveyard.
I do no know if you are looking for information at Lanchester (the thread that you posted on) or Stanley.
I do not do cross posting and that makes it easier for you to do searches and read the posts for that particular thread.
Let me know what information that you have (gravestones that you have found) and dates that you are looking for. I will then do a look up for you.
I have a feeling that the names that you are looking for are Catholic? Am I correct?
Adam
-
Hi
Apologies, I read the thread new to old and I should have read the orignal look up first.
Thanks anyway
Amanda
-

Hi Adam
Thank you for that. Although I have relatives buried at Lanchester, they must not be at that church or they have unmarked graves. I don't know of any connection with the people you have mentioned.
Regards,
Allen.

Me again. :)

My cousin would still be interested in the Johnson findings as they may be siblings.
Thanks as always.
-
Hello Allen. The six gravestone inscriptions that I have are all for one family and all have BURGOYNE as a middle name. Ask your relation if that name means anything.
Adam

Thanks Adam, but unfortunately that does not fit in. I don't suppose you have the M.I.'s for Langley Park?
Regards,
Allen.

Could you please post the inscriptions for the surname Hall?

Sorry I did not realise that there would be so many!
I think my Halls will have lived in Iveston. I am particularly interested in Jonathan Hall b 1749. His daughter Eleanor b 1777 is also my direct ancestor. Eleanor had brothers in Thomas, Joseph, Silas and William the last named being born I think in 1794. So from that date until about 1850 would be great.
Many thanks
William
